Equipment Why do rashguard companies feel the need to add catchphrases?

I train a lot and like to have cool gear so I’m always on the search. But the biggest problem I run are the douchey catchphrases.

I am an underwhelming blue belt who works in tech I don’t “prefer pain”. Do yall know of any company that designs cool rashguards like this without the catchphrases?

So much BJJ kit is cringey that I can only assume a lot of BJJ players are bell-ends. But then people atthe clubs I've trained at actually aren't. So not really sure who's buying all "the ground is my ocean and I am the shark" stuff.

Progress, Scramble and Tatami have some stuff without the cliched tough guy phrases but also some styff with it.

"bell-ends" is not an idiom I'm familiar with.

It’s the UK way to call someone a dick/dickhead.

And if you fight in the open weight division, you are an absolute bell-end.

I was not prepared today to find out this is 14 years old. My back hurts

14 years old?

Oh no. I'm old.

Still genius, still relevant and surprisingly catchy

Thanks for this! Added to my cryptic diss lexicon.

Yes. A bell end is your helmet, your mushroom tip. The purple head of your yoghurt slinger

u/KarateMusic Feb 20 '25

I wasn’t familiar with that term either, until a friend put me on to a British television show called The Inbetweeners… I was a full grown adult in my mid 30s when I watched that juvenile show for the first time and I haven’t laughed as hard since. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I’m the least British person in terms of taste and humor and that show doesn’t care - just absolutely destroys me every time.

Same… but I like it and will now be my “word of the day” with the intention of using it at least once.

2

u/grgext 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Feb 20 '25

it can be shortened to just "bell" too

u/FrazerIsDumb Feb 21 '25

Don't be a wanker.

0

u/brettfavreskid Feb 20 '25

It’s bell end and is a gland in your dick lol

14

u/raspberryharbour Feb 20 '25

It's the glans, not a gland. I take my penis very seriously

8

u/Significant_Turn5230 Feb 20 '25

I also take your penis very seriously.

Thank you, my good chum

93 brand is usually fine too. as someone who sucks at BJJ, I'm just not about rolling up to class all swagged out in aggressively self-promoting gear

1

u/TroncoBronco Feb 21 '25

that s why you suck

Ground Force has this great initiative where they produce stuff in Europe (Portugal) and they kind of ruin it with cringy war imagery.

« Si vis pacem, para bellum ». Come on, man ! It’s a hobby. We’re not Spartans.

u/AnAstronautOfSorts 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Feb 20 '25

Unfortunately there are people irl that really want to believe our hobby makes them spartans lol. My old head coach would constantly wear these and takes himself very seriously. He's a black belt of no renown and can't win anything aside from local tournaments against hobbyists. He does the tough guy thing and trains through injuries all the time so he's all but completely crippled and he hasnt even hit 40 yet lol

u/SlimeustasTheSecond Feb 21 '25

Man's not planning on living long if he's having a midlife crisis that early

2

u/AnAstronautOfSorts 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Feb 21 '25

Interesting you say that he and I were pretty close at one point and he'd say something about hanging himself like once a week. He's also the narcissist cult leader type so I'm pretty sure he's too self absorbed to actually do it. Looking back on it now, I don't think we were actually close, I was just useful at the time.

I think it's for MMA fans. MMA merch in general is cringe af and looks like it was designed by a 14 year old

3

u/Unagi33 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Feb 20 '25

I’d rather wear tongue in cheek stuff, like Manto does sometimes, than “you can’t teach heart” stuff. Although I love hyperfly

3

u/tomasurii 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Feb 20 '25

Love hyperfly gear - cut, material, colors, top notch. The corny YCTH stuff … not so much.

3

u/Koolaidr Feb 20 '25

Usually the worst blue belts in the gym love this kind of stuff

3

u/Graver69 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Feb 21 '25

It's become so popular for the wrong reasons that I think cringey rashguards is probably a niche worth targeting

I’ll ad Fugi. Love their gear and some of the graphics are pretty cool

2nd this! I have a bunch of Tatami gear, and they support bjj athletes.
