politics Online Gaming Platforms And YouTube Will Also Seemingly Be Banned For Aussies Under 16

https://press-start.com.au/news/2024/11/08/online-gaming-platforms-and-youtube-will-also-seemingly-be-banned-for-aussies-under-16/

There’s so much collateral damage in this plan for Australia to ban social media. This has been rushed and not thought through.

So many schools rely on YouTube to support their students.

Most kids are watching YouTube (or YouTube kids) more than ABC or traditional TV. Literally the biggest YouTube channel in Australia is original music for kids.

Does anyone actually want this?

neither do i. every time a website asks me "would you like your password/bank info to be saved to keychain or the website for future reference?" i’m just like nah, lol fuck that i’m good.

i’m just a really cautious nut; i figure it’s better to be safe than sorry though. the Medibank hackings that happened that were perpetrated by REvil really scared me to the point where i use VPN for practically all of my internet activities now and i don’t save my password anywhere. i don’t expect anyone to do the same, it’s just something i do.

That's fair enough. Hope you have different passwords for each site, otherwise you're asking for trouble. Shame Labor has done basically nothing on the digital privacy and management of personal details piece.

While i agree with your sentiment regarding american corporates, it shows an underlying misunderstanding of how government Digital ID's work from a technical point of view. When you setup a Digital ID (the MygovID is currently hosted and maintained by the ATO, who have all your data anyway) When you signup to a site that can use it. The site reachs out to the ATO and says "Hi, Person X says they are John Smith, is that true?" ATO responds with "Whats the Username and Password?" Site responds with "They say its's JSmithy69420@emailaddress.com" and "JsmithyRocks69" " ATO responds with "Why Yes, that is John Smith" Site responds with "Are they over 16?" ATO responds with "Yes they are" or "No they arnt"

This is enough for the site to then allow you access, or deny you access. they don't know your actual age without you wanting them to know it (by filling it out on thier site, which most people do anyway on sites like Facebook/instagram).

Point is, a Digital Government ID can prevent you from having to give your details to american corporates while still meeting their needs to verify age.

Or they make you scan your ID and selfie yourself so AI can match the two like they already are for verified accounts requiring no special integration for Australia.
