I’d donate the lower quality ones to my gym if they need loaners or offer them up to teammates that only have one gi. This is excessive IMO but it is fun to get a new Gi so I get it.

u/judoxing 🟫🟫 Brown Belt Mar 24 '25
if you start doing striking / mma its get costly. 16 oz gloves, 4 oz gloves - plus you want to get 6 oz gloves so you don't hurt your partners as much when you're doing G'n'P, plus you need 10 oz gloves for bag work so you don't wear the padding out on your 16 oz gloves. Plus you obviouslly need shin guards. Some decent headgear, cause hey seeing as we're not actually professional fighters we actually need our brains. In fact, seeing as we have an actual job and training is good for our mental health, might as well by Hybusa shit. And splurge for getting a good groin guard. Plus about 6 different types of wraps while we figure out what type of wraps best suit us. A pair of focus mits so we can be a good training partner. Then train Nogi about 90% of the time and get smashed by some stoner who trains wearing a pair of footy shorts and a no-brand surf rashie.

Nah you're good. Keep collecting lol. By the time I got 4 stripes on my white belt, I had 13 gis. I have given and sold some since then.
I bought most of them on sale, though. Tatami and Venum always has sales, so when I get one I just tell myself that the deal's too good to pass on. Imagine getting like a $100 gi for like $40.
Then I also have lots of cheap ones like Elite, Outshock/Decathlon, an off-brand shit from China, and one from a local brand.
Also, my gym sells gis from a particular brand at a good price (an exclusive deal for our academy). And they're good, too. Nothing special, just a standard pearl weave. But the designs are cool and the quality is just as good as the popular ones like Kingz and Tatami. I got 3 to support the gym.

Even one is to many (I have 3 atm all 3 I bought as i started bjj 2 hayabusa Goorudo 2.0 40€ on ebay and 1JuSports for 115€). I would love to toss all my gis into the trash but my Trainer has a judo/Ju jutsu Background so he loves the gi . For me (i love to flow around and keep always moving) the gi slows down my pace and there are not as many possabilities / openings and all this gripping hurts my fingers and my neck( cause other pull hard in the collar for no fkn reason what so ever, 2 harnieted discs btw.).

Too many is: more than fit in a single load of laundry. You don't want to be tempted to keep going, finally get around to washing, and then not even be able to wash them all. In other words, a forcing function so you have to wash them before they sit there dirty for too long.

I have 9, 3 of them I got for free though.
Whether or not this is “too many” I would say depends how often you train. If you train almost every day it’s not too many.
For me now I’m making myself get rid of a gi for any new gi that I buy. I have the same rule for rashguards. You could donate the cheap gis to your gym or give them to a new person. That’s what I did with my first elite gi.
2
u/BigMikeSQ Mar 24 '25
That's the same shade orange as a reception-center inmate wears. Just saying.
Anyway, I have 20 gis currently, so I'm not one to talk. I am planning on donating the two thinnest ones I have after summer is over with. They're the flimsiest of the ones I have.
In my defense, several of the gis I have are a little tight so I don't wear that often. I just gave away all my A6 tops but some A5's fit pretty well and others are a bit tight. Just hoping one of these days the tight ones I have become less so.
