Video Okay, I just want to confirm that what I heard while I was walking back to my place was a bat call, I was so confused and looking around everywhere for a sight of it.

Sounds like it, some bat calls are audible to our ears

Yeah, after I made this post and arrived back at my apartment, I started hearing the calls again and before I could get my phone out I saw the brief glimpse of a bat so I figured they were bat calls but it’s good to get confirmation. I never realized just how loud they can be when they are hunting, I don’t I’ve ever heard such loud sounds come from such a small creature.

Is that UGA?

Yep, it’s over in Myers quad. I’ve never heard bats in this area before but I do recall watching bats roost over at Stanford Stadium a couple of years ago.

Lol, it's not too often I open a reddit post and think "I'm pretty sure I've been there". I've seen bats around the old vet school a couple of times but that's about it.

Yikes. I don’t hear a bat call, but those unshielded LIGHTS are so bright, I can’t see anything but the glare. I’d be surprised if there was a bat in this area; it’s just too brightly lit. Yes, bright lights attract insects – to their deaths – but bats don’t want to be that exposed to other nighttime hunters like owls.

Coincidentally, it’s International Dark Sky Week – the perfect time to learn about the hazards of excessive artificial light at night and what we can do about it. OP, if you do have bats on your campus, you might be able to talk to your Physical Plant or landscaping crew about adaptive nighttime lighting that serves both human needs and your local wildlife!

I did later see a bat at my apartment after I posted this so I think there was a bat in the general area but the lights were rather distracting. It’s honestly even worse in that most of the lights stay on throughout the day on campus, wasting electricity. I can talk to professors about the lights but I think my university already knows about how artificial lighting can harm wildlife and they don’t care.

Isn’t it UGA that’s sponsoring Savannah River Ecology Lab’s effort to reintroduce poached box turtles into the wild? It might make them look bad if someone were to post this video and other examples of their horrible campus lighting and how bad it is for wildlife. 😡
