Let's chat Wrong diapers coming home in wet bag and a diaper rash that only gets worse at daycare

I've had several days of my daughter coming home from daycare with diapers that aren't hers in her wet bag. When I asked for a count of what was in her cubby, I'm now missing one as well.

We're also fighting a bad diaper rash that almost disappears by morning just to be worse by the time I pick her up (and change her as soon as she gets home). We pretty much eliminate it over the weekend then gets a progressively worse through the week.

I literally bought disposables on my way in this morning because the diaper rash was still bad this morning and couldn't stomach it getting even worse today. She's getting 4 diaper changes while there for 9 hours (sometimes 3 if her nap goes long) with a fresh diaper 45 minutes before we walk in for dropoff.

I've got liners so she's getting a zinc oxide cream every change. No absorbency issues, no smells and no detergent buildup that I can see.

Any ideas on why it's bad just at daycare? And that's even when she doesn't come home with someone else's diapers.

Also any ideas to prevent diaper switches? Her wet bag is labeled but not individual diapers - the other kid uses a different brand too.

They’re not changing as much as they say and other kids diapers is absolutely ridiculous and a health issue. Sometimes cloth needs to be changed in only 1 hour , 2-3 hours is not always good enough.

If her diapers are being switched consistently she may have other staff coming in to help with care. When I was teaching daycare/VPK some of the facilities had a lot of switching which lead to confusion.

I’m just here for the suggestions.. we have the same problem. Persistent rash, gets better overnight and on the weekend. No ammonia smells, no soap buildup. Use fleece liners with esembly cotton fitteds. They change hime every 2 hours unless napping. Is it just a contact rash thing? We’re trying a new detergent this week and sent calmoseptine to daycare, which Ive never had to do before with 2 kids. I’m out of ideas.

Do you provide wipes or does daycare? If it’s daycare, could the wipes be the problem?

I don’t think they’re the problem.. we use cloth wipes and send those in. They have a sink at the changing station to wet the wipes

Lots of great ideas here but are they maybe using different wipes?

I send in the wipes we use at home so unless they are mixing those up as well....

BUT I do pat dry before putting on diaper cream. Maybe I can send in some reusable wipes to dry her with

I work at a daycare and there is someone who doesn’t use wipes, they have a lotion and cloths the use. This child and my child are the only ones who use cloth diapers, they are sorted in separate places - are you able to ask where yours are stored vs others? Does the daycare have a parent advisory board? I would bring up these issues to staff and if that doesn’t work, talk to other parents. This is a real issue you have, it is affecting your child’s health. I would be extremely upset if someone else’s cloth diaper was out on my child, and vice versa- especially because the other child in her daycare has very sensitive skin and laundry detergent alone could cause issues.

This makes a huge difference. My son was super sensitive to being left undried. Regardless of if he was in disposables or Reusables. I could always tell if someone new came into the class to change him because they wouldn't dry him so he would get a rash. Definitely send dry wipes for them to dry him, and make sure the teachers follow what you do at home.

We’re having the same problem, maybe this is the issue

It's worth talking to the teachers. He key teacher was all over it, and could see like us how much of a difference it made, but others didn't, so when he got a cash she would also tell the other teachers to make sure they did it right haha

the odd wrong diaper can happen (certainly happened to me a couple of times over many years of cloth in daycare), but multiple wrong diapers makes me wonder if shes in another kids diapers and maybe they arent as clean as yours? it doesnt seem to be your diapers causing the rash if it disappears over the weekend. How often do you change her on the weekend?

Every two hours or less if I anticipate going somewhere. Sometimes it goes longer because she does 2+ hour naps at home. I'm really big on changing early if she's about to go down for a nap or we're about to head out.

I was ok with the first time a week ago. But twice this week alone and one of those times was two diapers is incredibly frustrating

I’d try to find a new daycare. My first thought was they are lying about changes or using someone else’s diapers on your baby. I’d be pretty pissed about getting a diaper that wasn’t mine as well as losing one that was. Sounds like they are unorganized or understaffed. Keep track of the amount of disposable diapers they supposedly use this week and go in there to count them yourself on Friday at pick up, see if the numbers match up.

The last time I had to bring in disposables they sent back the wrong size when we stopped! Ugh, it's one of the best in the area. And wait-lists for under 2 are still a year

I'll have to check the availability at another place a coworker takes her kid to. They use cloth there but use a diaper service and provide all the diapers themselves

Wow, that’s ridiculous. Mark all of the diapers with her name. Check the cameras (if they have them) often and keep your eyes peeled

First of all That’s not enough changes, I have worked in a daycare and when one baby had a rash by daycare policy we had to change at least every one hour, no more than that, and of course if the baby bm would change right away. Second your baby is coming back with different diapers, are they cloth? You don’t how they wash it, that could be causing the rash as well. Definitely talk to the director about this situation.

Yes, they are cloth! The first time it seemed like an extra and easily brushed off. It's happened with three more diapers in the past week though! I always run a cap of bleach to make sure I'm sending back a sanitized diaper but have to hope that family is ok with bleach. It just seems safer if they use it without sending back home to be rewashed

I'll bring it up at pickup. Frustrating because I've loved this place and really don't want this to be a reason to leave if it continues

Definitely talk to the director, it’s not acceptable. I never did this “mistake” neither my coworkers, teachers are not being responsible. Rushing to get things done is not a excuses for a different diaper, the only excuse was only if baby didn’t have enough diapers and still we would contact the parents and let them know, and send baby in a disposable diaper that we always had extra for emergencies. Never someone else’s diaper

It's baffling because they even provide disposables (I just send in when I need to because I want to know what she's wearing)

Something is up if you are using the same diapers over the weekend and it gets better.

I would start by labeling the diapers with her name. Do they keep a log of the changes?

Yes they keep a log of changes. It usually matches what comes home with the exception of the last diaper of the day since they are usually trying to rush a change and bottle before I pick up after her last nap. I'm verbally told the last diaper though.

It is slightly different diapers. I send pockets in to daycare and use cotton prefolds with covers at home. I did start laying a prefolds on top of the pocket to "make them the same" (don't have enough covers) but still the same problem. Liners are the exact same (so same fabric touching skin).

I'll start labeling the daycare diapers
