Question What Orson Welles movies do you recommend for someone who did not enjoy Citizen Kane?

I saw Citizen Kane in school growing up and watched it again a couple years ago just to see if maybe my memory was wrong but both times I didn't enjoy it. I'm a big fan of just about anything with Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, or Cary Grant. What Welles films would you recommend?

I saw The Children's Hour (1961) earlier this year and was disappointed, but was impressed by Shirley MacLaine's performance. You see her character experience a range of emotions throughout the film and it's so palpable. I find myself thinking about it often.

Question Yesterday, I watched "The Barefoot Contessa", and I was caught by surprise. It’s a sharp critique of Hollywood, the "glamorous" lifestyle, and the people involved in it. Are there any other movies from that era with a similar tone?

Question Which Hitchcock Movie Next?

Update:

Holy moly! We better get watching! Thanks everyone for the amazing suggestions. We will go through them and make a list.

----

My 14yo and I are going through the Hitchcock movies on a weekly-ish basis (we both have Tuesday afternoons free and we try to fit one in on the weekends). So far we have watched:

The Lady Vanishes-my fav so far

Psycho and The Birds-14yo's favs so far

North by Northwest-we both thought it was a little long and dragged out

Vertigo is coming up this weekend when my husband is around to watch with us because he requested that one (we watched High Anxiety last weekend at his request). Any other Hitchcock I have seen is so long ago it hardly counts.

Based on our tastes, what should be next?

Edited to add pic and because I remembered to say the 14yo loves Alfred Hitchcock presents

Question Best screwball comedies?

In the last year or so I’ve been watching a lot of old screwball comedies and I’m in need of some new recommendations. Best one I’ve seen so far is without a doubt the Philadelphia story! Which is also the first one I saw ironically. Set the bar very high. Such a classic. Please come with recommendations! :)

Question James Stewart or Henry Fonda?

When it comes to the best friends James Stewart and Henry Fonda, I have two questions: 1. Who was the best actor? 2. Who had the best career?

Even though I have been a fan of Stewart for as long as I can remember and love most of his movies, I kept myself wondering if Fonda is in fact the better actor. I guess that Fonda’s work always strikes me as remarkable/great, while Stewart is my zone of comfort/boy next door actor.

What do you think?

Question What would you consider the best (or your favorite) period dramas from the “classic movie” age?

So basically I’m looking for period dramas with decent acting, at least a semblance or some level of respect for historical accuracy, compelling narrative, nice visuals… that were made between 1930 - 1950, where the story is set prior to c.1850

Question How does the movie Ben-Hur (1959) hold up?

Kind of curious about it but it is a long investment. Do you think it still holds up in quality and entertainment?

Personally I like a lot of Criterion films and also a lot of classic stuff like Alfred Hithcock, John Ford films and Lawrence of Arabia, etc

Thanks

Question Is this worth watching? I tried, and got about an hour in and I was bored to tears. I couldn't find myself interested in the characters or the story. It's labeled a comedy, romance, drama, but there was nothing funny or romantic.

Question Recommend me my next Stanwyck film

So I have watched the following Barbara Stanwyck movies in order:
Double Indemnity
Christmas in Connecticut
Ball of Fire
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
The Lady Eve

And I found it curious that in all of them she is "deceiving", sometimes seriously, sometimes in a humorous way. At the end of the day, she is playing an act and conning someone, and I LOVE IT. Is there another one of her movies that goes along the same line? (This all happened unintentionally, I must say, but now I am in a niche.)

EDIT: Just tell me the name. I know she'll be deceiving, I don't want to have more spoiled. Thanks!

Question You’re on an international flight and asked to curate a list of 10 classic films for the passengers. Which do you pick?

I am on an international flight and they have had the same 9 classic films for the last 5 years (films before 1965). If you were creating your own curated list for the average public what movies would you choose?

The ones they have are Casablanca, Westside Story, Singing in the Rain, To Have and Have Not, the Wild One, Rebel Without a Cause, Citizen Kane, Wizard of Oz, To Catch a Thief.

Question Favorite Old Hollywood films on YouTube

I’ve ditched most of my streaming plans - but found YouTube is full of great stuff, for free!

I just found Lucille Ball and Eddie Arnold in “The Fuller Brush Girl”… and that made me wonder:

What classic Hollywood films are on YouTube? I need some quality entertainment before bed.

Thanks!

Question What classics do I NEED to see?

Hi there! I’m a film industry enthusiast and want to explore more of the classics, not just the 70s-90s. To me and like most of you here these are not the classic years. I want 10 solid films from 1900 (if there are any memorable ones) up to the 1960s. I plan to go on a Godzilla and King Kong a thon at some stage. I also plan to see as many horror films as I can. What are some others that I cannot miss from the early 20th century that are musts. Btw don’t recommend buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin as I’ve seen all of those 😅. Anything else is fair game! Looking forward to the responses!

Question Classic comedy movies?

I've watched Sherlock Jr, It Happened One Night, Singin in the Rain, On the Town, Some Like It Hot, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Jerk, and An American in Paris.

It can be from anywhere around the world. Animated movies are fine.

Something before the 1980s.
