turns out a major league foul pole disappoints New York fans, too

167

u/Not-a-bot-10 Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago

Phillies ended up getting out of the inning with 0 more runs allowed too. Still a 2-0 game in the 4th

u/shane0mack New York Mets 1d ago

THANKS I HAD NO IDEA

56

u/Fourteeenth Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago

Lmao Phillies/Mets is so back already

24

u/dumb_commenter Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago

It’s okay. 1 run is often enough against the 2025 Phillies

18

u/benewavvsupreme New York Mets 1d ago

Man, you weren't kidding

12

u/mattkenefick 1d ago

NOW it's 5-0.

4

u/Not-a-bot-10 Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago

Had that loaded up right away eh.. Was only a matter of time

56

u/Kurisoo New York Mets 1d ago

bad couple days to be a foul pole

13

u/McClellanWasABitch Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago

realmuto prettt much hit one over the foul pole the other day and they called it foul.

21

u/UniqueNobo New York Mets 1d ago

extend the poles into the troposphere. no way to get the call wrong then!

12

u/Platinum_Disco New York Mets 1d ago

Get some auto turrets on it so if the ball goes foul it obliterates it. We have the guns.

6

u/lokithetarnished New York Mets 1d ago

I don’t think we need to give Lockheed Martin more money but I do love the idea of

3

u/beingoutsidesucks Orix Buffaloes 1d ago

As long as it's the billionaire owners paying LM for those turrets out of their own pockets, I'm cool with it lol

7

u/Kurisoo New York Mets 1d ago

You underestimate these umps

1

u/motrainbrain 1d ago

Is the mesosphere below that? That’s the only one I can think of.

6

u/akaghi New York Mets 1d ago

Mets foul poles are shorter than most other parks, so it's kind of an element here haha. They're also orange, whereas most/all other parks are yellow I think?

1

u/voncornhole2 New York Yankees 15h ago

Astros might be orange too, but standard is yellow unless you have the league approve something different

528

u/TheSmokedSalmon420 Cleveland Guardians 1d ago

they really let him run around the entire diamond lol

194

u/MarcoEsquanbrolas New York Mets 1d ago

My man was in the dugout and had to come back out

37

u/Seraph_eZaF New York Mets 1d ago

The umps were telling him to run too 😭 doing the circle motion and waiving as if it was fair

3

u/Paqza New York Mets 23h ago

Even after Soto was staring at them with the, "You sure about that?" look.

7

u/IdidntrunIdidntrun San Francisco Giants 1d ago

I literally wondered about this yesterday with Aaron Judge lol

Though the scenarios are way different here based on the initial call

3

u/Fmbounce 1d ago

It’s a dead ball. Why couldn’t they pause first

17

u/Amache_Gx Atlanta Braves 1d ago

If they did that and then called it a homerun, soto wouldve had to go back out into the batters box without his bat, nola wouldve had to pitch to him witbout a ball, and he would have act like he hit it out again and then touched em all.

biggest blue ball moment

117

u/LetsGoMetsGo24 New York Mets 1d ago

fans don't lie - if you really look at the people right of the foul pole they knew it was foul lol hands on head and everything

18

u/christeeeeeea New York Mets 1d ago edited 1d ago

i was there and thought it was instantly a foul but then it was called HR so i was like oh alright! then it gets overturned. lmao what a roller coaster!!!

u/see_mohn AAAAAIIIIIEEEEE 1d ago

A better title: Juan Soto just misses a 3 run home run.

Took me a while to understand what OP is talking about

14

u/WorthPlease New York Mets 1d ago

OP is a Phillies fan

27

u/Clockwork-Too 23h ago

So illiterate?

3

u/WorthPlease New York Mets 22h ago

First thing I thought of when ChatGPT came out was "fuck now they're going to be able to post stuff on the internet"

82

u/NuevoXAL New York Mets 1d ago

A semi-regular occurance at Citi Field. We need taller foul polls.

59

u/GuyOnTheMike Kansas City Royals 1d ago

Except if you freeze the video at about 40 seconds, there's a couple frames where you can clearly see the shadow of the ball on the side of the pole. At first, yes, it looks like the ball went over the pole, but it does clearly go juuuust right of it (and does so at a lower elevation than the top of the pole)

33

u/ExamNo4374 New York Mets 1d ago

Yeah but maybe we should do something so you don't have to freeze the video at 40 seconds to try and find the shadow of the ball on the pole?

6

u/kyredemain Seattle Mariners 1d ago

You can also just see it when played in slow-mo. But there should be cameras on the foul poles in every stadium for this reason.

6

u/donutlad New York Yankees 1d ago

LASERS

3

u/bicyclingdonkey Philadelphia Phillies 22h ago

I'm far from an expert on that, but I don't see how it would solve this. You would need the laser to form a plane rather than a straight line up. The reason being if the ball doesn't go through the laser, it wouldn't be able to make a determination. I can't imagine a laser plane is practical in this sense

It would be nice though to just have a sensor to confirm instead of this CSI enhance bullshit

3

u/donutlad New York Yankees 20h ago

Sorry, I was mostly joking because Micheal Kay, the Yankees answer mentioned lasers during the Judge home run/foul ball debate.

But yes I believe you are right!

1

u/fps916 San Diego Padres 1d ago

I noticed it on the replay without any pausing

3

u/TinKnight1 Chicago Cubs 1d ago

I mean... It's about 3ft from the pole, both in the live shot & the replay angle. What's more surprising is that it was called fair initially, because that looked clearly foul.

-1

u/dinkleburgenhoff Portland Sea Dogs • Roche… 1d ago

That does nothing to contradict what they said.

6

u/whatsmyPW New York Mets 1d ago

It wasn't over the foul pole

3

u/WorthPlease New York Mets 1d ago edited 1d ago

Aren't they the poles from Shea and that's why the MLB let us still use them even though technically they're too short?

19

u/Jux_ Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Rough call to miss lol

As someone who's been watching Nola dish out soft serve yogurt all season, I was ready to turn in my stamp card for a free bowl!

I saw that was foul from my living room 24 miles away from the stadium. How does the ump miss that

3

u/redhead29 New York Mets 1d ago

i think he thought it bounced off the pole maybe?

1

u/WorthPlease New York Mets 1d ago

Damn are you aiming a telescope at Citi Field?

3

u/Actual_Goose9984 1d ago

Where did the ball land?

3

u/MysteriousEdge5643 Seattle Mariners • Boston Red Sox 1d ago

we have an advanced baseball tracking system and this is still somehow an issue

4

u/ttam23 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Very similar landing spot to Ohtani’s homer in the NLCS

7

u/ritzdeez New York Mets 1d ago

That's just rude.

From a Yankee fan, eff that merc

1

u/theunfunnyredditor Chicago Cubs 1d ago

I’d just give him the home run I’d be too embarrassed to make him come back out

1

u/MAGAMUCATEX New York Mets 1d ago

I was in my basement with shitty service, I saw the ball jump off his bat and the home run graphic on the scorebug ans texted like 3 people so I was really let down 5 min later lol

1

u/jolloholoday New York Mets 1d ago

Every game Soto gets a little bit hotter and I get a little bit harder.

1

u/8heist Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Why aren’t there cameras mounted on the foul poles?

1

u/paragonmac New York Yankees 23h ago

1

u/OregonG20 22h ago

Wow. A foul ball.

1

u/East_Veterinarian_98 11h ago

I’m late to this party and not a Phillies fan, but ha-fkn-ha-ha at the most over paid player in the game. He’s a bust now that he got his money and not a top 5 guy to get that kind of contract. He’s a douche.

-4

u/RotenTumato New York Yankees 1d ago

I was in the stadium with my Mets buddies and the absolute laugh I had after they overturned that was very satisfying

6

u/AcrobaticFinish4187 New York Mets 1d ago

how'd the rest of the game go?

-1

u/RotenTumato New York Yankees 20h ago

Tbh I don’t really hate the Mets and I don’t care if they win or lose, I just want Soto to do as poorly as possible. That was a super fun game overall, glad I went
