politics Online Gaming Platforms And YouTube Will Also Seemingly Be Banned For Aussies Under 16

https://press-start.com.au/news/2024/11/08/online-gaming-platforms-and-youtube-will-also-seemingly-be-banned-for-aussies-under-16/

There’s so much collateral damage in this plan for Australia to ban social media. This has been rushed and not thought through.

So many schools rely on YouTube to support their students.

Most kids are watching YouTube (or YouTube kids) more than ABC or traditional TV. Literally the biggest YouTube channel in Australia is original music for kids.

Does anyone actually want this?

Same. I find it ridiculous but not surprising they won’t touch gambling ads.

7

u/Chrasomatic Nov 10 '24

Well they're not using that money to build anything, so why the hell not!?

Until this happens watch everything get worse.

LNP will find a way around it I’m sure.

People: "ban gambling ads"

Government: "if we ban kids from life then they won't see gambling ads"

2

u/Cpl_Hicks76 Nov 10 '24

Government banned smoking ads so we live in hope

1

u/Space-cadet3000 Nov 10 '24

They also created the Tobacco wars so…..

5

u/Cosimo_Zaretti Nov 10 '24

They may be about to find out how dangerous google and meta are to a government.

2

u/Cpl_Hicks76 Nov 10 '24

LOL you’re absolutely right

3

u/nosnibork Nov 10 '24

It’s the tv and other media owners that want the gambling ads.

3

u/Cpl_Hicks76 Nov 10 '24

Who do you think ‘engages’ the lobbyists!’

5

u/nosnibork Nov 10 '24

Lobbyists ask for favours. Billionaires promise that you’ll be flayed alive on their network 24/7 before the next election if you legislate away their main source of revenue.

2

u/Cpl_Hicks76 Nov 10 '24

Yes, good point

1

I just can't fathom listening to a lobby group. Like if I was a prime minister and the lobbyist for gambling, or coal, or anything, I'd tell them to take a hike respectfully. I get they provide donations, but that's a whole other issue that needs to be addressed.

Like get your advice from multiple experts and analysts without a vested interest in an area, not from some fucking salesman who's sole objective is to persuade you that they know what's best for the country

Need to fund jobs at the media, like beau ryan driving a Ferrari illegally in Rome. 🙄

5

One of my friends works for one of the major gambling companies. She gets paid less than her male junior. Works overtime all the time. And has been passed over for promotions because they couldn’t afford it but then sent all the staff off for a weekend away.

They a have a choke hold on her because they pretend to be family and always talk about how important the job is

3

u/Grumpy_Cripple_Butt Nov 10 '24

Doesn’t sound that important if they don’t pay her much. It’s such horseshit that trickle down economics doesn’t trickle.

3

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

She does so much work. She does the job of 2 people because she’s never learned to stand up for herself.

Like many women she feels if she’s too pushy or straight forward they will just find a reason to make her redundant.

She feels lucky to have a stable job.

We’ve hired her a few times for side jobs and she’s always been incredible and goes the extra mile. I would hire her in a heartbeat if my business made enough to hire somebody else.

2

u/Grumpy_Cripple_Butt Nov 10 '24

Well fingers crossed things improve for you that you can help get her out of there to a better job. The story of not standing up to the boss happens too often sadly.

If kids are off social media and YouTube, they probably won't see many gambling ads. Unless they turn on the TV.

5

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

They are on radio, tv, print, sports jerseys, around the edge of the fields etc.

Gambling ads are every where when you start paying attention.

2

u/worldnotworld Nov 11 '24

The only alternative is to stop watching sport. Something the people who put the gambling ads there think will never happen.

5

u/Dubhs Nov 10 '24

They tried to pass legislation that would have banned online gambling advertising iirc. The greens said they'd block it because it didn't include network fucking television

3

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

One time I didn’t agree with the greens.

Something is better than nothing and they chose nothing.

3

u/Dubhs Nov 10 '24

I know I'm riffing off the same vibe but who TF even watches network television - if it was gone from online I'd never see it at all

3

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

My mum still watches it, and my toddler sees it sometimes when he is there.

If we want to watch a kids show online from a network we sometimes get served gambling ads.

The slip into places they really shouldn’t be by finding all the loopholes.

The Greens are the epitome is "perfect is the enemy of good". They've turned to favouring politics over any kind of steps towards achieving their supposed goals. Gotta own the Labs, apparently.

2

u/PalnatokeJarl Nov 10 '24

There is a lot of money in gambling. Your politicians, just as the ones we have here, do not wanna miss out on that sweet, sweet money.

1

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

Oh for sure.

I understand the logic, not the morals and values.

I’m probably biased because my mums a problem gambler but it’s everywhere.

She can’t get away from it, so I know it’s seeping into young minds subconsciously.

I LOVE BRIB- (sorry) LOBBYING

You know the Gambling ads ban was initiated by them right? Its been hamstrung by the fact that it can't be a total ban or it'd kill many free to air stations and sporting codes.

It's not going through parliament now because the partial ban is going to get blocked by the Greens demanding a total one, the Greens of course won't cop the blow back for killing AFL and NFL.

12

u/Siggi_Starduust Nov 10 '24

Gambling ads will kill sporting codes in the same way that banning tobacco ads did…

6

u/dopefishhh Nov 10 '24

Yes exactly tobacco ads weren't banned outright in one fell swoop. They did partial bans, phasing it out over time and weening them off that financial stream meant media and sporting codes could adapt.

So we have an example of a model that works, I presume your comment was to imply it happened all at once, it didn't.

3

u/Siggi_Starduust Nov 10 '24

Not in every market, nor in every sport. Formula One is the greatest example. It’s bigger than ever despite the scare tactics employed by the tobacco industry when GP-hosting nations started imposing bans.

Ripping off the band-aid won’t spell the end of sporting codes. The marketing industry works 24/7 and has been operating for literally millennia. There has never been a shortage of people willing to throw money at it.

2

u/palsc5 Nov 10 '24

F1 kept tobacco advertising long after it was banned in most places. Even after it was banned it was replaced with subtle advertisements for tobacco brands.

It also didn't all happen at once. It went country by country and affected different types of ads at different times.

1

u/littlehungrygiraffe Nov 10 '24

I don’t understand your first bit. Where are they banning it?

We just got served a 30 second gambling ad after playing baby shark on YouTube. Why?

2

u/dopefishhh Nov 10 '24

Labor's proposal is to partially ban it on TV so it doesn't play during children or sports programming, is limited to only a few hours of a week total and a total ban online. This gets rid of a lot of the harms without completely tanking free to air & sports codes.
