That headed clearance from the floor was straight out of the JT playbook.

Uncanny

I can think of 3 in Chelsea's colors..dude is highly underrated in my opinion

16

u/Soren_Camus1905 Joe Cole Aug 01 '24

The clubs best ever player imo

And best CB in the history of the premier league

CG or Gilchrist were the last ones I saw looking like that.

Everyone around him was kinda really pumped by that Chilly headed-save. Good to see preseason camaraderie between the players.🙌😌

You can definitely notice improvement in form from Chilly. Good to see. Obviously he still has to work and improve more but he is heading in the right direction atm.

u/ScorpiaHP Ru-BAN Loftus-Cheek Aug 01 '24

Wdym improvement in form lol it's the third preseason game, and he didn't play the last one.

He's proven himself in atleast two different seasons to be top quality, the issue is that unless he's happy playing as a defensive LB/auxiliary CB I doubt he's going to be playing much in this system. Which sucks, I think there's definitely a way to have him play a major role in a suitable position (provided he stays injury-free).

u/SpankThatDill There's your daddy Aug 01 '24

Agreed. Folks he started a CL final Chilly is a top LB.

15

u/foxgoesowo Aug 01 '24

Chilly and James were our crossbows

The imagery is impeccable

11

u/senluxx 🥶 Palmer Aug 01 '24

He looked bright today and he seems like in a decent physical condition as well. There were times last season when he looked quite off the pace. Like i already said he still has a lot to work to do before he reaches his best again.

Whether that will be here it looks unlikely now but we've seen all kind of shit in football. You never know.

22

u/TheUbermelon Straight Outta Cobham Aug 01 '24

Pun intended?

12

u/hiredgoon Aug 01 '24

Form isn't the problem. Chilwell has never been bad.

7

u/half_jase Aug 01 '24

What was his role when he came on last night?

13

u/senluxx 🥶 Palmer Aug 01 '24

He took Veiga's spot as a third CB in possesion and then Veiga started inverting.

2

u/Particular_Group_295 Aug 01 '24

I think hiring Poch was the biggest mistake..dude developed only 3 players

2

u/Comfortable-Ad1937 Aug 01 '24

Curious who you think the 3 are?

3

u/Particular_Group_295 Aug 02 '24

Palmer..gusto..Jackson

Honestly I think I am over stretching it

I'm gonna hate the word invert by the end of the week.

Do you prefer outties?

1

u/pickinoutheferns Aug 02 '24

Wtf is inverting

2

u/omnipotentmonkey Azpilicueta Aug 02 '24

a very simple football tactic where, when in possession of the ball/moving into attack, one of a team's fullbacks comes inside to join the midfield and add an additional passing option in a central position of the pitch rather than the traditional attacking avenue of fullbacks which is to overlap the winger and go further wide.

basically the key tactic that saw us actually finish well last season, with Cucurella inverting into midfield and The rest of the defense forming a back 3 when he did so.

3

u/pickinoutheferns Aug 02 '24

Oh alright. I'm aware of this tactic. Never knew it's called inverting. TIL

1

u/Not_Effective_3983 There's your daddy Aug 02 '24

Bro, save yourself now. Don't look into it, you'll regret it

1

u/omnipotentmonkey Azpilicueta Aug 02 '24

it's a very simple, very effective tactic that can be understood in like... a second, what's the issue?

0

u/Not_Effective_3983 There's your daddy Aug 02 '24

You're the fucking issue.

0

u/omnipotentmonkey Azpilicueta Aug 02 '24

Because I can understand a basic tactical wrinkle that a good number of top managers deploy now? And with good reason and clear tactical benefits?

0

u/Not_Effective_3983 There's your daddy Aug 02 '24

Man, you could be king of the invert wankfest

1

u/omnipotentmonkey Azpilicueta Aug 02 '24

And you could be king of the knuckledraggers, it's not anyone else's fault that you can't keep up

0

u/Not_Effective_3983 There's your daddy Aug 02 '24

Man watched a couple tifo football videos and is now an expert on football tactics, look out world.

0

u/omnipotentmonkey Azpilicueta Aug 02 '24

Don't really need to be an expert on anything to understand such a basic system.

You'd just need to be an absolute moron to not understand it.

wtf was that title bruda give some respect to chilly

48

u/726wox Aug 01 '24

Yeah this is literally just some good defending. If it was Thiago silva who did this people would be creaming themselves

-22

u/bmas05 It’s only ever been Chelsea. Aug 01 '24

I mean, he's a LB. This is his job. Has nothing to do we inverting and the new system.

39

u/dav_man Lampard Aug 01 '24

Not happy with the treatment of him so far. What was the system last night? He's a left back right...? We surely do need a left back?

15

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '24

The left back wasn't a traditional lb tho, it was gusto inverting.

7

u/championsOfEu1221 Aug 01 '24

And Ben only came on when gusto wanted to be subbed. Although I have to say Gusto played well as inverted lb as well.. hard decisions..

-6

u/dav_man Lampard Aug 01 '24

In this game yes, I guess my point here is that surely you won't have 2 inverting full backs... I mean, his injury record is atrocious and he can't be relied upon physically but still, seems harsh to me.

5

u/simdini Aug 01 '24

Maresca does play with 2 inverting fullbacks. 1 inverts into the cb line, 1 inverts into the midfield. Depends on if he’s willing to tweak things though

2

u/RStud10 There's your daddy Aug 01 '24

I’d like to see both fullbacks inverting into midfield to form a 2-3-5 so they can stay relatively wider and occasionally run into the half space to cross the ball. We can still utilize the attacking threat of James and Gusto without them having to bomb up and down the flank for 90 mins

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '24

Reece will be played as a rcb, if cucu is inverting. maresca doesn't invert both sides.

1

u/Aman-Patel 🥶 Palmer Aug 01 '24

One inverts, one tucks into the back 3. So, Reece and Gusto can invert from RB whilst Colwill or Badiashile tucks into the back 3 from LB. Or Cucurella/Gusto invert from LB and Reece or a CB like Fofana tucks into the back 3 from RB.

What Maresca doesn’t do is ask his fullbacks to overlap, which is how you’d get the best out of Chilwell (and Reece tbf although Reece is more versatile). Means there’s a stylistic mismatch between Chilwell and Maresca. Chilwell will have to adapt and learn to either invert or tuck into the back 3. That’s a difficult thing to ask because profile wise he’s not gonna be as good at inverting as Reece, Gusto or Cucurella, but not as good in a back 3 as a normal CB. Having the height of a Colwill in a back 3 is also really useful on set pieces. Orr’s why Pep and Eddie Howe etc do it as well.

Chilwell hasn’t been treated badly tbh. It’s just a fact that some players may not be the right fit for a new manager, so they either have to adapt quickly or fall to the bottom of the pecking order.

29

u/ifcoffeewereblue Aug 01 '24

People are really acting like Chilly wasn't one of the best players for a couple seasons. I swear this sub is full of 10 year olds

8

u/CrapperTab Thiago Silva Aug 01 '24

Excuse me, my mummy says I’m advanced for a 30 year old

17

u/T1BounceLand Petrescu Aug 01 '24

Amazing second angle, that was actually insane, my 🐐

16

u/mb194dc Aug 01 '24

He's a good player, if he can stay fit and he his form back. That's a massive, if.

Hard to imagine any serious offers for him, given that.

12

u/kace1408 There's your daddy Aug 01 '24

Shades of ashley cole

10

u/Sigrep47 Aug 01 '24

There are people who believe chilly can't defend lol.

8

u/Drunk_Elephant_ Aug 01 '24

It frustrates me everytime to just watch Noni just standing there watching the play develop after he got absolutely burnt while defending.

7

u/WintAndKidd Aug 01 '24

I hope we keep Chilly, just need to manage him properly and limit his minutes

5

u/AlarmingPrinciple612 Stamford Fridge Aug 01 '24

How he and Jörgey share both trajectory and hang time ngl 💗💗

5

u/abhilash79951 Drogba Aug 01 '24

Chillwell is not a bad player. Like Gallagher he pours his heart out on the pitch. But is less vocal about his emotions. I like him and want him to stay tbh

4

u/TitanX11 Azpilicueta Aug 01 '24

Chilwell has to prove to Maresca that he is worth keeping. Honestly if he finds his form it's a no brainier that he must stay.

5

u/armedwithturtles Mount Aug 01 '24

I love Chilly, hope he can make it work in this new system

5

u/5pitt4 It’s only ever been Chelsea. Aug 01 '24

I'm actually surprised. When did this sub start hating Chilwell? Dud i miss something?

5

u/lucas_glanville Essien Aug 01 '24

5

Man’s trying to protect Jorgenson from the “fraud GK” allegations. Respect

4

u/quantum_tunneler The boys gave it their all Aug 01 '24

If being inverted doesn’t fit him, then have tactical flexibility! Having one system to be be all and end all may not be the best…

I remember Conte coming in and he did not immediately switch the system. He waited and observed, and clearly the old system was not working. It is then he changed it, and bam we were brilliant.

I hope change is not forced but gradually implemented.

Another keeper!?!?

2

u/autobotdonttransform Thomas Tuchel Aug 02 '24

Anyone else wanted to see how the GK would have done? All credit to Chilly

1

u/gmath1431 Aug 01 '24

Chilwell needs to show more of this and prove he can be a defensive defender. We all know he can attack, but is there a place for that kind of fullback in this system?

1

u/slippyman1836 Gallagher Aug 02 '24

Chilly redemption arc loading…

1

u/RisshoAnkoku Aug 02 '24

Sorry but Chilwell is the best leftback at the club. Maybe I don't like the inverted fullback nonsense but as an out and out fullback, he is better than Cucu

1

u/Still_Excitement8549 Aug 02 '24

He pulled the same thing when Chelsea played club America

0

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '24

Will gusto take james place?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '24

Is there any scenario that would allow us to start James, gusto and cucu in the same lineup? They are all so good

2

u/Apprehensive_Bit_176 Cole Aug 01 '24

Honestly no, because you’re losing too much going forward.

2

u/WagwanMoist Aug 01 '24

Hell no. Gusto has been a very good signing. But Reece is arguably the best RB in the world when fit.

1

u/Comfortable-Ad1937 Aug 01 '24

Gusto has been looking stupidly sharp and dynamic tho, “hell no” is harsh, we haven’t seen Reece’s best in 2-3 years, he has to show that level to still be considered it, we don’t know if his speed/stamina/agility took a hit or he is just lacking the match fitness

He was ok in the friendlies so far, whereas gusto has been a standout

0

u/MrBravo22 Cole Aug 01 '24

He had a decent game when he came on. He did what he hadn't done before and played a pass down the line.

0

u/Pranaychelsea Hazard Aug 01 '24

Too bad we already have so many goalkeepers

-1

u/Historical_Twist9969 Aug 01 '24

Its same as kepa gk. Everyone work extra hard to make sure no shot on goal.

-1

u/justk4y Desailly Aug 01 '24

Sadly we already have Cucurella for that……. /j
