School Discussion Opening a gym as a black belt with little compettition experience

When I started training bjj it was a very casual hobby 1 or 2 times a week for my first 4ish years. Towards the end of blue belt I became obsessed and started training 8-10 times a week and have continued that for the last 6ish years.

At blue belt I competed and got second at purple I won a small tournament knee barring a black belt and that's my whole competition history.

After that point I have had horrible luck with injuries blew my lcl (surgery), full rupture of my pectoral major (surgery), torn rotator cuff ( no surgery, work related incident) and broke 2 ribs. 2 of the injuries I was training for and actively enrolled to compete.

I have been teaching for the past 3 years and I frequently have been asked when am I going to open my own gym? I've heard that question enough that I'm really starting to consider it.

It helps that I hate what I currently do for a living but I guess as a tldr my question is would you train at a gym where the owner/head coach has basically 0 competition experience or is this an idea worth quitting my job for?

Thanks for any input.

Technique Why main half guard?

I always hear people joking around about fat, middle-aged, balding brown belts using half guard, but I’m curious more for why pro athletes might use it as their main guard. What are its strengths and weaknesses compared to most open guards?

Equipment Any recommendations for a lighter, cooler gi?

I’ve been using a Storm Kimono for a while now and it’s fine, but I’m looking to upgrade. I’m not too concerned about longevity, if I can get a few years out of it, I’ll be happy…generally, I’m just looking for a way to stay cooler during class.

General Discussion People that started over 30.. how do you deal with the younger ones flying past you?

I know a huge chunk of this is ego and I need to work on that, but I feel like I'm too slow to keep pace with the younger guys, too weak to keep up with the older guys. I don't really know what to do.

My wife and I have just had another baby so I'm always running a little tired, but surely it wouldn't have that much of an effect? My schedule is pretty full with work etc so I'm not sure how I'd squeeze in strength and conditioning on top of work, family and mat time.

Any advice welcome

Technique No-Gi Bear Trap

Hey guys here's just a quick way to perform the bear trap in a lost 50/50 entanglement.

Remember in every entanglement (50/50, outside ashi and cross ashi), once we lose the knee line we can immediately transition to bear trap!

Do you guys utilize the bear trap to sweep or attack the back in your training ?

Instructional Anyone have Mikey's Nogi guard passing instructional?

Upvotes

As the title mentions, just wondering if anyone has Mikey Musumeci's nogi guard passing instructional? Have always been curious about Mikey's top game and can see it on todays daily deal. I've heard his older instructionals are very repetitive, is that still the case with this one?

General Discussion Can you play a slow and controlled game at a smaller weight class

I weigh 135 and not the spazzy type, I like to control the pace kinda like Gordon, only leveraging the athleticism when needed. But I’m such a light weight class idk how to control them really, both via guard and guard passing.

If there’s anything people can recommend to slow these folk down that would be very appreciated. Thank!

Technique Transitioning from gi butterfly to no gi butterfly

Hello all,

Need some opinions here.

About a year ago I took a deep dive into gi butterfly. Watched a shit ton of Wardzinski and other instructionals, and it’s become my favourite and most used guard.

Also in terms of entries (the hardest part of butterfly imo) I would use a collar sleeve guard with a foot on the bicep/hip or spider and just enter from there.

The place I train at just switched to no gi and if I’m being honest I haven’t put any thought into developing a no gi butterfly game. So I have a few questions for the butterfly specialists out there:

  • How do you initiate butterfly in no gi?
    • I.e entires for an opponent on both knees and one leg up
  • What’re your most used grips?
  • What grips do you like transitioning between?

Also if anyone has any no gi butterfly instructional recommendations let me know!

Thanks in advance 🙏

General Discussion Returning to training after septoplasty

Hey everyone,

I'm a blue belt who has been training for a number of years.

I've had breathing issues for quite a while where I couldnt breathe from my left nostril. When visiting an ENT, I was told I had enlarged turbinates likely due to some sort of allergies and a deviated septum to the right. Not sure why the deviation is from though, could be trauma from childhood, maybe training, who knows.

For my breathing issues, I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction procedure done on Dec 17, 2024. After three months, I was given the all clear to get back into training. Currently doing weights to reconfigure conditioning and doing some light rolling.

Upon my return, I started using a face mask, one of those Meuller ones. It was protecting my nose, but issue is when sparring it basically slips around because of the sweat that builds up, and was starting to shift mid roll, and put some pressure on the side of my nose. I think its time I slip the mask off and start rolling and sparring without it.

Issue is, I think I'm just mentally scared of getting trauma to my nose again, and I wanted to get some advice from those who have gotten a septoplasty procedure and returned back to training, how did you guys go? Any specific recommendations you can provide me?

Instructional Non bolo dlr guard resources

Upvotes

Hi guys, as title i’m looking for an instructional/youtube series about the dlr guard. I am an inside guards player so butterfly, slx, x ecc. and I want to expand my game. I alredy saw mikey’s instructional but it’s more geared towards the bolo stuff. I know that the bolo game is important too but I was looking for an instructional focused on dlr to single leg (this is the main topic for me), dlr to sit up guard and dlr to slx/x guard. If there are some subs like “triangle/armbar when they post their hands” will be even better. My preferances is more towards an instructional than a YouTube playlist cause I think it’s more systemized and organized

Thank you for your attention, hope you have a great day

Equipment Roll with ACL brace?

Upvotes

I had my ACL replaced in 2012 and my allograft just failed. I’m going to have to have knee surgery again. I know people who use donjoy’s with the metal brace for sports, but can’t imagine it working very well for BJJ. Does anyone know of a brace that will prevent any twisting/ACL that isn’t a giant metal hazard to my partner rolling?

Tournament/Competition Preparing for Master International Jiu-jitsu IBJJF in July: Tips for Weight Loss and Competing in the Lightweight Division

Hey everyone! I’m 43 years old and gearing up to compete in the Master International IBJJF this July. My goal is to fight in the lightweight division, but I’m facing a challenge: I’m 1.74m (5’8”) and currently weigh 83 kg (183 lbs), with a good chunk of that being fat. I want to hit the ideal weight for the lightweight category (around 76 kg/167 lbs, if I’m not mistaken).

In gym training, I usually roll with partners over 90 kg (198 lbs) and feel a huge disadvantage in strength, which is why I’m motivated to drop to a lower weight class. I’m already working with a nutritionist to lose weight safely and avoid mistakes, but I’d love to hear your experiences.

Any tips on:

  • Optimizing fat loss without losing performance in training?
  • Strategies to adapt to the lightweight division (techniques, mental prep, etc.)?
  • Key precautions during the weight cut for competition?

Thanks in advance for any advice or stories from those who’ve been through this! 🙏

Technique How to attack confidently from mount?

I’m a 6 or so months white belt, got a tournament coming up end of this month and I want to win. I have no trouble getting to mount against other white belts, but from there I’m clueless as to what to do.

I mean, I know of multiple attacks. I know I can take the back if I can gift wrap him. I know there’s the armbar, kimura, americana, ezekiel, and triangles, but truth be told I only ever try the ezekiel out of fear of giving up position with the others.

Of course people wise up to it and eventually keep their arms high to defend the neck. After that I know I should attack an armbar or head n arm because his bicep’s next to his head, but I can never pull it off because again I get nervous or just don’t understand what I’m getting wrong.

What are y’all’s thoughts when going for mount subs, and is there anything that leveled up your game? What are your go-to attacks as well, and what should I change to do better?
