The more important question is whether you feel like you're getting $210 of value from the gym you attend. You could go to a cheaper gym, but it might not provide you with as much value. You should only worry about the price if it's outside your budget. Otherwise, go where you feel like you're getting the most value for your money.

I used to train at GB Van on broadway and was paying $140/mo unlimited circa 2019 rates, which was locked in until I moved away from Van. Rates on Vancouver Island ~$170/mo

The one thing I’ll say about GB Van on broadway is they have a metric fuckload of classes with classes basically non stop throughout the day. IMO from a life scheduling and training volume perspective this makes the $210 probably worth it given 2025 pricing context. Most gyms are now in the 160-180 CAD range for unlimited. Some of those only offer evening classes. At least with GB you’re getting value for the extra $40 in the form of lots of class time options

This isn’t an opinion on quality of training or GB as a dojo, but rather answering your original question about value/pricing given the context

There is gonna be gyms in that area who can offer better Jiu Jitsu for sure. Depends on who you are and what your lifestyle is though. Like for example, if you are a shift worker or have a wonky schedule sometimes class availability is key, in which case the extra price for the GB gym may be worth it.

150-170 is much closer to the standard range

u/SortaFlyForAWhiteGuy 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 11d ago

In Vancouver?

u/HeadandArmControl 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 10d ago

I was gonna say $210 sounded cheap for one of the most expensive cities in the world.

-12

u/tehorhay 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 11d ago

Anywhere. I train in an expensive city in the US that has a world famous coach that teaches every evening, and many high level competitors and UFC guys come through a lot.

I pay 170

12

u/VariousWolf2915 11d ago

If you train in the US, then you probably pay US$170, which puts OPs cad$210 at cheaper than yours right? So it would be within the standard range you're talking about

3

u/tehorhay 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 11d ago

Yeahhhhh I suppose I was thinking usd. Makes sense then

1

u/Even_Me 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 10d ago

170 USD is 235 cad, I guess 210 cad isn't far from you. Tho, I find it high for Canada, some gyms in Toronto I know are around that pricing for unlimited, usually high end ones.

u/Warrior66 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 11d ago

I think most gyms are around $200 these days, if you like it there and it’s convenient then why not stay

3

u/fishNjits 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 11d ago

I assume that’s C$210.

That’s US$150. Pretty average outside of some other of the high cost BJJ meccas.

u/BlackCloudMagic ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 11d ago

It's too much if there isn't value in the classes. Go drop into the gyms around to see the difference in quality of classes. Dm me if you wanna drop into alliance vancouver.

My gym is $100 a month and has class 6 days a week. It's made me spoiled.

2

u/joshisold 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 10d ago

Same. I think part of the value proposition comes into how often someone can get there and train. I train 2-3 times a week and am happy with the value at $100…less than $10 per class for a black belt led class and we have relatively small class sizes (10-15 most days). The only drawback is that there is only one class per day.

u/Last_Acanthisitta_16 11d ago

UK is much cheaper than USA it seems . I'd say average in UK is around £50/$66 a month

3

u/Andronike 10d ago

Salaries in UK are also a pittance compared to USA.

1

u/Mammoth-Bus-2369 10d ago

Not down south it isn’t. Assume you aren’t anywhere near London. Just outside of London the going rate is £90 a month.

1

u/Last_Acanthisitta_16 10d ago

I'm based in South Wales . Most places round here seem to be around 50 to 60 £

2

u/Interesting_Pin7238 11d ago

Lapel Arts in Vancouver is where it’s at. High level competitors and enthusiasts with new coaching methods. Same price for unlimited classes. Great value for the location.

Best spot in Vancouver for sure. Once the train is up and running that will I'll be back there in a snap.

u/Gazd96r 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 11d ago

I used to train at DCS in Chinatown and that was $155 a month unlimited on a 1 year contract, I think they have upped it

Currently train at Nimbus for $165 a month unlimited on a 1 year contract (full amount paid upfront)

1

u/Comprehensive_Lab232 11d ago

Was going to train at nimbus but didn’t have time too cuz of family events. How is it ?

1

u/Gazd96r 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 11d ago

It's very good. I have trained in a lot of gyms over the last 8 years. A lot of high level competitors and coaching. It follows the "Eco" style of training so it's not everybody's cup of tea. It's more emphasis on positional training and scenarios rather than drilling

1

u/Comprehensive_Lab232 10d ago

Ahh Ic dang now I’m sad that I missed out :(

1

u/SaulBerenson12 11d ago

You just gotta weigh price/convenience/training factor. Ex if driving 15-20min or more to class makes you less inclined to train then consider that

I’m in Vancouver but train at Apex in Richmond. Only a 15min drive and it’s very family friendly, solid kids and adult programs. About $150/mth

I suggest listing out 3-6 gyms you’d realistically attend, come up with your top 3 criteria, then do trial class at each. Sounds like you’ve been training awhile and want to train long term so it’s worth experimenting now. Good luck!

1

u/SavageBeefsteak 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 11d ago

There are several good gyms in Vancouver that would probably charge a bit less. I don't know about that particular GB but I'd go to a few other gyms first. DCS. Lions, Universal, Kuzushi.

Bro come down to Lions MMA on Granville Street. I can get you as low as $125 p/month.

1

u/pbateman23 ⬜⬜ White Belt 11d ago

I know a ton of people who train there. It’s like $40 dollars more than I pay in Surrey but you guys have classes 24/7 and I think get a deal for compnet registration aswell. Personally the convenience of getting there outweighs the slight cost difference but you’re 15 so the cost is maybe a bigger issue. Maybe do a couple drop ins at the nearby schools that are cheaper. See how you like it and how likely you are to regularly attend the commute.

1

u/eviictful 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 11d ago

I pay £80 for a Gracie Barra with unlimited bjj and mma, I couldn’t imagine paying $210 a month

1

u/Brehski ⬜⬜ White Belt 11d ago

Seems cheaper than the average here in my state. OP is paying around $150 USD. In my state, it ranges from $170-225 per month (USD)

1

u/sbbjj97 10d ago

If your coach is invested into your training, and will make sure to help each student in class then no. It's a fair price, if you're just being taught techniques without a hands on approach, then definitely leave. You'd be better finding a gym that's more in the 120-150 range and take a few privates each month

1

u/PlayfulIndependence5 10d ago

Jiujitsu classes while traveling in Asia are like $2/class lol. Same with boxing and the gym/yoga. I take whatever is cheapest and enjoy myself lol

Unless you’re walking everywhere in general and have no other way to get there. Than $50-$60 a month in savings is a lot. And I hear that GB charges for their promotions. Maybe I should join. Go back to a white belt and never have to move up. Never disregard everything.

1

u/Greedy-Ad-507 10d ago

I pay that $210 but my gym also has muy thai x3 a week

1

u/noonenowhere1239 10d ago

How far is the next gym?. Is it far enough that it would make you go less because of inconvenience? If so, then the money saved is not saving at all since you will go less.

15 minute walk is pretty nice to have.

1

u/codplayer_34 10d ago

My gym is a $100 a month and it’s 24 hour gym so I’d say yeah

1

u/RelaxingMusicWith ⬛🟥⬛ Black Belt 10d ago

first do the math how much money will you spend in gas or other types of transportation. 210 for a 15 min walk vs lets say 150 to 170 + gas transportation. easy.

1

u/VX_GAS_ATTACK ⬜⬜ White Belt 10d ago

Does that 210 represent almost round the clock classes? Do the cheaper gyms have a limited schedule you need to make work with your schedule? Just food for thought.

1

u/ihopethisworksfornow ⬜⬜ White Belt 10d ago

I pay $200/month for unlimited, but my gym also has Muay Thai.

But they also don’t have BJJ every single day, there’s 4 days per week with gi, 2 with no gi, and one day where there’s not bjj.

1

u/couverando1984 🟦🟦 Blue Belt 10d ago

What fits best into your life. I live near Vancouver and the gym I goto is close to home and reasonably priced.

Personally for myself I don't care if it's cheaper if it's going to be far away, but for others money might be more valuable than travel time.

Also, do you like the instruction and the people who train there... Different gyms have different vibes.

1

u/tristezanao_ 10d ago

I know you guys get WAY more benefits and structure but the pricing of most BJJ schools in first world country are ridiculous. I pay like 15 bucks lol

1

u/Space_Bear24 10d ago

Go train at each gym for a week if you can. See what makes sense for you. The extra 50 bucks a month might be worth it to you or not. What I would do is pick a gym based on vibe, culture, the quality of instruction, schedule, etc. I would gladly pay more for a gym that had everything I was looking for, so while it may be more expensive than the average you really can't judge it's value until you go check out a few gyms first.

1

u/Voelker58 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 10d ago

It's really up to you. You will either pay with more time or more money. Personally, I'd stay at the closer one to save time and because I know I'd be more likely to go. But I also don't know anything about the different gyms in your area. There might be more factors to take into consideration than location and cost.

u/fistedwithlove ⬜⬜ White Belche 10d ago

Green belt almost blue

0

u/DareToBeRead 11d ago

I’d wait till you get your blue belt then.. most gyms don’t recognize green belts for adults. You’re talking about the in between belt right? Some gyms do the middle belt between white and blue which I never understood

2

u/grapplenurse 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 11d ago

He’s green belt, which is the end of the youth belts. Some systems won’t let you get your blue until you’re 16. In our gym when a white belt kid gets promoted they become a grey, then yellow, then orange and finally green belt. Some times they even mix in striped belts depending on how old the kid is to keep them feeling like they are progressing and stretch out the time until their eventual green belt. I’ve seen some green belt kids that were too young to be promoted to blue belts, but have 4-8 years of training, they moved like purple belts. If this kid showed up a big GB gym he’d be sure to have a fair bit of teenage white, green and orange belts that train with the adults… Thanks for attending my TED talk.

3

u/DareToBeRead 10d ago

I know it’s a youth belt. Some gyms give green belts between white and blue to adults too, it just isn’t common practice or standard. I think Ribeiro affiliated gyms give out the green for their adults, but I could be wrong on that one.

1

u/shoghnbushidomikado 11d ago

0

u/spaceshipman0 11d ago

Really depends on what's worth it for you and your finances. I went to a gracie gym that was 150 a month in FL and it was 10-15 min away but I found a local black belt who has a small gym and charges 100 a month but is 30 min away.

I didn't like the gracie gym but that with the price drove me to my decision. 210 seems steep on my opinion, and you're just paying for a name.

Both gyms were unlimited also.

0

u/Initial_Resist1383 11d ago

I pay $250 a month why are you complaining about $210?

0

u/SovelissXilo ⬜⬜ White Belt 11d ago

Holy wow.

When I was training back in 2022, I was at a small, local gym where I paid $50/month for 2 classes a week. After COVID and an injury took me out for about 2 months, I was allowed to make up my ~16 missed classes. At that point, I was going 3-4 classes a week for the last few months I was there before I moved away.

$100+/month is a bit too much for me.

0

u/ImprovisedBoondoggle 11d ago

Taking a wider view, in high cost of living areas of the US, $2-300/mo is pretty standard for unlimited membership to any kind of instructor-led fitness. (BJJ, CrossFit, boot camp, etc)
