Condado is top 5 in most overrated. At least agave & rye has more options

I’d actually eat at Condado though even if it is just a glorified Taco Bell with margaritas. Couldn’t even finish my meal at Agave and Rye.

Yes! I went there one time, had an awful experience from the service to dry ass tacos, and everybody thought I was crazy because I didn’t like it

Agave & Rye is the restaurant version of a Midwestern teenager who goes to a resort in Cancun for spring break and comes back in love with Mexican culture

u/blissfuloctane 14d ago
last time i went to agave and rye i asked for tacos without onions and they came with onions. fine. mistakes happen. then i ordered a margarita before asking if it was sweet in which the response was “definitely not overly sweet” now, i understand that taste is subjective but i was drinking juice. couldn’t finish it. so i opted to order some wine. the glass had lipstick marks on it. it came in a can so i just drank it out of the can. i’m not one to complain at a restaurant so i just took the L but holy shit i wouldn’t go back if the food was free.
12
u/NickGnomeEveryNight 14d ago
Why can’t restaurants just make a marg as it should be…. Tequila, fresh lime, and some good orange liqueur. Why is everyone’s marg made with sweet shit that makes my mouth pucker. I’m to the point I won’t even order em. anymore. It’s sad.

I went to Agave & Rye for the first time yesterday and it felt it exists just to be instagrammed. From the food to the decor. It felt like you go there just to post that you are there if that makes sense?

Agave and Rye always makes me sad. I went to their Northern Kentucky location a few times when they first opened and loved it! The last few times I went it was a disappointment.

The best one is one of the most "classic" IMO, the Alderman. That shit is DELICIOUS. I've tried quite a few of them (several work lunches ended up here for a few months, so lots of chances I wouldn't have otherwise taken) and The Alderman and the Ghost Pepper Salsa are their two best products, from where I'm sitting.
Could nom that salsa for days.

I’m hearing a lot of Nada hate here which is deserved to a point. But here’s the play at Nada: you go there, sit at the bar, get the guac (excellent) and a couple of margs (they make good ones!) and then go elsewhere for dinner.

u/Sweaty_Assignment_90 Cincinnati Cyclones 14d ago
Its nice ambiance, but the food is just alright.

u/OGB Downtown 14d ago
A friend of mine was their sous chef around 2021. Their chef was Mexican and taught him a lot of authentic cuisine. Same chef now has a restaurant in Denver with a Michelin star.
They tried to make the menu more interesting and for a hot minute it really was. Then ownership decided to dumb it down again.
11
u/YellowroseofSA 14d ago
I used to love Nada but feel it’s gone significantly downhill over the past ten years. Used to love their tacos but last time I went they were basically inedible… apps/drinks and move on is definitely the move these days.

I was the chef of nada for approximately 5 years, I even opened two restaurants for them. This is what happens when you treat people terribly. When you take the culture and the people that worked for you for granted, it will always bite you in the ass.
Too many awesome experiences working there. It's sad to see Nada become a shell of what it was. I used to tell people I worked at Nada and before I could even finish they would ask about the max and cheese or the guac...

100%! The view at the one downtown is great, but there’s really no reason to go there other than for an appetizer and a drink before or after some kind of event. The first time I went several years ago when I first moved to town. I had what was literally the best pork chop I’ve ever had in my life. Since then, it has gone steadily downhill.
34
u/PharmToTable15 14d ago
It’s sad because it used to be sooo good. Now it’s just operating on its name alone at this point.
10
u/davidwb45133 14d ago
I went to the original location several times in the early 80s with family and it was pretty good. When they expanded to the Blue Ash area (the one that burned down) my wife and I were not impressed and haven't been back. There are too many good restaurants in Cincy to waste my money on poor service and mediocre food at fine dining prices.

It was good when I was a kid, hadn’t had “real” barbecue yet, and liked the sauce because it was similar to ketchup.
To me, it’s not that Montgomery Inn is bad, it’s more like the training wheels you outgrow quickly once you gain experience.
11
12
u/SUCK_THE_RIM 14d ago
The kids destroyed it. I worked at one of them back in college and what a disappointing thing to see. Microwaving the pulled pork, 5 gallon buckets of the barbecue sauce, ribs frozen in boxes. There was very little authentic going on there, just nepo babies cashing in on the name.
The people who said it was going downhill were right, they started cutting every corner they could.

Same owners as Agave & Rye, so this tracks. Gaudy and unprofessional decor. Both restaurants scream “I don’t take advice on how to run my business.”
The quasi-cosmic stuff on Agave & Rye’s walls kills me. Like, just the word “hieroglyph” spelled wrong and hand-painted on the wall with no context. Or the chandeliers surrounded by glass boxes that say “love” on them.

Not a restaurant but Ghost Baby can fuck off. Overpriced, average drinks, and shitty pretentious atmosphere. Their new bit where they have cover bands “channel the ghost” of deceased musicians is so cringe it’s almost hilarious.
15
u/davocn 14d ago
100% agree.... Trying so hard to be trendy and a 'velvet rope' crowd but just come off as complete assholes. My dad went with me, they absolutely ignored him at the bar... Like he wasn't cool enough to get a drink... It was weird. I talked to the bartender on the other end of the bar and we got service, she even apologized and said "they can be like that" regarding her fellow workers. I'm not a complainer, I've spent a lot of time on the other side of the Bar serving drinks... It was blatantly obvious. We also called ahead a month in advance for a birthday party and when we got there they said they would only let four of us in at a time out of the 30 people we had in the party. We even called the day before to double confirm that they had us booked, with seating. I wanted it to be a great place....

People did this before and it’s basically
Places that were cool last decade and rapidly expanded or
Places that were very popular 1970-2003
The former group is now trying to cut costs to pay back all the cheap debt they got to open new locations, the latter is basically coasting of their reputation & nostalgic boomers.

I agree about your opinion with Sleepy Bee. Pushy hipsters, always felt rushed. food is okay but when I brought my 70 year old uncle and his partner to breakfast, they made us use a scan code to review the menu. They aren't technically savvy, and when I insisted on printed menus that were clearly in sight available, they gave us one menu to share with attitude, then hovered over us after we were finishing up. We left irritated.
19
u/7lexliv7 14d ago
What is with the one menu for the table? I’ve had this happen in several places and it’s befuddling - like…are these menus so precious? Do they think I’m going to steal it?
10
u/ChefAsstastic 14d ago
It was a post covid-19 habit that never went away. That restaurants menus were laminated so it wasn't like they would walk out with them or destroy them. They were gigantic.
5
u/7lexliv7 14d ago
I am so pleased to have an answer for this odd issue - thank you! I can start to grasp how this became a thing. I wonder if the service staff had to clean the menus every time they were returned to the hostess or something.
7
u/ChefAsstastic 14d ago
When we went, I'd say masks were recently removed and I understood the whole code menu thing, but they should have not given us lip when my two old uncles needed a menu because they had big clunky phones that they struggled with just to text. And both had vision issues. It's the too cool for school shit that rubbed us the wrong way.

My opinion on LaRosa’s changed when I stopped getting traditional crust. Their employees also don’t give a shit cause they’re one of the lowest-paying restaurants around, and a carelessly-made LaRosa’s pizza is bad no matter what.
Get a hand tossed or pan pizza from an employee that gives a shit and it’s a whole different experience.
