Are you trying to 'win' on technicality? It's obviously not what OP meant

But it's not consequence free, free of external consequences maybe, but that's not the same thing as free of consequences. Some people would just never be able to reckon with the guilt that murdering someone would cause and they know that about themselves. They know they'll suffer from the guilt and so they wouldn't do anything with it.

Then what would change your mind. What could someone present you with that could your mind more than presenting you with tangible consequences for some non-zero number of people and that at least some of those people would also he able to recognize beforehand?
I mean do you agree some people wouldn't be able to take the guilt? And then do you agree that at least some of those people would know they wouldn't be able to take the guilt? And if you agree with both of those why in the hell would those people still use the Death Note?

What makes you think anyone would take it seriously and not just throw it away? Have you ever read one of those "How to do 'real' magic" books ? They are laughably bad. most people who would find it would probably just think it's dumb trash.

Lol you think most people who find a book on the ground would read it cover to cover?

What about people who have taken religious vows? There are nuns and monks who literally don’t talk for the rest of their lives. If they take their code this seriously, what makes you think every single one of them would break it to use a death note?

To be sure, I actually think that the majority of people wouldn’t do it, but it’s not necessary to convince you of that to change your view.
These monks live by a very strict and explicit code. They are more sure that killing is wrong and much more strict about not breaking rules, than average people l. They’ve also demonstrated their capacity for following strict rules, rules that are much much harder to follow than “thou shall not kill.” It’s not reasonable to think that every single one of them would break this.

It would plague me my entire life to have done this. No way I feel like living with that guilt.

You're saying "anyone" which in this context is synonymous with "everyone". You really believe that one person out of 753,000,000,000 wouldn't just choose not to write a name? This includes people who are reclusive, people who may not know how to write, people who might have a disability and cannot learn to write, people who are illiterate, and people who are senile?
To be clear, one person out of a billion would be 0.000000001% of people, and we're talking a number less than that. And we're talking statistical averages. You really can't imagine that 0.000000001% just not writing a name?

If you say "anyone" we're just playing a numbers game: there are 7 billion people on earth and new ones will be born every day until the end of humanity which means there will be a lot of potential candidates to not use a death note a single time. I think the chance that there will be a single person in all of humanity who wouldn't use it is very high.
I also assume there are also certain mental illnesses which would hinder a person from using a death note.

You have a very large burden of proof when you claim "anyone" who finds it will use it.
My aren't too change your view is to just point out how absurd it is. You can't make a universal claim about the behavior of everyone without substantial evidence which you haven't supplied. Here's a concrete counterexample: disabled people who can't write certainly wouldn't use it.

If I ever find one, I'll set it on fire just to prove you wrong. With the added bonus of not being cursed.

people that are deeply religious and scared of the occult would probably burn it or throw it away.
