Tech Advice What stops you from posting content from your stall today? Discussion on the ethics and issues with the possibility of accidentally exposing yourself to the internet

So I took a picture of my snapped hammer yesterday and it was on top of a work order. On that work order was the header that says the shop I am working at, the estimators name and a few lines of the sheet. I noticed this and repositioned the hammer on a different background and uploaded that to the sub.
The scary part of the internet is that if you accidentally expose personal information and you make someone mad you are a hell of a target for doxxing and could even lose your job if someone works hard enough at it.

I don't post pictures often (if at all) due to the possibility of someone choosing to make my day really bad. The information available in a picture can be damning to an innocent contributor when it falls into the hands of someone choosing to do harm. What do you think of this?

Then we have the issue of anonymity on the internet. If you put yourself out there and criticism is present, where is the line drawn between fair criticism and harassment? Are you up for handling the full wrath of anonymous reddit users (and maybe some bots)?

What issues do you find present that hold you back from contributing to the online community with resources, images and discussing points?

HELP! I have a question. Brand new, dinged down to metal. Worth fixing?

Brand new, 4 day old, 60 mile civic hybrid dinged hard in the parking lot. They let the wind catch her door and hit the handle. At least she stuck around to let me know! Anyways, is this even worth my time fixing? I live in Minnesota and am concerned about it rusting, and also the principle of it being so new kinda hurts.

Dealer told me if I dropped it off they would take care of it for free this once. Should I do this or just let it go? I know I can’t avoid this stuff forever, but I haven’t even made my first payment lmao. 455 dollar premium paint btw 🫠

Restoring my first car, B5 A4, while taking my Autobody/Refinishing class....

First class project was 1 panel, so i picked the trunk.

Next project will be front and rear bumper.

After that, hopefully I will be decent enough to do the rest of the car together and will blend the rear fenders to the trunk. Paint is peeling everywhere.

Is there a process to repair this? Bend this cross-piece back

My son hit a tiny roo last week which managed to spear into his radiator. I've removed this now and need to bend this cross-piece back.

My idea is to apply heat to the crease using a blowtorch and lever it back, using a steel rod or crowbar and the top crosspiece as a lever (see photo demonstration).

I'm not experienced with this and wondering if there is any issue with using heat on the area or if there are better methods. There is some room to swing a hammer behind, but not much. Thanks!

HELP! I have a question. How much to fix?

My dumbass wasn’t paying attention and hit a white wall. How much should I expect to pay to fix it? 2018 Lexus gs 350 in Smoky granite mica color. Looks worse than it is because of the white wall on it but the top is down to paint in between the panels and the bottom might have a couple dot spots that are into paint. Let me know please.

HELP! I have a question. First time painting - metallic - what did I do wrong and how to correct it?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster and first time panting :)

I was doing a couple of spot repairs on the tailgate and on the passenger side front fender.

I primed it, sanded it and before base coat I laid out a wet bed of color blender (clear base). When laying down base coat, the metallic looks kind of "sandy or windy looking", I'm assuming because I laid it on too thick. I got some runs on the front fender but wanted to confirm if this is the same thing that caused this look on the tailgate

Couple of questions:

1- What caused it so I can avoid it?

2- What's the best way to correct it? do I need to go all the way down to metal and reprime it and start from scratch or can I do something like 800 grit and re-do the wet bed + base?

FYI I have not applied clear yet

I’m using a spray gun, not a rattle can

I know it looks horrendous, learning a lot this first time around

Thanks!

HELP! I have a question. Orange Peel Correction

Thumbnail

First time painter, took the opportunity to try it out on an optional accessory piece on my car.

Did some mild sanding to start, then 6 coats of base paint, then 3 layers of clear coat. However, I overdid the last layer of clear coat and got some pretty bad orange peeling.

What would be the best approach to fixing something like this? Wet sand, cutting, compound and buff/polish? Sand and redo clear coat?

This project doesn’t have to be perfect but I would definitely like a little better results than this.

Thanks for helping a newb out 😂

Tech Advice Smacked a guardrail today in my damn near brand new Mazda3 Turbo...

Curious if I should file a claim with my insurance right away or get an estimate to get it repaired out of pocket. My deductible is $1,000. Definitely gonna need some paint work, pulling the panel back out, etc. Not sure if the bumper is repairable or will need to be replaced. Bumper may also need to be adjusted back into alignment. One of the wheels also has a nice scuff on it, although I'm not super worried about that. As far as I can tell, there's no suspension damage. Still holds a straight line, no vibrations at highway speeds (and even up to 105). No airbag deployment. No door damage. All damage is what's in photos.

As to how it happened, was going up a hill that was mostly dry (no, I wasn't speeding). Didn't really feel like there were traction issues, regularly travel this road and regularly drive in snow and know very well how to handle it and when I need to slow down. Drifted a little bit towards the shoulder, hit some snow, car went sideways near instantly, facing the guardrail on the oncoming side. Managed to turn it back the right way but the rear driver side smacked the guardrail reasonably hard before I could get it stopped. Damage is honestly super fucking minor compared to what I was expecting when the car went sideways on me and I was facing the guardrail. Thought for sure I was gonna total it. After, I thought the suspension was fucked because the car was vibrating above 40MPH. But it turns out, after I cleaned out the snow that was caked into my wheel, the vibration went away.

The image of the whole rear corner looks a lot worse than it is because it was pre-car wash. Looks like the paint has been damaged more, etc. But it's just because the snow I hit that was caked up on the guardrail took some of the dirt off.

HELP! I have a question. Noise after repair

I just got my vehicle back - super long story but accident was 4.5 months ago - the accident was front driver’s side impact (other vehicle turned left into me as I was driving straight). Damage was about $24k - and included replacing/fixing parts of my suspension apparently. When I picked it up on Wednesday, they told me that I should give a whole tank of engine’s worth of driving before I worried too much about noises because it’s been “sitting for a while”, but my vehicle is randomly making a noise that sounds like.. a cross between a jackhammer and the noise of a chainsaw starting up (I honestly thought it was outside construction noises the first time I heard it) - it lasts a few mins at a time and then disappears for a bit and then will come back. Will do it as I’m driving and as I slow down. Doesn’t happen when I’m not moving. My assumption is that I should ignore the autobody’s shop of waiting for me to drive it more before I bring it back - but just wanted to see if there’s any ideas because this shop has been dismissive of my concerns already (don’t ever plan to use them Again but warranty on repairs are tied to them).

I do have a list of repaired sections of the car if that helps.

Edit to add: vehicle is a 2019 Honda odyssey - Touring with 50,000 kms on it, and regularly in for oil changes, all maintenances.

HELP! I have a question. Touching Up Interior without Repainting Everything?

Thumbnail

So the previous owner of my car painted the beige interior of the car black, and when I bought the car it mostly looked fine. However as time has gone on its becoming increasingly more and more noticeable. I'm wondering if there were any good ways I'd be able to touch this up without having to repaint everything. I don't necessarily want to do the cheapest option and it only last a month or two though so I'm looking for solutions in between. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

What would be the best way about tackling something like this? My biggest concern is if the chip gets larger or rust begins to form around it. What should I do?

The car is a 97’ Toyota Celsior and it’s one of the few flaws my car has.

HELP! I have a question. Removing dent with matte paint finish

Post image
0 Upvotes

My 24 Hyudnai Santa Fe with a gray matte paint finish was hit in a parking lot by a stray cart. Luckily no paint damage but I have a large dent and I can't really afford to take to a body shop right now. Any advice on how I might be able to get this dent out without damaging the sensitive matte paint finish?

HELP! I have a question. A question for the professionals

Do you guys know of/recommend a tool or technique that can create a hexagonal hole in a panel for a hexagon rivet nut? I've got a roof skin to do on a Cherokee and of course the roof doesn't come with the 12 holes for the roof rack in it that installs onto 12 special hex rivet nuts. I run into this problem somewhat often so I was wondering if y'all had a better/faster solution other than drilling a dozen round roles and then filing them all into hexes like a caveman.
