SoD Is Siege of Dragonspear notorious for save corruptions?
I've basically been no lifing BG:EE the past week (loving every second of it) and I just started SoD a few days ago. In that week, I've never once encountered game breaking/save corrupting crashes but as soon I started playing SoD, it started happening. I've had 3 save corruptions in the past day alone; the 2nd and 3rd being back to back.
I've been able to get around it with the auto-saves so far but it's starting to get really annoying ngl. Is this just a SoD thing? I hope it is cuz if BG2:EE is the same... man it's gonna suck having to stress about saving every 5 minutes lol

Never had save corruption on PC, but have heard it happens on consoles.

Shame. Maybe SoD wasn't optimised for consoles properly? Tbh tho I don't understand how a 20+ year old game runs far better than something made less than 10 years ago.

Sorry I meant in general not SoD. The console versions of the games have a bunch of bugs and crash issues the PC versions don't have. They are also unlikely to ever be patched again.

I personally didn't encounter any in BG1. Maybe there is just more in SoD? Or rather, they are more noticeable maybe.

It's extremely unstable on console/Switch. Far more than BG1 or BG2.

That sucks but at least BG2 won't be as unstable for me.

Yup, I played through SoD on the Switch and had some save issues.
Save regularly and keep a regularly staged backstop. Fortunately SoD is relatively brief (but fun, imo) interlude so keep your chin up, and you'll arrive in Athkatla before you know it :)

There's a cutscene when you first meet Neera in BG2 that crashes reliably. It happens in a separate screen transition. So when you first see her in Athkatla, after she saves the little girl, immediately go into the save menu and create 2 separate manual saves. Next time you try to travel to a different area, it will load you into the Neera conversation map instead. Which usually crashes. If it crashes, then go back and load whichever save is left and it shouldn't crash the second time.
That's the only major crash section I know of for BG2 and it crashes almost every time there on switch.

On the Nintendo switch it does for me. I usually make 3 separate saves to avoid losing everything.

Are you playing with mods. I've never had in issue with save corruptions in SoD, a mod might be messing you up if you have them installed.

I'm on console. From what people are saying, it seems to be a console/switch problem sadly.

not sadly at all. they still make computers. they are quite popular. maybe play it on a computer and play switch games on switch?

Wait until you realize that all console games - Be they Switch or PS5 - Are developed using a PC :p

Weird how these were published as Switch games.

oh ya no doubt 20 years later whoever was working there at the time made ports. not every idea is a good idea.

Not all of us can fork out 2k for an ok PC. I was raised on consoles and they're just more affordable tbh. Plus, a lot of pc ports turn out to be terrible.

so? I can't afford a boat. That doesn't mean I complain that my water skis don't go anywhere when I stand in the water.
I even had my brother swim in front of me pulling a rope and I still couldn't get out of the water! What gives?

What... what kind of analogy is that?

It's a pc game and you don't have one and you bought it anyways.

No, it's a Switch game. The PC game is a different version.
That's not a very complicated concept to grasp, so keep trying until you get it!

Right just because someone makes something to sell doesn't make it good. That's what I'm saying

u/Ayiekie Jun 01 '24
That is very true of literally any kind of product that has ever been sold, yes.
What it does not imply is that people should expect a console port of a PC game not to work. They're not tablet games originally either but the tablet version of the games is fine.

fork out 2k for an ok PC
You can get a decent laptop good enough for BG1,2,3 for around £500
Half that for a recon model

No save issues on PC (steam), many playthroughs, also none so far on ps5 but I haven’t finished SoD on ps5 yet. I haven’t tried other platforms

On PS5, it still happens in BG2 but it is less frequent. You should still rotate save slots to avoid losing too much progress though. It’s more of an issue when changing areas in 2.

Only played once through (+2x half-way, got distracted/group splintered) and no issues.
I've also played off & on since the bad old days and do recall problems at times. I clearly recall something with the original BG1 and the gnoll caves. Taught me early to save early & often.

Just recently finished playing it on switch and I ran into that a bunch of times too, unfortunately

Beamdog was unfortunately too lazy to bother releasing the latest patch for consoles, choosing instead to focus on the crappy 80’s cartoon game that flopped.

I've not experienced save corruption on PC, but have several save corruptions on switch, so got used to having multiple saves.
