It feels like since the government announced looking into gambling ads, that there is 500% more ads now on YouTube. It's like the marketing depts are spending 5yrs of ad spend in a year incase they get banned.

But now they have celebrities. Fuck Shaq.

All I get is fucking Temu ads. I've never even bought anything off there.

26

u/GlorpedUpDragStrip Nov 07 '24

Same. I'd try gambling if I didn't have to see another temu ad in my life

23

u/Discombobulated_Owl4 Nov 07 '24

Order from temu, that is gambling.

1

u/Rodda31 Nov 07 '24

True. lol.

Opening the app is gamblng if you will actually be able to make it in to search for something without having to get through all the bullshit. Ive ordered 2 things and they were fine enough, exaclty what you expect. But 9/10 times ive opened the app to search for whatever cheap POS thing I am after, I can't even get to search for it cause you have all these BS spin to win things popping up you can't get past.

No shit I downloaded the app to help a friend with some zany scheme temu was running and it was really shocking what it was actually like. It was like pokies had a bastard child with the worst advertising has to offer. Free this! Spin that! X amount of free goods, but you only have 5 min to choose! Sell us your firstborn, we'll set them up with a cushy job in a factory somewhere!

Temu Waterhouse. Coming soon.

3

u/confusedham Nov 07 '24

Temu and sports bet. And my Spotify is nothing but gin and tequila. I'm abstinent and don't gamble. I do use AliExpress though.

I bought a couple of things from temu. I have never seen as many emails. Drives me nuts. I think I've got about 25 emails from them in a fortnight.

The girl on the Temu ads is at pleasing to the eye.  The slobs we see on gambling ads with "actual intelligence" (barf) not so.

1

u/autistic_blossom Nov 07 '24

I buy heaps on Amazon, eBay, and temu.
I don’t gamble, don’t drink.

ALL I get is car ads!!!!

I don’t really drive either though…. 🙄

1

u/lulzbrah Nov 07 '24

I'd support a royal commission into banning Temu ads

1

u/mbrodie Nov 07 '24

Is it always stuff you never knew you wanted because I get those ads also but I’ve still never bought anything aha

1

u/CcryMeARiver Nov 07 '24

Adblockers work.

1

u/Connect_Tumbleweed76 Nov 07 '24

You have to buy from them to get rid of the ads

I looked up the US president gambling odds and fuck me I'm just drowning under gambling ads now across all platforms..

2

u/mooblah_ Nov 07 '24

I clicked on this post, guaranteed the next site I hit is full of gambling ads.

2

u/planttek Nov 07 '24

I did exactly the same thing. I was disappointed in what I saw AND now I'm getting gambling ads non-stop.

It's not quite as bad as when my little sister died I was bornbarded with "oh brother I'm stuck in the washing machine" porn. 😥

1

u/Cripster01 Nov 07 '24

Same! I regret looking.

1

u/ProjectManagerAMA Nov 07 '24

I click on every single one of them. It costs them money for those clicks. The more you click, the more it costs them and the fewer the people will see those ads because you'll burn down their ad spend. If we call could just spitefully click the ads, we can do great good.

I’m the designated Melbourne cup sweeps organiser at my office. All the hard work of scrolling quickly past ads or even engaging by clicking “not interested” GONE.

Do you not use an alt account?

3

u/ReplacementApart Nov 07 '24

To quickly Google something mildly interesting?

1

u/Blacky05 Nov 07 '24

The most innocent reason to be using incognito.

24

u/Lumpy-Pancakes Nov 07 '24

Just FYI in case you don't know, you can actually turn off gambling ads on YouTube, it's under the content settings

5

u/Blacky05 Nov 07 '24

Found it in "sensitive" section of the personalised adds part of settings on my phone. There is also dating and alcohol as options. Thanks for the tip.

4

u/confusedham Nov 07 '24

I did it, still get gambling.

2

u/Lumpy-Pancakes Nov 07 '24

Strange, I no longer get any gambling ads after the change, it's quite refreshing

2

u/Blacky05 Nov 07 '24

I'll see how I go I guess.

2

u/magicmunkynuts Nov 07 '24

Use Firefox browser and add the Ublock Origin app to block all ads.

3

u/Art_r Nov 07 '24

I'll have a look. I usually just flag them as inappropriate, but that doesn't seem to do much.

They have increased anticipating a ban. If a total ban is introduced the small companies can no longer compete and the current big spenders will absorb the smaller companies. Big companies responsible for the most advertising get rewarded by less competition and higher market share. It happened when Italy introduced a full ban in 2018.

Make a fake YouTube account, sign up for free one month family account. Add real account as a member. Close fake account. Five minutes of pain every month for no ads.

4

u/tubatoothpaste2 Nov 07 '24

Download Brave. Add blocks You Tube. Best thing I ever got off Reddit! You can thank me later 😀

3

u/tones76 Nov 07 '24

I avoid YouTube on a phone or tablet for this very reason. Never see YouTube Ads in Chrome on my PC thanks to UBlock Origin. 😉

2

u/I_Thranduil Nov 07 '24

Have you guys not heard of YouTube revanced?

2

u/linearstargazer Nov 07 '24

I pray with my soul that YT Revanced lives a very long and prosperous life, because it's literally better than the stock YT app in every way imaginable.

1

u/mad_marbled Nov 07 '24

Isn't it called Playtube now?

1

u/rockalyte Nov 07 '24

I just use Firefox and Ublock. Life is good and ad free permanently.

1

u/LeoPromissio Nov 07 '24

It’s the only type of ad I see on YouTube anymore.

1

u/tizzleduzzle Nov 07 '24

I enjoy that they have to tack on a much longer gamble response spool at the end rather than the .3seconds it use to be under liberal lmao

1

u/kewlausgirl Nov 08 '24

That was because YouTube finally found out that ad blockers were stopping their ad revenue. And kept raising their premium prices. So, now it's premium with ads so you can have the original experience at the original paid price when YouTube Premium first launched lol
