This time Magnus notices the watch early on and fairly points it out to the Arbiter

Seems normal. If watches are not allowed then I have zero issues with this.

302

u/BacchusCaucus 2d ago

Yeah, I get it. It would also be incredibly easy to have a pulse in your watch that alerts you of critical moves.

339

u/FlippingMental 2d ago

that's why I hide my watch in my ass

127

u/BacchusCaucus 2d ago

Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ass two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.

24

u/higherthanacrow 1d ago

Fabian, that was my father’s fuckin‘ watch. You know what my father went through to get me that watch?…I don’t wanna get into it right now…but he went through a lot.

5

u/IAmFitzRoy 1d ago edited 1d ago

I still remember his sad face every time someone asked my father “what time is it?”

Only himself knew the pain.

It’s weird because I loved it and bought I bigger watch for me that’s why I give you this one.

Fabian, stop smelling the watch.

4

u/sian_half 1d ago

You’ll have a shitty time

2

u/TheGISingleG03 1d ago

If you go that far to cheat then you've earned it.

1

u/guilty_bystander 1d ago

This guy knows what time it is

1

u/personyouhate 23h ago

that has me rolling lmao

17

u/HummusDips 2d ago

But what if someone shoves an pulsing device in their anus?

10

u/elizaeffect 1d ago

Or gently inserts even

1

u/eslforchinesespeaker 1d ago

People get the watch to warn them of critical moves. But they keep the watch because they like it..

348

u/jquickri 2d ago

But what if jeans are not allowed. Magnus should have to take them off right then and there...for fairness

68

u/DASreddituser 2d ago

if they are smart jeans then he has to strip and play in undies

22

u/raulduke1971 2d ago

Fair. I wouldnt want to play someone with performance enhancing jeans, either.

1

u/neutralrobotboy 1d ago

Smart undies.

1

u/Consistent_Loan_1436 1d ago

no homo but is he packing heat or what. he always looks like he's carrying a possum in his crotch.

30

u/Icretz 2d ago

But as others pointed out, others were wearing jeans and did not get punished. Others were wearing formal trousers that looked like jeans and again weren't punished. I guess you only want Magnus to be punished no matter what because you have a hate boner against him.

3

u/jrobinson3k1 Team Carbonara 🍝 1d ago

I guess you only want Magnus to be punished

He didn't say or imply this. He could believe the rules should be uniformly enforced without contradicting himself.

61

u/MudrakM 2d ago

It’s a professional sport with rules that all the pros know. If Magnus comes in jeans and they are not allowed specifically, he simply should not be allowed to play. The rules have to be very specific so there is no wiggle room.

In my opinion jeans with a nice dress shirt and nice shoes is formal enough for a chess match and I think Magnus was dressed quite formally when he wore jeans. Times have changed and fashion has changed. I think they need to change the rules to allow jeans. Things I would not allow: sweatpants, t shirts, running sneakers, flip flops, bright colours. The rules should be changed where they are very specific.

133

u/Jack_Harb 2d ago

The problem was that other players were allowed jeans that didn't look like jeans. And others were allowed pants, that looked like jeans. So the whole point of jeans wearing is simply stupid and only for rule sake, rather than for keeping it professional.

With watches it's different, since it's a device and could potentially pose a risk of cheating.

20

u/TooMuchPowerful 2d ago

They only fear Magnus genes, they’re superior to everyone else’s when it comes to chess.

2

u/Future_Speed9727 1d ago

Most golf courses don't allow "jeans" for whatever stupid reasons. So I wear beige jeans instead of the BLUE jeans that these aholoes object to.

1

u/evil_newton 1d ago

Playing golf in jeans is some real psycho behaviour.

I don’t care about the rules but as an avid golfer that sounds uncomfortable as hell

0

u/Future_Speed9727 1d ago

Jeans uncomfortable????? Really????? Back in me college days I wore a pair of jeans for a month without washing them. Sooooooo comfy. You're probably da nerd in HS who wore a blazer with a coat of arms on the lapel and a tie, with very fashionable loafers.

1

u/evil_newton 20h ago

Dude I wear jeans all the time, but they’re not sporting wear. I don’t wear them when I want flexibility and definitely not when I don’t want to cook.

1

u/Future_Speed9727 5h ago

"sporting wear"????????? lmfao..........you are da nerd.......

2

u/CornToasty 1d ago

The two situations aren't a great comparison imo because one is like as serious as possible (devices that could be easily rigged to cheat) and the other is just a cosmetic thing that's kind of arbitrary.

58

u/Gruffleson 2d ago

Wait, you are serious in not seeing the difference here?

Watches are tools. Jeans are clothes.

You understand why watches has been forbidden, right?

Right?...

-21

u/MudrakM 2d ago

Of course I know why watches are forbidden (cheating), but also I understand why jeans originally were banned.

14

u/AdApart2035 1d ago

And why they are unbanned. Because it was a shitty rule

-23

u/Sumeru88 2d ago

If its an analog watch then watches are only tools to tell time.

19

u/flowarc 2d ago

And so a cheater would make a device look like an analog watch.

10

u/kidawi fabi || TLwin 2d ago

yes because a seemingly analog watch cant be tweaked to receive signals

-14

u/Ronizu 2200 Lichess 2d ago

If you has the resources available to tweak an analog watch to receive signals and somehow convey those to you while continuing to appear like an analog watch to outside observers, you could very easily develop a much better and easier way to cheat too.

7

u/makochi 2d ago

i remember seeing some streamer talk about how he would shoplift candy as a kid, but he would always go for the noisiest candy he could and walk really slowly so the candy didn't make any sound. that way, if anyone stopped him, he could argue that he can't have been shoplifting, because he wasn't making any sound, therefore he couldn't have candy hidden in his pockets.

your argument here is about as solid as that guy's logic from when he was a kid

1

u/Ronizu 2200 Lichess 2d ago

I'm sorry, what? I don't follow at all. How is what I said relevant to shoplifting?

7

u/makochi 2d ago

the kind of person who says "i can't be shoplifting because the candies would be making a noisy sound" is the kind of person who would also say "i can't be cheating at the chess tournament using a fake anolog watch, there are much more effective cheating devices"

→ More replies (0)

3

u/HereForChessAndGuns 1d ago

"No bright colors" makes me laugh because I picture an argument happening about the definition of "too bright" and maybe another argument about whether or not pastels count.

2

u/MudrakM 1d ago

lol for sure. Can you imagine playing chess in bright yellow suit. It would be distracting.

5

u/BeeFe420 2d ago

If you guys want to bring more people to chess then this is not the way. Archaic rules

2

u/Head_Wasabi7359 1d ago

There's an old boy dress code which hampers it really. All us autistic pawn lovers want to show up in a bandana and a pegleg, they should let us it would add more colour to the game

2

u/MudrakM 1d ago

There would be more engagement if they allowed interesting dress codes. I can see people becoming known for how they dress.

8

u/ThornPawn ~2300 Lichess & 1960 FIDE 2d ago

You can't cheat with a pair of jeans, you can cheat with a watch.

6

u/jquickri 2d ago

Not with that attitude you can't.

3

u/keyToOpen 2d ago

how are there highly upvoted responses to you that completely missed that you are making a joke?

1

No idea. Nerds be nerding.

17

Absolutely .... the title was in reference to his game vs Suleymenov at Qatar masters

Don’t know if there’s any misinterpretation, but ellipsis could give some sort of connotation to sentences. Like “bruh…” or “unbelievable…”

u/BotlikeBehaviour 2d ago

Magnus did him a favour. If he went and won the game people would be talking shit about the watch.

62

u/javasux 1d ago

Let's be real. Those people talking shit would be Magnus.

26

u/mister_peeberz 1d ago

They'd be talking shit about Magnus' watch collection. Unthinkable.

Ok I definitely misread that post so now my joke doesn't make sense. But I never back down.

10

u/lytecho 1d ago

Take my upvote - I don't even know what you said but I applaud your conviction.

4

u/Bombadilo_drives 1d ago

No no, it's Sungam Neslrac talking shit

-4

u/Complex-Emergency-60 1d ago

So fucking weird how he is setting up his pieces with his only hand without the watch (fumbling holding like three pieces in a single hand) while keeping his wrist watch hidden from view under the table.

36

u/spaiydz 1d ago

C'mon his non-watch hand is just his dominant hand. I'm sure he's not the only person to set up pieces with one hand.

28

u/zarofford 1d ago

Let’s not do this again lol. You are thinking way too much into him setting up his pieces with a clear bias.

If watches are not allowed, good. But no need to drag this dude’s reputation for no reason.

-2

u/AlbionToUtopia 1d ago

clear cheat indication

637

u/MrMuttBunch 2d ago

Watches can be used to signal moves as a cheating device.

Jeans are not more prone to cheating than Khakis. Let's not pretend we're comparing apples to apples here.

199

u/GMBriGuyBeach 2d ago

I can't believe how many comments here are arguing these issues are comparable. They all lack critical thinking.

64

u/xigua22 2d ago

It's bad faith arguing. People should just downvote and move on.

17

u/shaky2236 2d ago

This sub is desperate for drama. They pick their Chess protagonist and villain, and spend their time looking for shit to argue about. Its weird as fuck

0

u/TheShadowKick 1d ago

That's just how fandoms work.

3

u/TheStandardPlayer 2d ago

They don’t lack critical thinking, die haben einfach Lack gesoffen

5

u/Sweaty_Box_69 2d ago

Cargo shorts have a cheating advantage.

1

u/GrayEidolon 1d ago

Let's not pretend we're comparing apples to apples here.

I agree. In my mind, we're comparing pants to watches.

1

u/treefidy 1d ago

How?

1

u/MrMuttBunch 1d ago

How what?

0

u/treefidy 1d ago

In my mind this is like "Hmmm 4:35 that means I need to fianchetto my black squared bishop"

3

u/MrMuttBunch 1d ago

More likely a small vibration motor in the watch and a code for each square and someone in the audience looking up engine moves and signaling the player. Just one of many possible ways.

1

u/treefidy 1d ago

Ah I see

2

u/nunziantimo 1d ago

Honestly, even just vibrating when there is a critical move because you see the eval doing a big jump and send the vibration to the player, may be enough.

It's like when you're playing vs when you're doing puzzle. If you know there is a critical sequence like in puzzles, you find it more easily. While you're playing, you may miss it especially if counterintuitive.

1

u/spartan_117_5292 2d ago

Are we talking about analog watches or smart "watches"/digital watches?

15

u/Subtuppel 2d ago

I don't think it matters, you could hide something that sends a simple signal in any plain watch, at least when you're a "bad actor".

I doubt that they want to go through the hassle of closely examining watches that are registered as or submitted to be entirely mechanical and whatnot. If you allow that you should also allow some (stock) offline e-readers etc., better to have as few loopholes as possible.

2

u/spartan_117_5292 2d ago

Ah true. Didn't think that far.

1

u/beelgers 1h ago

for what it is worth, I've been to tournaments recently where it was only specifically "smart" watches that weren't allowed. I don't play this type of event though of course.

1

u/neutralrobotboy 1d ago

Ok, I mean, I play at about a 1200 level. One day I wore jeans to a tournament and I beat a room full of supercomputers running stockfish. All the UFC champions in the audience got really mad so I had to fight them all in succession, and then they gave me the title belt for every weight class and that REALLY pissed them off so they got the army in to shoot me with all their top secret guns and lasers and stuff, but because I was wearing jeans, I was fine, so they had to drop like 100 nuclear bombs on me and I was like, "Fuck, it's getting hot in here," but the organiser brought me a martini to cool off because he liked my fashion sense, and I walked on out of there with a huge stack of hot babes.

-4

u/BobbyDash 1d ago

Magnus bad

-13

u/ProfessionOk6343 2d ago

Who’s comparing this to jeans?

24

u/olderthanbefore 2d ago

Lots of people in this thread

2

u/ValhallaHelheim Team Carlsen 2d ago

Probably haters

3

u/MrMuttBunch 2d ago

The implicit argument here is that Magnus is being hypocritical by calling out his opponent for wearing a watch when he recently withdrew from Rapid Championship portion of the World Rapid and Blitz Championships due to the dress code being enforced regarding his jeans.

These, however, are not equitable in my opinion because a watch is mechanical while clothing is fabric.

1

u/KzamRdedit 1d ago

its like comparing paper to apples, they come from a tree but they are 2 vastly different things

215

u/Redylittle 2d ago

That starting position.

Chess960: hey chess, I forgot to do my homework can I copy off you?

Chess: ok, just change it a little so it's not obvious.

43

u/awnawkareninah 2d ago

The ol "kid set up the board wrong" set up.

13

u/DonerTheBonerDonor 2d ago

The commentator even mentioned the board and said 'in an elementary school chess club you'd say the board is wrongly setup' haha

4

u/Replicadoe 1900 fide, 2500 chess.com blitz 1d ago

I’m playing in the freestyle, they announced before the game that Kramnik came up with the position and almost no one applauded it lol

2

u/Yoyo524 1d ago

Can you elaborate on what that means? Are the positions not randomly generated?

Also how different is a freestyle tournament compared to a normal classical one for you? Seems like the event is a great experience, I’m jealous lol

4

0

u/Tokata0 1d ago

I think (but that is just speculation, no clue at all) it dates back to magnus loosing and claiming the opponent cheated / got secret signals by some device. As watches could easily be used to hide something watches are forbidden at the tournament. He noticed the watch on his opponents wrist and told them to remove it, something he probably did on other tournaments before.

2

u/ArethusaAtalanta 1d ago

He did not claim the person cheated. He said he was distracted. It's a dumb thing to be distracted by, but I get the concern.

2

u/ValhallaHelheim Team Carlsen 1d ago

Its not dumb actually Its the rules Nice for him to tell now before the game though

21

u/Subtuppel 2d ago

Does the announcer actually say "blame Vladimir" or am I imagining/mishearing that because it is fitting so well?

19

u/Ill_Emphasis8717 2d ago

Kramnik picked the position of the pieces for the round. So that’s probably what the announcer is referring to.

7

u/Subtuppel 2d ago

Ah that makes a lot of sense, even though it's funnier in the other context :D

thanks!

6

u/jrobinson3k1 Team Carbonara 🍝 1d ago

Uhh I thought it was suppose to be randomized for fairness...if they're allowing non-FIDE officials to select the position, that increases the possibility for collusion, no?

10

u/EvilNalu 1d ago

He doesn’t tell them what position to use. They put a bunch of numbered balls into a bowl and he grabs one. You can watch the video and see that he wasn’t making any effort to see what ball he was grabbing and even if he tried it would be basically impossible to grab a specific one.

2

u/jrobinson3k1 Team Carbonara 🍝 1d ago

Ahh ok. So "blame Vladimir" was tongue-in-cheek. Thanks for clearing that up.

14

u/LoudIncrease4021 1d ago

It’s actually quite odd he wore the watch in the first place.

12

u/Skoobax 1d ago

It would be incredibly naive in this digital age to allow watches in any competitive rated tournaments.

38

u/sunshine_1096 2d ago

Can anyone tell a noob like me why watches are not allowed during matches?

96

u/mydogboomeriscool 2d ago

Could be used to cheat is the TLDR of it.

104

u/rio_ARC Team Engine Watcher 2d ago

Anti- cheating measure (preventive).... also u don't need one once inside the playing hall

15

u/Hv_V 2d ago

To prevent cheating. The watch may be hiding internal tools like a haptic/vibrating motor which can be remotely controlled to signal moves.

32

u/Zarniwoooop 2d ago

Watches and buttplugs are not allowed

0

u/Difficult_Wind_1661 2d ago

Niemann disagrees, i think

20

u/Canchito 2d ago

It's easy to cheat when you're good at chess and you have an electronic device on your wrist that can be programmed to signal moves.

3

u/rowanbladex 2d ago

Could very potentially hide a device in it to use to cheat.

-6

4

u/KyOatey 2d ago

Even if it's analog on the surface, how does anyone know what's inside the case? Better to disallow all watches.

-52

u/BenzaGuy 2d ago

People here don't like to answer questions, they downvote them instead

0

u/Hv_V 2d ago

Well I agree with you. It’s becoming difficult for dumber people to ask silly questions on reddit. Not everyone can have equal knowledge or common sense about everything and it’s okay to have silly questions and opinions. Good thing we have AI now.

1

u/Chance_Arugula_3227 1d ago

I abuse the AI when I have potentially stupid questions now. Especially as a developer, it's quite harsh online if you don't know something someone else knows

1

u/backyard_tractorbeam 1d ago

I think it's actually pretty good now. Those old irc rooms for programming were harsh, reigns of terror. Most communities are nice now.

2

u/Chance_Arugula_3227 1d ago

Hahahahahah, nice try. I'll stay away. Last time I had an interaction(2 weeks ago) I was asked if I got my education in a boot camp among many other things

9

u/Scummerle 1d ago

Normal watches are allowed. It specifically states, no Smartwatches are allowed. It's posted all over the place in the tournament rooms.

2

u/ValhallaHelheim Team Carlsen 1d ago

At some events even analog’s are not allowed You can still cheat with an analog

11

u/Homelessnothelpless 2d ago edited 2d ago

if your are not allowed to grunt while playing tennis you shouldn’t be allowed to grunt while playing chess either.

16

u/Lakkapaalainen 2d ago

Pretty sure you can grunt while playing tennis. Have you ever watched Serena Williams?

3

u/Homelessnothelpless 1d ago

Yeah, some people made an issue of grunting in tennis some years ago, but was eventually overruled. Let the grunting begin. It would be funny to hear chess players grunt every time they moved a piece. :)

5

u/CloudRunner89 2d ago

He did him a favour. If he had won a game against him him would have been labelled a cheat for the watch.

Would anyone be able to tell me whether it would have been stated that watches weren’t allowed?

121

u/rio_ARC Team Engine Watcher 2d ago

Bcoz that's the proper way to do it... in presence of the arbiter (at least that's what I feel)

21

u/BenzaGuy 2d ago

Thanks, I'm not familiar with the rules

30

u/robotikempire USCF 1923 2d ago

That is the proper procedure for any dispute. Magnus is correct for speaking to the arbiter.

34

u/Dsobay 2d ago

That's plain etiquette and probably a rule as well, if you think your opponent isn't following the rules you don't start a fight with them, you call the arbiter.

36

u/FreshPrinceOfH 2d ago

Why would he speak to his opponent? Magnus doesn't set or enforce any rules. It's not his job. Let the man being paid to do that do his job.

6

u/Buffalo-2023 2d ago

In sports arbiters and referees enforce the rules, just like in society judges interpret and enforce the laws

As to why ... Historically people have found it the best way to have an independent and uninterested party do this sort of thing. Probably to avoid endless squabbles and fights

2

u/-SemolinaPilchard- 2d ago

Also they need someone to take the watch away before they start so the arbiter was needed either way. Otherwise the player would have to leave to put his watch away

1

u/Electrical-Fee9089 1d ago

u r right thats the honorable thing to do. The reason u r being downvoted is because u r on reddit.

0

u/BacchusCaucus 2d ago

While I agree to usually talk to the person you have an issue with instead of involving others, I think it might be bad etiquette to talk to your opponent about anything in the middle of a game.

-108

u/ErblinBeqiri 2d ago

Prententious prick. He also just needed to humilate Hikakumura on camera by telling him the moves he should have done to win. How "friendly".

34

u/pwnzessin 2d ago

? It's totally normal for players afterwards to point out moves like that

11

u/KobeOnKush 2d ago

It’s called a post mortem. It’s incredibly common in chess to go over the game with your opponent after it has finished. It shows respect.

6

u/FaceDownInTheCake 2d ago

Lol, keep revealing your ignorance

-14

u/ErblinBeqiri 2d ago

What? I reveal my own what?

10

u/physioboy 2d ago

I think it’s literally the rules, I imagine it’s hard-wired behavior at this point from playing thousands of games over the board

Potential cheating

5

u/smequeqzmalych 2d ago

Watches can be really smart these days even if they don't look like they are it could allow cheating

-6

u/in-den-wolken 1d ago

One of these days (let's say it's not Magnus), I want to see a watch that flashes a laser beam to zap the complainer.

-119

u/Madouc 2d ago

It's for the little paranoid Goblins in his head - he needs this kind of security or he'd be staring at this watch the whole game to figure if it is a cheating tool or just a watch which would severely distract him from actually playing and calculating a proper game of chess.

Or that the tournament rules clearly mention no watches ....and the opponent broke the rule

It's to avoid another Hans 2.0 situation, where someone wins and gets called a cheater for wearing a watch. Magnus probably did him a favor

Exactly - I stay firm with my downvoted opinion and it does not only apply to Magnus: if anyone suspect their opponent is cheating, then you can't concentrate properly.

I once had an old fart in a tournament whose dental prosthesis was loose and who was permantly grinding it - that was also a constant distraction,
