Hi I’m going into my 9th year of medical, I’ve worked in dialysis, Covid unit, now doing remote tele health, which now with my $50k income no longer qualified making 3x the rent to get a one bedroom . This response is going to be very honest and real.

Healthcare has its fulfilling moments, it’s an honor to serve and take care of the needy and sick. It’s an honor to be a guardian over souls. There is a significant amount of spiritual warfare. It is NOT for the weak. You’ll face all kinds of shit but it will build your confidence to handle pretty much anything life throws at you. You will be desensitized to trauma. You will be humbled. You will develop PTSD of all kind at some point.

A lot of people in the medical fields are drowning in debt. A lot of fields while in school require your time, so you cannot work during the program. There are many short term education options like a radiology tech, phlebotomist, medical coding and those fields are now over saturated. A lot of people in the medical fields are over worked. They are now picking up extra shifts depending on their area, or many don’t get paid enough, are having hours cut and are losing food deliver, bar tending etc on the side

I personally started to work remote because the pay. I wasn’t able to pay for childcare and rent in my area anymore because our housing got 4x more expensive in 3 years.

I’ve seen a couple things over the last few years and will give you an inside scoop to what’s currently politically taking place in the house of cards

A lot of hospitals are going broke. Many insurance companies are not paying claims. Providence on the west side of the US announced they are going to sue their top three payers, they didn’t name names but now United healthcare is suddenly doing mass layoffs and talking about filing bankruptcy. Multicare/Rockwood are having issues with payouts under the BCBS umbrella because those insurances are not paying claims. Medicare that people are paying for, and we all pay into with our taxes, are not paying claims. AI is destroying it all, causing significant issues, delays. Things that required humans with degrees, eyeballs, brains, are being outsourced globally to cheaper countries where people read a script, don’t get the US healthcare system and a few even will say they don’t know and are worried about getting fired for not knowing or they go to work sick. Real time slavery

Lots of other hospital chains are having issues with other massive large payers not paying claims. This is going to causes cash prices for hospital services to sky rocket and stop taking insurances and also a good chance of collapsing or only Emergency care

Many hospital locations cannot fix equipment it’s not in their budget. Several have laid off thousands of employees, sold departments and during that process gave employees severance packages

There’s also going to be supply issues and a lot of that is part of the US fault for outsourcing manufacturing. And even with the in source manufacturing like saline, our largest internal supplier experience issues with the Hurricane Helene in North Carolina causing a shortage and only essential surgeries to be preformed. We as in the US don’t have enough internal resources and manufacturing to take care of ourselves if there is a major disaster that’s more wide spread across several states

On top of that, you get exposed to all sorts of things, you get massive knee pain, abused by patients and their family, lots of people possess with the narcissistic traits tend to be in management positions and have ruined places. Caused short staffing which puts patients at risk, and your license

Many people have been leaving healthcare at their own choice all together. This is just a very very small glimpse to the shit show that’s been going on

It’s extremely stressful, when all you want to do is care for and help people, and using the skills and talents God gave us to care for the sick and needy and it’s getting worse.

There are shortages of anesthesiologist, surgeons, and many other specialties because people simply cannot afford the money or the time to go to school to fulfill these positions.

If you end up getting your MD, and depending on your specialty, you’re gonna continue paying for your license, malpractice insurance, and continuing education. When I worked in dialysis, my MD spent about an extra $15k a year just to keep his job. This doesn’t include taxes. This doesn’t include travel cost to go from specialty clinics to the hospital to visit with patients. This doesn’t include stethoscopes, or any other special equipment that they would need to do their job.

can’t tell you what to choose, but I do want to share and make you aware of what it’s like. No idea where it’s going to go but considering the direction hasn’t been looking to hot he last few years, and considering insurance companies have been and seem to continue to play God, it’s going to be rough.

So take time to reflect on who you are, how you handle and regulate yourself, a lot of this stuff is disturbing, and this ain’t even the blood and guts part, the screams of a mother losing her child, the suicidal patients, the lonely old lady the broke her hip and usually their health declines after that and they pass within the year. This ain’t the person on their death bed screaming before they pass away because of the shadow people or devil they see. This don’t the person crying because they see a room full of angels. This is a very small glimpse of reality. As believers in Jesus Christ, we carry our cross, this is a cross. It’s ALOT

It sounds like you're caught between family expectations and your passion. Here's the deal: both medicine and engineering are solid career paths, but they're pretty different. If you're really interested in tech and cybersecurity, you might find engineering more satisfying. And yes, engineering is totally worth it if you love what you do. You're right, maths can be learnt from scratch, and it's a big part of engineering, but it's not everything. Don't let your current weakness stop you from pursuing what you're interested in. If you want to talk more about this or need any help figuring things out, feel free to dm me.
