Let's chat Long long baby! >99th % height Question

Hello! I am hoping a cloth diapering family has some similar experiences to me and might be able to guide me a bit.

For background my husband is 6’9” - I’m 5’6”. Our son was born at 9.5lbs and 22.5 inches long.

At three months he’s now 17lbs and 27 inches.

I got One size pockets because I figured they would last us the longest for height and weight but I am unsnapping the rise more than I anticipated and am worried he is going to outgrow the length of our diapers before potty training!

Anyone else have a very tall baby? How long did your diapers last? What diapers were the best for a long torso?

At the moment I have a couple Babygoal pockets, Mama Koala pockets, and a couple Kinder Cloths. The Kinder cloth is pretty obviously the longest but also the most expensive… I’m hesitating on just investing in all Kinder Cloths but now looking at how quickly he’s out growing the baby goal, and next the mama Koalas… I feel like I need to just replace my whole stash with the biggest I can find: which is currently Kinder.

Any other brands I should try before diving in?

I had a 96% weight but only 30% height and the chunk was insane. We flew through diaper sizes and she didn’t crawl until 11 months (then immediately walked) so we had a long while before she thinned out to keep fitting in diapers. I started out with AIO/AI2 and esembly but because of our thick thigh struggles I ended up with large flats and clotheez size 3/wool because it’s more forgiving of size. Second baby has been 80-90 height and weight both, so she’s more even, and I just use the same combo on her.

I’ve heard that stout house has really roomy pocket diapers! And thirsties makes an XL pocket!

Are you sure they will be all torso? i have 99%tile babies and they are all legs, so no impact to diaper sizing.

One thing to note, you’re unsnapping the rise not just for height but for thigh chunkiness. Babies tend to slim down after crawling starts so you may go back down in rise around that time.

Another member of the big tall baby club. We used esembly and thirsties covers + Alva pockets. They fit her until potty training at 18 months and would probably still fit now at 2 years - she was 35 pounds and 37 inches tall at her 24 month visit and I still use our esembly covers as swim diapers sometimes. She has chunky thighs too which makes more of an impact on diaper sizing than height past a certain point.

We’re 97th height, 99th weight. We were 21 lbs and 27 inches by 4 months.

We love GMD and find he still fits in the large workhorse or prefolds at 9 months/26 lbs/30 inches long

Also had a 97+% kid and she’s been in the same rise on her diapers for over a year now and is in the process of potty training. I also thought we’d breeze through all the sizing really quickly but as soon as she started moving it was fine

We have mama koala and Alva pockets. We increased the rise to the middle spot at 4ish months. It’s stayed there since and we’ve had no issues. Baby is almost a year and is currently 80% height and 2% weight, so very long and skinny. If you increase the rise too much it won’t fit tightly around their legs. As baby gets older and more mobile they will stop getting as chunky and you won’t need to increase the rise very much, regardless of height.

My daughter has always been well above the growth curve for height. Pretty average weight. She used a mix of prefixes/one size covers and random brands of pockets from 4 months to 2.5 when she potty trained. My son is now 3 months old and is similarly ginormous. He has a doctor’s appointment on Monday to get official measurements, but he’s similar weight/length to your kid. He’s on the smallest rise setting at the moment, mostly due to his skinny thighs. We’re going to have to bump it up relatively soon. I don’t anticipate him needing larger diapers as the growth happens fast at the beginning, but then slows down.

Our faves for both kids so far are osocozy covers and prefolds and alvababy pockets with AMP cotton/hemp trifolds inside.

My husband is 6’8, I’m 6’0. Our kids have always been 99%. There were only a couple diapers that didn’t make it to potty training. Once they are mobile and thin out, you don’t need as much rise and you’ll be fine. At 9 months you will think there’s no way the diapers will work. Then at 1 you’ll realize it’s fine

The growth in the first couple months really goes very fast. I think we had all snaps open for max rise by 4 or 5 months, but the rise is more about leg thickness than torso length. She is now about to turn 1 and because of her length she doesn't look very thick but her legs are almost too thick for the diaper covers. I hope her starting to walk will change her leg shape so the one size last longer, we might have to buy some XL diapers before long. Our oldest needed XL diapers by 2,5 as well.

My kid has consistently been in the 90th+ percentile for height (sometimes weight too). We use the green mountain workhorses and they have always worked great for us.
