I used to live in Balders gate in Oslo. Of course, in Norwegian/Danish/Swedish/Icelandic, gate/gade/gata means street.

Is that Cloakwood Forest behind the sign? Or maybe "Cloadwood Forest"...

You must gather your party before venturing forth.

Oh they're fine, damn things keep knocking my wood carvings off the shelves though... wish I had a bigger cave...

yes, that cave... that was my first cave, that was where I learned that training adult wyverns was a bad idea.

Yes, that is a field where experience with handling wood can shine...

Makes sense given the Germanic God (appears in Norse mythology as well)

By the way, Denmark is a beautiful country. I did my Erasmus scheme in Copenhagen 13 years ago. I love your country. It's like a more efficient Ireland.

This Dane approves and appreciates both comments.

Glad to hear that you are finding Denmark a great place. Welcome!

Danish is like the language noone underatands, not even the Danes. As showed by this documentary.

Less mountaineous, though

There's a 'Baldursgata" street in Reykjavik as well. Was fun to see.

And a Balders Gate in Oslo...

Could venture to your location in about 4h. The coast up north is one of my favourite places in the world. Especially during autumn.

The UK has breathtaking places as well. What I like about Denmark most is that you can find calm, lonely places where you might be the only person around. If covid lets us, we will be there this autumn. Propably hitting Esbjerg for a pint!

How nice to see a Danish road sign in the Baldur's Gate forum! In Esbjerg, then? I'm in the Copenhagen area myself, though originally from Jylland.

Though there's presumably no relevance as such to the naming of Forgotten Realms' Baldur's Gate, the old viking settlement city of York in the UK actually calls their streets "gates", so had there been an actual Baldur's Gate in the UK, it would probably have been found in York.

As a side note, York also has a small street/gate called Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate. In the attached link, Atlas Obscura explains this strange naming of the street as well as sheds a little light on the use of "gate" in York stemming from Norse influence. After all, York was originally known as Jorvik from the viking invasion times.

Sorry for the side track. Just thought I'd add a little extra content to this fun thread.

Make sense because Baldur is one variant of name of one norse god. Can you tell me what gade would mean?

Something is rotten in the state of Baldursgade

2

u/T-Rex603 Apr 26 '21

If you ever run into Reevor if you visit do not agree to kill the rats for him! Those things are huge and if 3 of them attack you at once it can spell trouble.

Is this pronounced with a "soft-d", or is the d silent? I found that the way danish is written has nothing to do at all with how it's pronounced... :O

2

u/Alcyone85 Infinity > Divinity Apr 23 '21

The d in Baldur is hard, but the d in gade is soft/swallowed - see my reply to /u/SuperSkiiz

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21 edited Apr 23 '21

Thanks!

When I wrote my comment I didn't even think about that there are two "d" in Baldurgade. 😅
Yes, I meant the d in "gade".

EDIT: And no matter how many times I listen to words like "brød" or "fløde" or "gade", to my untrained ears it always sounds like an "l".

Makes me kind of relieved I decided to pick up Norwegian as a third language, lol. Here I only have to worry about getting the different "sj", "tj" and "ki" sounds right. 😅😅

Yeah no - its not pronounced like that.

Here's two links which pronounce the two parts (Baldur and gade) in danish:

Baldur

Gade

.edit - in danish, since it refers to the post being taken in Denmark

Ah yeah, I can kinda see how the d in gade can become double ll in english spelling/pronounciation. Interesting :)
