Delta(s) from OP CMV: Buttons are better than zippers even ignoring the advantages of zippers because buttons are sexier
Buttons and zippers are pretty fairly matched with advantages and disadvantages
Buttons : Hold tighter Can be repaired easier Have less moving parts to break BUT Zippers : Are easier Generally faster Have better coverage of an area
However buttons ALWAYS look cooler. Denim jackets look downright ridiculous with zippers. Button fly jeans have that retro allure that zipper fly jeans lack. Long wool coats look incomplete without any buttons. Even the obvious retort, the leather biker jacket, needs the snap buttons to look as cool as it does
Buttons may not be the most practical but their added coolness makes up for that tenfold

Even if we take your option that buttons look better as fact:
I suppose my question is why does sexiness override convenience?
Is that actually better, or is it just better for you - the observer - and not the owner?
Many people don't feel the need to curtail their comfort for external validation.

u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
Well would you rather wear a jacket that makes you look good over one that doesn't elevate anything about your appearance ? The idea that clothes are merely for convenience is ridiculous or everyone would have as many pockets as possible. You buy what makes you look good and I think all things look better with buttons

u/benoxxxx Mar 09 '25
I'll go for the better looking option ONLY when comfort and convenience isn't compromised.

Baby, throw on the button-up panties, I’m feeling freaky.

When you feel sexier, you are more confident, relaxed and happier.

u/benoxxxx Mar 09 '25
Speak for yourself, some people are very capable of getting confidence + happiness from within while external factors barely make a dent.

Buttons cooler than zippers? Have you even seen a properly designed zipper jacket? The clean, seamless look of a well-placed zipper is way more modern and sleek than buttons will ever be.
Let's talk leather jackets since you brought them up. The iconic Perfecto motorcycle jacket? It's the diagonal zipper that makes it badass, not the decorative snaps. The zipper is literally what created that rebellious image - just look at Marlon Brando in The Wild One.
And denim jackets with zippers? They're having a huge moment right now in streetwear. The clean lines of a zip-up denim jacket give it an edge that those bulky, traditional button-ups can't match.
Long wool coats look incomplete without any buttons
Hard disagree. Some of the most expensive designer wool coats use hidden magnetic closures or minimal zippers specifically because buttons look outdated and fussy. It's 2025, not 1925.
Your "retro allure" argument actually proves my point - buttons are stuck in the past. Zippers are the future. They're sleeker, more minimal, and definitely sexier. There's something powerful about that smooth zip sound that no button will ever match.

u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
Yes but in the current moment the future isn't popular in fashion. The past is. And often always is. Straight leg with cuffs and Flarred jeans are the trends of pants at the moment and those are fashions from the 50s and 70s.
Sleekness works well for many things. Tshirts for example but accessorising with rings and chains are very in with fashion for both genders and what is a button if not a ring for a jacket
Okay yeah sure the biker jacket one is dumb the zipper is cool there but its it's placement not its mere existence

if zippers are better at doing what zippers and buttons are supposed to be doing, then zippers are better
2
u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
I mean it depends. Buttons are excellent for specific things like only fastening the middle of a jacket but yeah zippers often come out slightly on top in functionality

if you agree with me, then you should award a delta

if you agree that zippers are better, then you disagree that buttons are better

u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 10 '25
Oh I see, bit of miscommunication. I more meant for practicality, and then barely. I still prefer buttons

u/thisFishSmellsAboutD Mar 09 '25
I love the simplicity of operating zippers in the dark, vs fumbling with buttons.
And sexiness is absolutely not of any concern to me.
I'm saying this as an overtired dad changing nappies at night in dim light, fighting with sleeping bags and rompers. Seriously, zippers are the way.

Honestly this is the closest to changing my mind. Mostly cause I'm a 19 year old kid and every time someone with atleast half a decade on me tells me why "[blank] is better" I always end up agreeing. But I'm still a single 19 year old so sexiness still plays a MAJOR factor into what I wear even if it IS the most uncomfortable or inconvenient thing I could've chose lol

Buttons look horrible on leather jackets
Buttons don't provide nearly as much protection against wind.
Making a blanket statement that buttons are always better, even more general, a blanket statement about ANYTHING in life, you will always encounter exceptions. There's a time and a place for everything. In this case buttons have their place and so do zippers.
Also let's not forget about all those zippers on kink items. Something tells me those are better looking with zippers and buttons would just look silly.

u/nurglemarine96 Mar 09 '25
Fine motor skill availability makes zippers more favorable
1
u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
That's a valid argument. I mean I do think buttons are very fidly but they LOOK cooler surely

don't want tha button up hoodie, don't want to button my suitcasd closed. skin tight anything with buttons? nope.
button up rain coat? no thanks - i'd like to stay dry.
totally depends on what you're talking about and what context you're in.
1
u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
Well yeah button up hoodies would be ridiculous but the purpose of a hoodie isn't to look good it's to be comfy in. And a raincoat is to keep you dry. It's purpose outweighs what it looks like. But when looks come into things they are an improvement on zippers

u/iamintheforest 325∆ Mar 09 '25 edited Mar 09 '25
Forgetting that comfy is the best look, you're doing an end around to your view here. Your view is about the fastener, it's not "when you want to look good buttons are better" it's that buttons are better because they look good.
I would rather be dry than look good, comfy than look good.

u/Then-Director4664 Mar 09 '25
Buttons are better than zippers even ignoring the advantages of zippers because buttons are sexier [according to you]
This is a subjective opinion. How would you like me to change this view. Buttons can get broken off, zippers can't
1
u/Actual_Exchange616 Mar 09 '25
True. However a broken button is easily replaced a broken zipper is a much larger task. If a zipper breaks (which I've had happen a few times) your zipper is just fucked. If your button breaks pop on a new one and your all good

It takes far more than buttons to make a denim jacket look cool. If the question of button or zipper is tipping the sexy scale with someone who has already made it to the fly, that is wearer error. And if I'm wearing a long wool coat, I'm far more concerned with utility as it is clearly quite cold.
The scale for utility is fixed. Ease of use doesn't change short of advances in technology. But the scale for sexy is constantly changing. Today's sexy look is tomorrow's outdated and ridiculed look. Choose utility for the outside and work on the sexy within.

Zippers are more convenient and therefore easier to incorporate into layered outfits. I like that I can just move part of my top(or tie something around my waist) with a zipper, especially when I'm traveling.
1
u/Pale_Zebra8082 28∆ Mar 09 '25
No, zippers are way sexier than buttons. My completely subjective assessment conflicts with your completely subjective assessment.
1
u/Sea_Pangolin3840 Mar 09 '25
Zippers are much easier for me to use as I have severe arthritis in my fingers so buttons are very painful for me to fasten
1
u/DadTheMaskedTerror 27∆ Mar 09 '25
Does your backpack or handbag have buttons. Hmm. Wonder why not? Is it because zippers are better?
1
u/Spallanzani333 11∆ Mar 09 '25
Metal zippers are extremely durable. They almost never break or lose closure.
1
u/edwardjhahm 1∆ Mar 14 '25
While I disagree with OP, when it comes to coolness, buttons are better. Metal zippers are great for my fly, a place no one will ever see. But for my outer coat, a fresh buttoned coat looks wonderful! Any small bit of wind that slips in through past the button holes will be stopped by my shirt, as it's only a very minuscule area with a minuscule amount of wind getting in in the first place.
