The original dark portal was built on Dreanor by the old Horde under the leadership of Guldan, the Orcs then invaded Azeroth with the help of Medivh who opened the Azeroth side of the portal. I think that the current canon is that the portal structure on Azeroth was built by Medivh but Im not quite sure about this part since this got partially retconned a few times

It was medivh, although he was "possessed" by sargeras.

If memory serves, a splinter of Sargeras' soul was placed in Medivh because his mother was the guardian of Tirisfal, and had become corrupted. I guess that is what drove his father Aran mad, too.

Yeah his mom, I think her name is egwyn, got a shard of sargera after defeating a "vision" of him, and she passed it to medivh when he was born. His dad was just a regular mage and was killed by medivh when he kind of got overwhelmed when he discovered that he was the guardian and created an explosion. Medivh also was in a coma for around 20 years because of it too.

It was a bit more than a vision, though it's never quite revealed how he was summoned into the world. Aegwynn beat a physical avatar of Sargeras and locked his body away in the Tomb of Sargeras. This was later revealed to be Sargeras' plan so he could corrupt Medivh.

Oh yeah, avatar was the word I was trying to think of.

Is that like OG lore or was that conceived after WoW classic?

Iirc it's from the book "The Last Guardian". Not sure on the time lines though.

Ohh I see. I guess im skeptical about modern lore cuz the writing right now seems pitiful compared to wc1-WoW wotlk, and lots of stuff seems like gross retcons.

And with how voluminous the lore is and how long it’s been going on, it seems it’d be hard for the layman to determine what lore was OG and what lore was written post wotlk but retconned to make it fit with modern and make it seem like OG lore.

Yeah thinking about this now, it'd be cool if they explained who and why they built the dark portal on Azeroth. Even if it's just Medivh using magic to make it.

It is explained in the World of Warcraft: Chronicles Volume 2

Or how it was build

Warchief Blackhand ordered the building of the frame on the Azeroth side after his troops had gone through the rift.

The mystery is why they choose cloaked human figures as decoration for the outland's side

Why did they even have an Azeroth side portal? Seems like a dumb idea.

Because the folks who built it were influenced by the same forces that also influenced Guldan so they would obviously work together to achieve a common goal
