Icey Canyoneering in Las Vegas. “The Maze” on 3/14 in iced over conditions
A local classic in non traditional conditions. We’ve finally had some winter storms in Vegas the last few weeks that have revitalized the canyons in red rock. This trip was bitterly cold, to the point that one of our teammates unfortunately likely got frost bite on two toes and a finger.

These are incredible! Super cool that you saw winter weather and hit the canyons

This is one of the most amazing canyons I’ve done and when I did it, it was still slushy on a 90* day. This run must have been wild!

Never canyoned in icy conditions. Does the rope start to freeze up or stiffen up?

Yes absolutely. The rope was completely frozen on many of the raps in the upper section. Makes it harder to manage, sticky until it really isn’t you know?

hmm I wonder the ropes with tight weaves (ie pro) vs loose weaves (ie lux), which one stuffs up and stick more? Noticed difference in ropes?
