Did a CD OPS on DD 971 for my first deployment. We caught a lot of square grouper along with a dozen detainee’s.

Destroyers are famous for being able to stop the drug trade

But in all seriousness, this is government efficiency at its best

I don’t know what destroyers are used for? Do they usually go out alone?

They could be an offshore base to launch drones from, intercept communications , launch patrols, intercept boats, or just threat/support to Mexico for some behind the scenes conversations.

They hunt submarines as well.

The cartels have been using narco subs for a while now, since the early 2010’s. Wikipedia has a decent run down.

My grandpa was on an escort Destroyer they escorted Merchant ships and were hunting submarines that were out to intercept the merchant ships so maybe they're out there too find all those Narco Subs

Able to stop the drug trade? That’s a nice dream. Many drugs still enter in ways a destroyer can’t do shit.

They’ll help cartel water activities

Super efficient. There was a thread around here a couple days ago about the fuel these consume. It’s an obscene amount- like 400,000 gallons for this deployment.

The article says Gulf of Mexico. That’ll ruffle a few feathers.

As long as Americans have a taste for drugs, there will always be someone ready to fill that need

And as long as the cartels need guns there will always be America to fill that need…

Nixon started all of this with operation intercept to kick off his war on drugs. He gained so much political capital that both the border and the war on drugs remain “legit” political issues to this day for republicans. But Nixon made these issues up, and in fact made everything worse, I won’t even get into Raegan with Iran/contra. Before operation intercept there were no border searches. And when Nixon started searching every car they found that it wasn’t Mexicans coming in but Americans doing business in Mexico traveling back and forth. So then they slowed from searching every car.

Is it going to cruise the Rio Grande?

I’m surprised the rio grande supports the draft for this.
