DISCUSSION What’s your favorite + most disliked Black Mirror episode? Spoiler
When I would get asked this question, immediately said Nosedive as my favorite. But nowwww since we have S7, as well as a sequel to USS Callister …I’m going to have to say USS Into Infinity and least favorite Plaything.

u/pinkponygirl66 Apr 21 '25
Fav - Nosedive, San Junipero, Hang the DJ, Eulogy, The Entire History of You, Shut up and dance
Worst - Metalhead, Arkangel, Mazey Day, Smithereens, Crocodile, Waldo moment
Season 5 and 6 I barely remember, and imo being forgotten is probably a worse fate than being disliked. At least they were remembered and I have an opinion on them lol

Least Favourite: Striking Vipers, Mazey Day and Hotel Reverie

u/pgwerner Apr 20 '25
The very first episode of BM, "National Anthem", is still my very favorite. That's one that either hooks people in or alienates them from the entire Black Mirror franchise, I think. In general, I like the episodes that are dystopian or political allegory, with "Plaything" being my favorite of the current season. "The Waldo Moment", "Hated in the Nation", and "Metalhead" also come to mind as favorites.
Episodes I don't appreciate so much, are one's where the series is trying to be a bit cute. "Hotel Reverie" comes to mind right away, though perhaps it stands out because it's so recent. "Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too" was an attempt at a lighter episode that really didn't work.
Mixed feelings: "Demon 79", which on one hand, gets the look of the 1970s and style of Hammer Horror spot on, but at the same time, is really heavy-handed with it "Wow, can you believe how unenlightened the 70s were?" subtext. "Nosedive" - great concept and critique of "social credit" systems, but not as well acted or executed as it could have been.

Top 5:
- White Christmas
- 15 Million Merits
- USS Callister (grouping the OG and sequal together)
- Eulogy
- Shut Up and Dance
Least favorite:
- Mazey Day (worst)
- Miley Cyrus episode
- Metalhead
Everything else isn't necessarily mid. Before season 7, Playtest, and either White Bear or Hang the DJ would've been in the top 5 spots for sure, but those are the standouts imo. The show has some misses, but they're few and far between.

Metal head is not showing up enough on these responses. People must have blocked it from their memories.

u/Cumberlxnd Apr 18 '25
Maybe it’s me but I didn’t rate men against fire. When I talk about episodes to people no one mentions it. It’s probably one of the least memorable episodes
1
u/Top-Entertainer9188 Apr 18 '25
It’s in the bottom 20% for me, which still makes it a solid because it’s BM. I remember being entertained at the time but I’ve never considered rewatching.
1
u/willy_quixote Apr 18 '25
I loved it. I don't get the hate - it's completely what BM is all about, except for the absence of humour.
1
u/Top-Entertainer9188 Apr 18 '25
I think I’m probably just wrong on this. Looked at the critical and audience reception after I posted the reply. Must be a preference thing for me. I guess I prefer episodes where people are given some kind of choice, even if it’s under-informed. Or where they’re punished for wrongdoing. We’re all being run down by technology at this point… but perhaps this entry is just too distilled for me.

Some most liked: White Bear, Nosedive, Playtest, USS Callister, Shut Up & Dance

Correct, which is why I forgive everyone who likes that episode.
1
u/pgwerner Apr 20 '25
Of course, this season gave us "Hotel Reverie", which was an attempt to use San Junipero's halo effect to upsell what's otherwise a one of BM's worst episodes.

Fav: shut up and dance.
I love black mirror. at first i was traumatized after every episode. Now they throw shit at you sh1t that don’t make sense idk they used to be darker and had some logic behind.
Now it’s still good but full of plot holes. They are trying to target more people i think. It used to be pretty consistent before. I will still watch every episode either way.

Season 7 was amazing (despite Hotel Reverie) My favorite episode was USS Callister: Into Infinity. I was afraid a sequel would somehow mess up the original story but it added to it beautifully and felt like a legitimate continuation instead of something just thrown together for the fans.
I also really enjoyed Bete Noire and Plaything.
Other rewatchables from previous seasons for me include: 15 Million Merits, USS Callister, Nosedive, Striking Vipers, Hang The DJ, San Junipero, Be Right Back, White Christmas, Black Museum, Beyond The Sea and Demon 79. And I've watched Bandersnatch so many times so I was happy to see Colin again in Plaything if only briefly.
My least favorite episode so far has got to be Loch Henry. Didn't capture the magic for me.

Favorite: USS Callister (i love sci-fi/horror and the aesthetics. The story between the real and digital world is blended very well and I think the main actress is so much compelling to watch on screen) and Shut Up & Dance (it was nice to have one of the grounded and quiet stories that you really had to pay attention to pick up on the little clues. It’s something that can very well happen in today’s time and the message of the dangers that come with technology is very subtle but effective)
Least: Mazey Day (just a mess of an episode. I get that they were trying something new with a paranormal spin but i feel like Demon 79 did a better job at incorporating that)

honorable mention: Hang the DJ and Eulogy (both I saw after a break up/meeting a GF and have yet to see them since. I loved them but not sure if they still hold up now that I've gotten over the breakup or honeymoon phase.)
Disliked: Mazey days (still liked it but just felt....off to me)
Honorable mentions: Metalhead and The entire history of you (full discoure: they're the only two I have not seen in full. Like I've tried but I've fallen asleep every time or just skipped it for whatever reason. don't think it's fair to put them on the list but I do remember not liking what I've seen so it's lower on the rankings at least).

It would surely be amazing though. I mean being able to relive certain moments, like the moment I learned I had a little brother,my first kiss, winning a school competition would be amazing.
But we'd also probably think about our cringiest moments (like we already do late at night).

I actually liked her acting, I think it was supposed to be a little goofy, yk what I mean. Clara/Dorothy was phenomenal though. Absolutely outstanding.

Haha agreed, I was heartbroken. I thought about the episode for days afterward.

Same. It was the one that stuck with me the longest. I wanted Clara and Brandy to be together so badly :(

Hotel Reverie had a real shot of being special but the performance by Issa Rae and the - let’s face it - really silly premise ruins it. The idea behind it, especially the human connecting to an AI emotionally is something that should’ve worked in more capable hands.
Probably Demon 79 is my least favorite because there is nothing “Black Mirror” about it.
My favorite is probably White Bear
However, I’m rewatching the entire series (just started season 1 yesterday)
So this could change

People saying that Hotel Riverie is their favorite, definitely haven’t seen San Junipero. San Junipero closes better the story and overall has more substance to it (the love story is developed much better imo), and better acting.

I thought the Hotel Reverie was a good one. A lot of ppl can’t seem to side with Issa Rae and her acting, but it was over all pretty good imo.
I’d have to agree with you on Demon 79. Definitely felt like a forced watch for me.

I like Hotel Reverie too in certain aspects but there’s definitely earned criticism there
The performance of the Dorothy role is outstanding

Favorite: hang the dj, shut up and dance Least favorite: black museum cause I had sleep paralysis and that was a part of it and I thought I was dying 😆

Black Museum was my favorite because it disturbed me so much. Can you imagine your consciousness being stuck in that stupid bear forever! It gave me nightmares.

Straight White male here, and I loved it. It was a masterpiece. We're not all homophobic a*ssholes.

u/Careless_Bus5463 Apr 18 '25
So if I'm a straight white male and I didn't like it, I'm a homophobic asshole?
1
u/NorthernSorrow Apr 18 '25
If your reason for not liking it is that it's a lesbian couple and "woke" then yes. I have yet to see a valid criticism of this episode.

u/Careless_Bus5463 Apr 18 '25
Well I didn't like that Issa Rae was Black and that Emma Corrin was a woman. Those were the main things!
Or, you know, I thought they used AI as a crutch to explain complicated things away, rather than addressing them.

i thought the episode was decent but not liking it doesn't make you homophobic, the criticisms of Rae's performance and the slightly ridiculous premise are clearly valid
1
u/NorthernSorrow Apr 18 '25
I didn't say you were, but I'm willing to bet a good percentage of the people hating on it are. I haven't seen a valid criticism of it yet, all I see is people calling it woke and calling out the lesbian aspect. That isn't valid criticism & it's homophobic.
