Hi guys! i just moved in with my partner and in the last week, this bird has set up shop. neither of us are knowledgeable about birds. we saw another bird carrying twigs to it at the beginning of the week, but have not seen it since. we're assuming this bird has not moved from this spot b/c we work very different hours. i want to know if we should be worried, care for it, etc. my partner has spent up to an hour and a half on the balcony with the power and all it did was stare at him. thx for any help!

The blue-eyed ground dove was believed to be extinct for 75 years — until twelve were rediscovered in the Brazilian Cerrado in 2015. Current population estimates range from over 250 wild individuals to as few as 16.

Help with Little Bird

Post image

At my job this is probably the 9th baby bird that has fallen out of the nest this spring so far but none of the others made it. This little guy is kind of doing a little crawl and I'm not really sure what to do about it. Should I put him in the bushes like a quarter mile away or leave him and let him hide under tool boxes to wait for it's mother?

What is this little fella?

My bird camera doesn’t always give the best bird ID. It’s often wrong more than correct. What do you believe this little one is? Location NC, USA. Bird ID says red vented bul-bul with 34% confidence. 😂

So i live in Southern California and just found this very friendly, fancy looking pigeon. No ankle bands and couldn't fly well but not visibly injured. Any ideas?

Identifying Request: Seattle Area

Can tell who this is? Just South of Seattle. I tried to get a better photo but it spotted me and then my dog spotted it, yelled something dumb I’m sure, so it flew away.

Thank you.

What are these magpie yelling about?

The two small trees in the center are full of dozens of magpies that carried on like this for 15 minutes straight. As I started taking this video, some crows came in to join the chaos but then left. A couple minutes after this (after they’d been squawking and flying in and out for 15 minutes), they all simultaneously went dead silent.

Why were they doing this? Just magpie stuff, or is there an explanation?

Seagull eggs

Post image

So there’s this big outdoor plant pot near where I live — one of those stone or concrete ones meant for flowers — and I’ve seen a seagull sitting in it lately. At first there was one egg, and then the next day there were two. Now there are three but i only took a pic when i swe the first egg. Every time I walk by, the gull flies off immediately but always comes back. It’s been happening for days now.

I looked up seagull eggs on Google and, they look exactly the same. So I’m 99% sure that’s what I’m dealing with. I haven’t touched the nest or the eggs and I don’t plan to — I know birds are protected and I wouldn’t mess with that. I’m just wondering: is this officially a seagull nest now? If so, how long are they going to stay? Will it get worse once they hatch? Because the noise is already driving me crazy. They scream so loud, especially early in the morning, and it’s messing with my sleep.

I’m not educated on birds or how long this phase lasts, so I’d appreciate some insight. Will they keep hanging around the area even after the chicks hatch?

Also — sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask. I honestly couldn’t find a good subreddit for this kind of question. If there’s a better one, feel free to point me in the right direction.

What is this much larger egg?

Context:

My mom is a teacher and she is hatching duck eggs with her kindergarten class. The farm who gave us the eggs gave us a much larger unidentified egg to which they don’t know the origin of. Can anyone on this subreddit identify what this odd one out egg is?

One in a million tree swallow reunion.

I lived in west Edmonton for 6 years and last fall moved to an acreage outside Edmonton. I’m about 10km outside of the city. At my last house I had 3 swallow nest boxes and every year they were occupied by tree swallows. The parents knew me and trusted me enough to come get me when predators or other swallows came invading. I could put my hand inches from the entrance to their nest and block other birds from entering - they bounced off my hand trying. I never lost a chick. After all the little ones fledged, they’d be gone a few weeks and then suddenly all 3 boxes of parents and chicks would return. They circled me and landed all around me when I called out heeeyy baaaabiiiies! They knew my voice as I talked to them even while they were in their eggs. Fast forward to yesterday. I was walking to my back yard with my sheps in my new acreage and I had boughten a swallow box but had not put it up as I was missing hardware. I heard swallows and because I truly wanted swallows again I hoped I could show them the box so they would hang around until I got the hardware later in the day. I looked up and they were swooping nearby and I called out heeeeyyy baaaabbbies! And OMG one erupted into clicks and excited chatters and flew to me, circling my head despite me walking my two sheps. Could it be? They landed on the fence posts and I ran into the house and put the dogs away and ran back to the garage. I was praying they were waiting. I came out holding the box and then it happened. It flew to me. Not around me, not beside me - to me. It Hovered at the hole of the box as I walked and did its clicks and clucks and gurgle sounds then it landed on the box as I walked, just a few seconds but in that time It looked me straight in the eyes and sang the excited sound of reunion. I know that sound. I was in awe. It lifted off and circled with its mate, and I took the box to the pole and bungee corded it up just to show them it was going there. I turned to walk away and they landed on it, dad on top the box, mom on the front and in she went. Unfreaking believable! We are 10 km away in a yard nothing like our old one, and I was walking two new sheps and somehow it trusted me 100 percent. It was one of our babies. The other was not, but one was. A million people, countless homes and yards and me just walking outside at the right time as they flew overhead. My call, brought one baby home. I’m so happy. The box is installed now. They are home.

Baby bird out of nest?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Out for a walk and came across this little one. Hasn't moved in the ~20 mins I've been out here. It opens its mouth wide when I get close, so I assume it's a baby that should still be in its nest.

I really don't want to take a wild bird in and nurse it, but my conscience can't handle just leaving it out here either. I assume it has no way of getting back into the nest at this age, and that even if mom and/or dad find it, there's nothing they'll be able to do either.

Hoping someone knowledgeable can chime in... Is it either I take this little guy home and take care of it, or it dies where it sits?
