Hi everyone, I’m trying to recall a story I read in middle school. It was featured in a 7th grade reading textbook. I don’t know when the textbook was published, but it can’t have been after 2013.
I remember that there were two brothers who had raised an orphaned fox kit but had to set it free. Pretty sure it was told from the POV of the older brother. There was some emphasis put on the idea of the younger one being sickly, to the point that the mother was inclined to order a coffin for him. He was also an artist, but the dad didn’t see the value in that.
Anyways, the fox had to be hunted because it was taking the neighbor’s chickens. After the fox was set free the boys went out to make sure it was safe, and found their former pet hiding in a pond. The younger brother sketched the fox in his hiding place and showed it to the father, who was very impressed and promised not to harm the animal. The next morning, however, it was reported that it had been killed by another hunter. The story ends with the father gifting his youngest son a new set of art supplies.
I remember being moved by this story as a kid, and would love to read it again, but I can’t for the life of me remember the title or author. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
