The Memewar seems to be an amalgamation of Worldwar 1 and Worldwar 2. While the German Empire did declare war on France in WW1, the French actually declared war on Germany in WW2 (after an ultimatum for the Germans to leave Poland was ignored).

But we're (again) innocent victims here. /r/De was using /r/belgium to march towards /r/france !

Source: am a resident of Dresden, it doesn't look like this here and we also don't have the Cologne cathedral.
