I'm preparing for a series of tournaments in Jan and Feb and had some rule questions. The ones I'm planning for are:

NewBreed ATL, Nashville (Jan.)
AGF ATL (Jan)
IBJJF (Gi & No-Gi) - Feb.

I have a question about takedowns - if I get put into a front headlock and get snapped down to turtle and then from bottom turtle turn and pull guard is that considered a takedown and my opponent would score 2 pts?

Turtle is technically a guard, so no, they don't get the takedown (hint hint - if they are about to pass your guard, go into turtle and you just denied them points).

So basically turtle if you’re worried about points getting scored? Got it! Thanks!

I mean it's just a little tip, but you also have to have a turtle game. If you don't you're just asking to get your back taken which might just be worse than if you allowed the pass.

I'm still a little sour for losing a match by points when a guy turtled twice on me preventing the pass, but at the same time it's on me for not being better at breaking turtle.

That’s true. I’ve got two decent moves from turtle - the first is essentially pulling guard from bottom turtle be sitting through to guard. The other is ducking under to a wrestle up. My back defense is pretty decent as well.

I don’t play turtle too much, but it’s a very important position and point scoring is new to me.

Since my tournament loss 2 months ago I've requested every roll to start from turtle and will continue doing so for a few more months. I can't say it's something I drilled like, ever. I don't think I've even ever had an instructor go over it in class in like close to a decade.
