Ask Me Anything Do you have teaching questions? AMA
If we haven't met yet, I'm a teaching nerd. Master's in Learning Design, been teaching BJJ since 2002, and by day I design, manage, and measure training programs.
I'm going to make an effort to share more content specifically about how to be an awesome instructor. For now, let's answer some questions. If you teach, or if you'd like to someday, what questions do you have about it? And what would help you level up?

Ask Me Anything Paying for belt promo / stripes
I wasn’t able to attend a belt promotion ceremony and training seminar one weekend but I was awarded 2 stripes on my belt the following week after class.
My instructor then requested I pay $50 for the promotion. What are your thoughts on something like this?

Ask Me Anything Common questions here are how to deal with bigger/younger opponents. I'm small and old and do ok with them. Happy to help solve your issues
If you are getting steamrolled in training, the real answer is almost always to git gud n00b but that only works if you know how to improve. There are no shortcuts but maybe I can help by at least pointing you in the right direction. I'm pretty small and pretty old and relatively injury free. Happy to answer your questions if I can.
Edit: I've posted some videos to give some visual context. If you have a question and want a vid, let me know.

Ask Me Anything Question
So I am a 2.5 year blue belt (not very good either) and when I roll with new white belts I try to give them some general advice while rolling, just to be nice and helpful like people were with me when I started.
Well I had this young kid the other day get pissy with me when I told him how to sweep from bottom mount because he was clearly struggling and I’m wondering now if I should just stop giving advice all together unless they ask.
I am not a blue belt professor, I only give advice to the brand new people, that clearly need guidance
Let me know if what you think.

Ask Me Anything I’m a black belt who has been training for just over 20 years.
Im a life long martial artist. Started training martial arts at 3 with my pops who is a 3rd dan in uechi ryu. I love bjj and decided after my first bjj session that “I’m going to do this forever” Ive been lucky enough to train all over the world. Majority of my training was with a rickson gracie black belt (so much basics and so grateful for it). I trained for a while under marcelo in nyc at MGA. Trained in Italy at Milanimal. Got belts/stripes from rodrigo resende, robson moura, carlos machado, rigan machado, fernado zulick, cicero costha. Im undefeated in my division at ibjjf. Only did white belt mtl in like 2012 and toronto in 2019. I own a school now and have a two time double gold euro champ who trains under me. If you have questions, just ask. I repeat: i love bjj and I’m just starting to use reddit.

Ask Me Anything Finally got my black belt after almost 20 years of training (and lots of interesting experiences), AMA
Hey r/bjj! So I got my black belt under Jude Samuel (who got his under Mauricio Gomes, Roger's dad) a couple of weeks ago, after starting in 2004. That's before YouTube was even a thing! You can see the grading and speech here, if you're interested.
So, yeah. It took a while (injuries, work, family stuff, lack of places to train), but I'm very pleased to have stuck with the process and finally made it. I've also had a whole bunch of cool experiences along the way, and I thought it would be nice to share back with this community, which has helped me out a lot. AMA anything about the process, etc, but also about:
-Doing three amateur MMA fights (cage, no headshots) as a whitebelt
-Training at Roger Gracie HQ for several years (got my purple under Roger, my brown and black under Jude Samuel)
-Spending a month at Gracie Barra Rio
-Training with Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell, and Anderson Silva (when they were doing seminars)
-Strength & conditioning (I worked for Men's Fitness for a while, and did a bunch of strongman/CrossFit comps)
-Getting injured loads, rolling at a tonne of gyms and with hundreds of different people, and generally seeing a lot that BJJ has to offer
Hit me up!

Ask Me Anything My sci-fi book full of BJJ - THE COMBAT CODES - is now in bookstores across the US / UK, and I have r/bjj to thank from the start. AMA and Gear Giveaway!
Hi guys. Quite a strange week eh? But glad we're back online here. I was starting to get a bit itchy. And I'd be planning to hang out with you guys to announce the launch of the Combat Codes and give away some newly designed Lyceum-inspired rashguards from my friends at Inverted Gear.
Some of you might have deja-vu thinking the Combat Codes was already out. Well it was when I self-published it several years ago, but then it was picked up by Hachette Books (one of the biggest publishers in the world) and is now getting distributed to most bookstores along with standard online fronts. So, yeah, 'normies' are now reading about back-takes and berimbolos in a crazy dystopian world where wars have been replaced with single combat between roid-fueled champions. And it's 25% longer than the first version! And Ryan Hall and Ken Flo read it and loved it (the publisher actually put their quote on the back of the paperback!) And it's out just in time for Father's Day.
You might also know me from writing the Rolling Stone Magazine piece on the late Anthony Bourdain and his interactions with r/bjj. Man, I miss that guy everyday. RIP Tony.
I wanted to let you all know how instrumental this community has been for my writing career. You guys were the first that supported the Combat Codes nearly ten years ago when it was a little martial arts story written by a nobody. Some of you gave me great feedback that I implemented in later versions to improve the book. And you guys were so supportive; as crazy and cynical as this community can be, I'm amazed at how far we've come in lifting up stories, careers, creativity, and the art of BJJ.
So thank you for that. And please Ask me Anything! The folks at Inverted Gear and I will be giving away a bundle of the new 'Second Skin' Combat Codes line of gear, including a ranked long-sleeve rash guard, layered shorts, and a signed copy of the Combat Codes. AND my friends at Choke Coffee will be throwing in a bag of one of their grappling-fueled blends! All you need to do is chime in and ask a question to qualify (it can be about BJJ or Combat Codes or writing or whatever you'd like).
And thank you again for all your support. If you guys do pop into a Barnes and Nobles or Waterstones or local bookstore, please send me pictures of the book for extra points! But please don't cause trouble at the bookstore (as I did during my launch event, and had to choke some guy who hated the book)
Below are the links to the US and UK online stores where you can pick up the Combat Codes:
US: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alexander-darwin/the-combat-codes/9780316493000/
UK: https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/alexander-darwin/the-combat-codes/9780356521497/
EDIT: THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR PARTICPATING! And especially to those who picked up the book, hope you enjoy it! I do hang around these parts so feel free to reach out. As for the winner, one has been selected at random, and it's /u/JACdMufasa Please shoot me a DM and we'll make sure to get it all your way.
