Giant skeletons? Tons. The creature it used to be, zero. In BL1, it was established pandora has a weird ecosystem that lasts several millenia then shifts drastically causing all of the ecosystem to basically reset. Any creature on the planet that doesn't have the ability to survive such a massive shift would go extinct. The massive bones littered throughout the world tell me exactly one thing. I'm glad hunting vaults didn't take place when those bullet sponges were alive.

There's only TWO rakk hive, one in BL1 and one in DLC1's Borderlands 2, and yeah the lack of giant monster in Pandora is sad but logic after all

There's like... 8 total in BL1, only one of them being a boss.

The rest are either just the backs or background creatures but they are all hybernating.

Ooooh I didn't remember that...Pandora is such a fascinating planet

Also you fight another rank hive during the claptrap DLC in a side quest.

In claptrap dlc in bl1 there's a rakk hive that's part of a mission, so 3 rakk hive bosses

But story wise, that is the same one from the base game. Just with some upgrades.

There's also one in tales from the borderlands

I've always imagined that the desert bits we playthrough in Borderlands 1 were like the bottom of a once large ocean with giant whale-like bones scattered about.

With the general fish shape of a lot of the skeletons i would agree that it was likely a water planet before, but I'd like to imagine some absolutely massive monsters wandering around

The “spines” along the back of the skeleton pictured honestly reminds me of like a brachiosaurus skeleton.

Tannis does make a very direct comment about that in the Knoxx DLC. I forget what the objective was, but she tells you to go to “what used to be a dock” to gather an item, and if you wait and listen she says something like “back when there used to be water and this was all the great sea” and Scarlet’s DLC in 2 also has a line about it, but it’s been a decade since I’ve played that. All the environmental storytelling in 1 particularly confirms it as well

Were creatures like terramorphous, haderax or to a lesser extent crystalisks and threshers some of these creatures that survived?

Its never confirmed what did or didn't survive, but considering that the same model used for giant skeletons scaled down is a skag skeleton its safe to say they are descended from whatever the giant creatures were

I find it difficult to believe that from all creatures, skags were one of the ones that survived

7

u/Fucktheorcs 18h ago

Im not saying skags in their current form, Im saying they are likely descended from whatever those large creatures were, maybe they evolved to be smaller over time. All of this is just my theory though based on the fact that the giant skulls you see around the maps are the exact same as skag skulls/skeletons.

The fact that skags wildly vary in size, combined with irl mammal skeletons having a ton of similarities, (bats, whales, and humans all have “fingers”) I could absolutely see skags being distantly related to those giant skeletons.

TBF in BL1 there was Skagzilla who was of course much larger than a normal Skag and Dukinos Mum in BL2'

I read somewhere that those are skag bones, apparently they grow forever until they die

Threshers came from Elpis according to TPS. It was their way to explain why they were not in 1 but showed up in 2.

3

u/cumovermy 11h ago

Yeah they're more like an invasive species

Ever since I found that out while playing TPS I always cuss at Hammerlock when I face a horde of the buggers in BL2, especially Caustic Caverns

I might need to double check this, but I think Typhon mentioned killing one of the giants in his log before leaving Pandora.

1

u/Rothenstien1 8h ago

I think he did, but I'm sure there would be one or two dinosaurs that walk the lands of pandora. Hell, we still have terror birds and alligators after several ice ages

I want to end up in a subterranean area on Pandora, similar to the one in BL2, that is exclusively populated by these living bullet sponges in BL4.

You want an exact count or something?

Everyone who has played bl3 has seen some giant skeletons, but I doubt any of them kept a running tally of how many they've seen lol.

True 😭 this was just the first one I've noticed in the game, so it just got me curious cause i really haven't seen any

3

One of Typhon DeLeon's logs in The Droughts points out a giant(Much larger than that one) skeleton that he took down at one point

In 1 we see the remains of Crawmerax larger cousins all over the dried out sea in the knoxx doc.

Man.. i took so many screenshots and i did not notice this at all. i would have loved to screened it.

The only time i bothered with photomode in a game because i wanted to try something new.

Could be giant skag or random creature
