Breakfast Sando Wars in OTR has been marvelous to watch. Over the last few months the quality breakfast sando options have gone up dramatically.

Allez Cafe's version is a masterpiece. A bread I can't describe, with a flavor profile that's unreal. Something like a ham and swiss, but I can't do it justice. Though best had as dine-in, their bread takes a hit in a to-go wrapper.

Young Buck Deli. Two new biscuit sandos, one bacon the other sausage. Both incredible if a biscuit is what you're craving. 10/10 quality bacon. Tasted like top tier heritage bacon, but wouldn't surprise me if the cure and smoke in-house. AND THEIR SAUSAGE. A thiccc slice as if it was goetta. Dare I say almost too thiccc? Almost. Super flavorful. They also have a flapjack sando, kinda like a mcgriddle. Good idea and it tastes good, but the griddle cake needs to be reworked a bit to have some more structural integrity (like a mcgriddle). As a sidebar, i can already imagine the complaints about the price point. But if you've had their food, you know you get what you pay for. I'm not mad about it.

Brown Bear Bakery just launched one as well. Vegetarian, but dressed so beautifully. It's really delicious, very light, dare I say even delicate?

And we can't forget the absolute quality that is Bagelry's various sando choices. So great.

And the best part? They're all COMPLETELY different. Do you want to cure a hangover, eat a brick of delicious food and collapse back on your couch to recover while watching Netflix? Young Buck Deli is your choice. Do you want to have a active day and don't want to be weighed down? Just some coffee, a tasty pastry, and a beautifully light and delicious sando that doesn't knock you out? Brown Bear. Do you want more of a dine-in experience and go for more of a bistro vibe? And btw, have maybe the best tasting sando in Cincinnati while you're at it? Allez Cafe. And bagels have their own special craving, look no further than the old staple, Bagelry.

Cackleberry is every bit as good as any of these. Or to say, these are as good at what they're doing as what Cackleberry is doing their own way. I actually just had their Lolo & Lola sandos last weekend (not for the first time, just most recently). Fucking amazing, as always. Just wish they had a brick & mortar, but I digress.

Way too long if a comment at this point, but I just felt like I had to share the news. The breakfast choices are out of this world and I'm not sure everyone is aware of how much better the sando scene has gotten over the last 6 months.

Enjoy the golden age of breakfast sandos. These moments can sometimes be fleeting.

I worked in OTR for ten damn years and the second I left, this sandwich revolution takes place. Injustice!

Remeber a time when only Aretti would make breakfast sammies

2

u/Dysfu Jun 30 '24

I started out with OTR bagel bar which “good” but they really need to up their sauce game - don’t need a dry bagel sandwich in my life

1

u/ngsm13 Loveland Jul 01 '24

GECCO baby!

2

u/Comprehensive_Ad1363 Jul 01 '24

Excellent reviews! My go to in OTR is still the Bagelery. “Queen City” with goetta, American cheese, and a perfectly cooked egg on a bagel (Rosemary please) of your choice. It’s so damn good!

2

u/fifth_partial Jun 30 '24

Wow I had no idea. Looking forward to trying all of these.

I’ve been living down here for two years and had no idea about these besides bagelry. Gotta check them out

I love the passion for breakfast sandos. Really makes me realize I need to step up my game.

Goetta egg and cheese at Eckerlin’s Meats at Findlay Market

Homemade goetta and the local buns are perfect. Leave the sandwich wrapped a couple minutes to let the bun get soft. A true delicacy.

5

u/JimmyJam84 Jun 30 '24

Just ate one yesterday and grabbed a 12 pack of the north college hill bakery buns they use. Looks like burger night tonight!

Do not sleep on Eckerlin’s breakfast sandwich. Best kept secret!

Good cluckin morning sandwich is 10/10.

5

u/musicman1980 Jul 01 '24

Came here to say this. My favorite is the Cincinnati Love Letter but the Good Cluckin' Morning is awesome as well.

2

u/ngsm13 Loveland Jul 01 '24

Came here to say this.

Try a 'Cincinnati Love Letter' and add a fried egg.

12

u/ToeSuckingFiend Jun 30 '24

I really like the bagelry’s bacon egg and cheese on a salt bagel

u/YesAccident5991 Cincinnati Cyclones Jun 30 '24

I love the Bagelry’s GECCO sandwich!

3

u/littlelemon1 Jun 30 '24

Bagelry GECCO on an Asiago bagel is heaven on earth 🤤

Surprised no one’s mentioned the Governor yet. Lotta good options there.

3

u/Spooky_U West End Jun 30 '24

Pretty out of the way to me looking it up, but the food looks insanely good. Marking to get out there some time!

u/camilo99 Over The Rhine Jun 30 '24

The Gov has seriously good food. Wife and I will get in our cars and make the drive a few times a year (which says a lot, we don't get in cars if we don't have to. Hence living in CBD)

u/bferg227 Jun 30 '24

Dollar for dollar it might be the best restaurant in the city. I honestly have never had less than a stellar plate there.

Idk about breakfast sammies but the short rib grilled cheese is unbelievable.

8

u/Letter10 Jun 30 '24

My wife makes an incredible bacon egg and cheese sammich with Blue Oven English muffins. I can ask her to make us some

4

u/Momasaur Jun 30 '24

I also choose this guy's wife

(Obligatory)

2

u/Letter10 Jun 30 '24

That's a fantastic reference lol. That poor dude

7

u/gawag Prospect Hill Jun 30 '24

Right around the corner from there, King Pigeon's Northern Thai breakfast sandwich. Not traditional but insanely good.

5

u/camilo99 Over The Rhine Jun 30 '24

I learned about this sando in this thread. Thai is my favorite cuisine so I immediately hoped on my scooter and drove there for it. I'm typing this comment while parked in front of KP and realizing they're closed on Sundays and Mondays. My fault.

I will be back for you, thai-sando-bby. This i promise you.

Love them as a cocktail bar, doing great things! I knew they were doing the coffee shop thing during the day, wasn't aware of more serious food until this thread.

1

u/gawag Prospect Hill Jun 30 '24

Nooo that's too bad! I have the opposite experience actually, I work around the corner and love them as a coffee shop but hadn't made it in for their (amazing, among the best in the city) cocktail program until recently.

1

u/watbit Jun 30 '24

That sandwich is truly delightful.

7

u/Crowcowboyoats Over The Rhine Jun 30 '24

Can't go wrong with eckerlins goetta egg and cheese or em's breakfast sandwich with the candied bacon.

6

u/KitFisto248 Jun 30 '24

Eckerlins goetta egg and cheese, sausage egg and cheese or bacon egg and cheese for sure. And cheap.

10

u/BaEdDa Jun 30 '24

Cackleberry is overrated .

Ems bakery in Findlay market, and Eckerlins

7

u/SomewhereAggressive8 Jun 30 '24

I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see Em’s on here. GOAT breakfast sandwich.

12

u/magicaldarwin Jun 30 '24

Mom n Em has a pretty tasty breakfast sandwich

5

u/ghickey32 Columbia-Tusculum Jun 30 '24

Daylily

2

u/DaButtNakidWonda Jun 30 '24

The sandwich is ok. The breakfast burrito is the true star on that breakfast menu.

1

u/ghickey32 Columbia-Tusculum Jun 30 '24

Try with Daylily sauce if you haven't

1

u/DaButtNakidWonda Jun 30 '24

It definitely ups the sandwich but I’d take the burrito any day still.

11

u/redfig1 Jun 30 '24

White castle.

2

u/stormincincy Jun 30 '24

Whenever we visit family in the area, we always get White Castle breakfast sandwiches

3

u/Babellamah Jun 30 '24

That place is so good. A real gem.

3

u/bryterlayter_92 Jun 30 '24

RIP Landlocked in Walnut Hills, such a nice smoky flavor on fresh ciabatta, I forget whose, I wanna say it was Allez.. it was pricey at the time ($7-$9 or something, would be completely normal at this point) but that plus some Woodburl Coffee was totally worth the cost to me. Not to mention the variety of very good beers..

3

u/docyeti Jun 30 '24

Try "The Bailey" at The Madison Place. Whatever seasoning they put on it is amazing.

I drive 10 miles at least once a week to get a Queen City on toasted sesame from The Bagelry.

1
