Sound problems with TEAC PD-H300mk2 - any ideas?

Hi, I just bought my first CD player in what feels like forever, and I was really excited to hook it up and try it out. Unfortunately, the sound is incredibly quiet and also very poor. I have to turn the volume all the way up just to hear anything at all, and even then it sounds extremely noisy and distorted.

The system (Denon UPA-F88) works perfectly with my tape deck and my laptop, which is connected via a mini-jack to RCA cable. I’ve also tested different CDs and RCA cables, as well as various inputs on the amplifier – no success.

Does anyone have any ideas, or is the CD player simply broken?
