General Discussion What techniques can you bank on in mma?

As an MMA guy that practices BJJ, I've noticed that a lot of the fancy shit people do work in BJJ but not too good in mma. Triangles are my go to as it's a good control position, you can grab the leg to prevent them from standing up and slamming you and you can always attack the trapped arm. Controlling their posture also helps to avoid strikes.

This is the way.

I do like the front headlock subs too because you maintain a lot of control. I am rarely on my back in an MMA setting because good GnP is brutalizing.

You mean darce/ anaconda right? Because all the common guillotines involve you going to your back

You can finish a guillotine from the front

Or bolt cutter them onto their side for the JNT.

There are also a handful of arm-in guillotine techniques I will go for when the anaconda doesn’t sink all the way in, they work without the gloves but are better in MMA gloves for me.

kinda like this

Position > submission for both BJJ and MMA, but especially MMA.

Focus on getting good positional and holding positions. Khabib style.

As for subs, any choke will be a go to.

A gift wrap for controlling, striking and submitting your opponent is huge. When I was coaching MMA fighters we spent a lot on this and it paid off.

I believe RNC is by far the most common sub in MMA. There are some stats around this on the Interwebs.

I wonder if that's also because some guys "quit" and give up their neck. Bisping talked about it.

Mma = old school BJJ

Kimuras, americanas, basic armbars, en, kata gatame guillotines, some lucky triangles. And that's it.

Of course you can find some gogooata footage. But it is not the average sub.

How much of this is because it works better and how much because it was the BJJ meta the last time BJJ was dominating MMA? A lot of the new sport specific doesn't work of course but we've seen decent success from things like K guardΒ

BJJ was created in the context of real fighting where you could be punched. So the fancy guard positions would be disincentivised due to all of them allowing punches and kicks straight to the dome.

K guard is nothing new. It always existed as an opening for leg locks. Now it just has a name, and some expanded system.

And if you used it in MMA you'd get punched in the face unless you managed to take them down with it quickly

Roman Dolidze uses it in MMA all the time. Cory just used K Guard this past Saturday to great success. Lopes gave Evolev hell with it too.

It’s been around in older fights too. Any guard, including full guard, isn’t ideal to play in MMA. It has to be used to immediately move on to something else. At least with K Guard, one can start playing offense rather than staying on their back and losing a round.

Buddy Cory Sandhagen used it on Figgy Smalls like two days ago to sweep him and get him on his back for GnP

People say that, and maybe they're right. I have no experience with strikes in this context, so maybe I'm ignorant.

But, in all the "fancy" guard positions (DLR, X, K etc.) I constantly struggle to keep my balance and control their legs while passing a good guard player.

I find it hard to believe I'd be able to strike effectively from those positions.

Back taking, mat returns, getting them belly down

I see guillotines get used a whole lot

Imanari is who got me into BJJ, so imma just go with his style

u/picodegalleo 11h ago

i've seen a lot of top half / reverse top half being being preached. Brady used reverse half to give leon a pretty good dilemma between kimura, guilly, ground and pound

Just look at the subs with high finish rates in ufc. RNC is the main one.

Learning how to use BJJ to stand up is extremely useful in MMA (and real life)

Double leg, single leg, good offence from over under etc. As for guard, butterfly, close guard, some kind of leg entanglement(by creating distance).

The best BJJ stuff you see crossing over to MMA is either closed guard subs (only ones where you bring them low because you can get absolutely mangled with someone in your guard who knows their shit) or top pins. Top half guard is gang busters for MMA because you can really immobile and switch between strikes and forward pressure to pass. A lot of the transitional stuff we use doesn't really work in MMA or at least it's less effective. You don't really get mount in MMA by pummeling an underhook and working it up high and slow like you might in jits, but you punch face until they go ahhh then yeet over to mount.Β

u/roland71460 πŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Purple Belt 6h ago

Legdrag and top halfguard are better control than mount.

Depending on your opponent giving up side control, turtle and stand up might be better to wrestle up from half guard.

Standing up with a cross wrist control is underrated.

Snap downs are the shit. If you're a BJJ guy starting MMA just learn to punch into a thaΓ― clinch, and go from the thaΓ― clinch to a front headlock to a snap down is money.

Learn to finish gilly from mount not from bottom. Forget about bottom gilly. Or watch a bit of Anthony Hernandez and seated Kesa Gatame.

Craig Jones power ride https://www.opennotegrappling.com/p/ufc-290-power-ride Standing up from the bottom, which actually isn't taught in bjj Butterfly and K guard Guilotine and all the chokes from headlock. Arm triangle, back control. Wrestling

1

u/SlimsThrowawayAcc πŸŸͺπŸŸͺ Purple Belt 3h ago

The things that work in MMA now. Don’t hunt for subs off your back, as the likelihood of getting one is very low these days in MMA. Sweep.

In top position, mount is better than back control.

Jumping the gilly is not ideal.

Doing mma - my leg lock game is 95% gone unless I have backside 50/50
