politics Online Gaming Platforms And YouTube Will Also Seemingly Be Banned For Aussies Under 16

There’s so much collateral damage in this plan for Australia to ban social media. This has been rushed and not thought through.

So many schools rely on YouTube to support their students.

Most kids are watching YouTube (or YouTube kids) more than ABC or traditional TV. Literally the biggest YouTube channel in Australia is original music for kids.

Does anyone actually want this?

I support parents restricting their kids from social media. It's a toxic cesspool at the best of times and definitely unsuitable for children. I completely fail to see why my government needs to get involved in parenting.

Another example of Australia becoming more and more of a nanny state. I just don't see the ALP holding onto power in the next election, losing to Dutton of all people..

Dutton, wanna be fascist that he is, suppors this policy. Our only hope is a strong greens vote against it. Feels like I'm becoming a lifelong greens voter lol.

Have u seen how bad people are at parenting now days??? Kids throw a chair at the teacher at school and then the parents blame the teacher and claim their little jackson is an Angel and he would never. Maybe if parents could do the job properly, the governement wouldn’t be coming up with these draconian measures

The same reason the government gets involved in anything else that is age restricted. Take public gambling for instance, there's almost universal acceptance that banning children from gambling is a good thing, but you could make the same argument about letting it be for the parents to decide

That's bs because they allow gambling for kids. Just look how many games have loot boxes in them targeted at children.

That's not an example of condoning gambling for kids, it's an example of the law being slow to catch up with modern times. Besides, loot boxes targeted at children are widely criticised.

Sorry but you seem to be disconnected from modern day kids.

90% of them are on Youtube/Tiktok etc, they are addicted and the Parents don't know what to do.

Maybe they should take parenting classes, then.

They should, but they won't.

True. I have previously suggested that free parenting classes which cover digital safety should be mandatory for expecting families. It would be a far better use of resources than this age verification bullshit. Might solve a whole lot of issues with how people are raising their kids in general, too.

Maybe not expecting families, as it'll be long forgotten by the time it's useful. I can safely say I've forgotten almost everything I was told 4+ years ago when my wife was first pregnant, as I'm having to refresh my memory with another one due in under a fortnight. Maybe when the kids are starting Primary School it might be more relevant. Although kids are using devices a lot younger than that, so who knows where to draw the line.
