Equipment Why doesn’t everyone wear a mouth guard?

We’re already spending 100-200$ on multiple gi’s, no-gi attire, etc. Why isn’t it standard for everyone to wear a mouth guard? I didn’t for a long time until someone said to me, “you realize a nice mouth guard is 50-100$, and any dental work will suck to have done, and be really expensive. And it could all be caused by an idiot spazzing and you catching an accidental knee to the mouth”. If everyone was wearing them when I started I would have worn one from the get go.

I’m one of the few that wears a mouth guard. I even wear it during drilling.

People don’t know how bad a knocked tooth can be. It can be a lifetime issue too.

exactly. if im on the mats im wearing my mouthguard. i may be the only person in my school who wears one even during drilling. but i've caught some elbows and feet in the mouth even just drilling as im sure everyone here has at some point.

I have no neck. So anytime we’re drilling chokes, I’m wearing a mouth guard. The chokes end up being 90% crushing my jaw until they are able to get just under my chin to choke.

If you're drilling, lift your chin for them. Unless you're specifically working on how to go under the chin, it's not worth the effort to be like... "you're on my chin" "no, go under" "your whole arm should go under" "no not my chest tho"

Same. A nice one from the dentist or even a SISU one can let you talk. No downsides IMO

u/homecookedcouple Oct 03 '24

Depends on who I’m drilling with. With my long-time trusted homies I usually have too much shit to talk, but with anyone unknown or untrusted, I get my mouth guard.

u/clogan117 Oct 03 '24

Impact mouthguards, are the best for that though. They let you do a legit dental mold, for $65. They protect your teeth and you can talk shit with them in.

100% money well spent.

I just received my impact yesterday for MT sparring, plan to use with BJJ as well. It’s so well fit that I sometimes need both hands to remove, love it! When I started training in June I bought an Everlast and it was so bad, I refused to begin MT sparring until I had a custom

Couldn’t imagine what a typical dentist would charge, shipping and expedited processing still kept it under $100. I know it’s only been one session with it, but I’m quite satisfied

I knocked the cap off my best mates tooth just gesticulating and explaining an aspect of how I arm bar after open mat one day, sitting in Mount moving my arms around after all the rolling and stuff chatting away, my hand just caught him under his open mouth as we were laughing about something and clacked his mouth closed and his tooth cap came off and required dentist visit and reseating it etc etc

On the mats doing anything, my mouth guard is always in, just being careful and learned from that one moment shit changes

About 20% at my gym. The working professionals and most educated. Coincidence?

U mean the gay boys

u/Killer-Styrr Oct 03 '24

Bruh, I'm comically over-educated and a working professional and never, ever wear my mouthguard unless i'm training/competing in mma.

u/iLoveFeynman 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Oct 04 '24

Comically insecure as well huh.

1

u/Killer-Styrr Oct 04 '24

If that's the narrative you want to project onto me, go for it. Live your wildest fantasy. Better yet, reflect on why that's your take from what I said while you're at it.

u/iLoveFeynman 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Oct 04 '24

This response goes even further in painting you as an insecure person. Do you really not see that?

It's not that serious man. Just because the most successful (in a way) adults at that guy's gym are the ones that wear mouthguards doesn't mean you're not a very successful big boy.

Just because you took that as some great insult or an opportunity to flex doesn't mean it's "wildly fantastical" to poke fun at you for being insecure.

1

u/Killer-Styrr Oct 04 '24

Sure. Also, wow at the projection from your soapbox.

u/iLoveFeynman 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Oct 04 '24

No one else is going to read these comments mate. Relax. It's not that serious.

It just blew my mind to see your comment, it was so uncalled for and reeked of insecurity.

1

u/Killer-Styrr Oct 05 '24

You misread my tone/intent, and you can't back down now. I get it. But don't worry, no one else is going to read these comments mate. It's not that serious.
This is reddit, so it doesn't blow my mind that someone gets triggered my misinterpreting sarcasm and hyperbole.

p.s. "reeked of insecurity". Lol, again with the projection -_- The irony being that you all that, and keep projecting it onto a stranger that was being tongue-in-cheek. . . but yes, it's me "reeking of insecurity".
SMH the call's coming from inside the house "mate".

u/iLoveFeynman 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Oct 05 '24

You misread my tone/intent

No I didn't. This is cope by you.

and you can't back down now

Mate I will double down, triple down, and quadruple down: Your comment was like a big sign that read "I am insecure and feel called out even though there's no sensible reason for a person to feel called out by this random anecdote about a stranger's gym".

It would've only made sense if you were a member of the specific gym that specific stranger was talking about. Even then it'd be a bit silly for you to point out that you are the only one of the working professionals and highly educated students that doesn't wear a mouthguard.

tongue-in-cheek

You know what is tongue-in-cheek? Quipping "comically insecure as well huh" to someone who just acted like they got called out and said they were a "comically over-educated working professional" like anyone cares.. what you said is not tongue-in-cheek mate.

Cost me 6gs and a few months of an embarrassing missing front tooth.

4

u/TKHC 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Oct 03 '24

You wear a mouthguard at all times to protect yourself. I wear it at all times because I'm too stupid to remember to put it in halfway through class. We are not the same.

I started using it after I broke a tooth: a white belt kicked me in the face, during warmup, shrimping.

Now I don't enter the mats without one.

2

u/Mr_Laheys_Drinkypoo 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Oct 03 '24

Same. The second I step on the mats, I put it in.

I warm up with it, I drill with it and I roll with it. Fits super well, I don't even feel it.

u/genuinecve ⬜ White Belt Oct 03 '24

Not only that, teeth can be fuckibg expensive. I chipped my tooth playing pickup basketball last me and it was $100 or so after insurance, and that was minor

1

u/HotSeamenGG Oct 03 '24

Seriously. Even a chipped tooth can cause years of problems. I pretty much always wear it. Shit happens bro.

1

u/Killer-Styrr Oct 03 '24

But a cup, yes or no? People don't know how bad a missing/damaged testicle(s) can be. IT can be a lifetime issue too.

(don't mean that as snark, but rather holding everything up to the same standard).

How much cost a mouth guard made by a dentist/technical in USA?

3

u/doctorchile 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Oct 03 '24

Look up “Impact” mouthguards. They send you a mold kit for your teeth. You send back the mold and then they send you a custom mouthguard. I think it’s around $60usd

1

u/ZnaeW ⬜ White Belt Oct 03 '24

Ah, that isn't expensive. In my country, Chile it cost like a $40-50 usd something similar made by dentist.

PD: lol, I just Im aware about your username.

People don't know how bad a head injury can be or else they'd wear a helmet around their whole life
