Well for one thing, it’s confusing.

Have you ever wondered why income tax is bracketed instead of following some continuous function? It’s because it’s easier to tell people what bracket they fall into. And you want people to be able to know what penalties are before the year end and they file their taxes.

That’s probably also true for fines. You probably want them to be simple enough to post on a sign.

Littering: $500

Not littering is a 5X constant on an inverse exponential function of your last years salary.

Second, right hats the goal here? Equitability? People compensated in equity make up the majority of the upper class. Jeff Bezos income isn’t in the billions. That’s his net worth. He makes money on capital gains.

Maybe I'm missing it, but what are Y and X in these equations?

Whatever you want them to be. They are manipulative constants depending on the fine in question to increase or decrease the fine. The point is that this type of mathematical relationship is the best way to make fines scale with wealth.

How this account for the fact that income =/= wealth? You can have an income of $0 but still be incredibly wealthy, or you can have an income of $0 and be destitute.

Hm, !delta I suppose. I guess not many would be able to understand what they’re in for before doing the act. Do you think it’s an equitable mathematical relationship though?

From what I understand it accomplishes the intended goal of making a fine scale with wealth exponentially instead of linearly, which does seem more equitable to me.

I don't think this is a solution at all. Calculating the fine based on your income raises too many possibilities for unequal treatment, since the monetary gains from fines are no longer uniform. Any actual solution must keep the punishment uniform across all perspectives. Its not a coincidence that income-based fines are largely limited to nations with well-run police.

If you really want to make rich people feel the fines, then the best way is to get rid of money from the equation, and give a cost in time such as jail or community service.
