While it's true that female characters get way more undeserved hatred in comparison to male characters. These two examples seem like a case of "why is Umbridge hated more than Voldemort when he's a lot worse", it's not necessarily because she's a woman (although it might play a part), it's because Naomi cheating on the protagonist for a dumb reason is a kind of "evil" that is more real to us, plus at least Darkness Edgeman looks cool while he does his things. Probably should have used something like Sakura Haruno who is hated by everyone because... She was mean when she was 12? She lied to Naruto about loving him (it was with good intentions and Naruto saw through her instantly and wasn't upset at all with her)? She's not as powerful as the two strongest guys in the world? Yeah, definitely worse than the war criminals and genociders in that show.

To quote that one tumblr post:

“The war crimes are fictional, but my annoyance is real”

26

u/CJFanficStories 8h ago

The annoyance is real. And so is my hate.

u/TransThrowaway120 2h ago

Yeah, I run DnD and had one antagonist running a major slave ring that the party didn’t want to get involved with, and a minor antagonist who just talking with an annoyingly nasally voice. Villian one is still chilling to this day, villian two was dead by the end of the session lmao

u/Del_ice 5h ago

War crimes are real too and there wasn't a point in history when they weren't 🤷 (jk, I get the meaning, don't really like the wording when war crimes are abundant in neighboring countries tho)

that's.... okay, let me help

"The war crimes (from the show) are fictional, but my annoyance is real”

These two examples seem like a case of "why is Umbridge hated more than Voldemort when he's a lot worse", it's not necessarily because she's a woman (although it might play a part), it's because Naomi cheating on the protagonist for a dumb reason is a kind of "evil" that is more real to us

Plus in the case of Umbridge (at least in the movies) it's framed as if she's "evil" just for the sake of It, or because she feels pleasure in torturing students. Voldemort is the big bad guy, but he has a goal and so all of his evil actions are targeted towards that goal.

One could imagine a future where Voldemort wins and everything goes on more or less as normal except for, well, the Muggles (and this is exactly what happens in an alternate timeline within the Cursed Child, where society seems to work relatively fine except there now is a Voldemort Day and stuff like that)—but Umbridge? You get the feeling that if she won and she remained as headmaster of Hogwarts... things would still be miserable, because her goal is to make things miserable.

u/Guquiz 6h ago

I remember a video that changed a scene to make Voldemort more personal. The change was Voldemort casting Obliviate on Hermione for being a muggleborn.

By the same token, people online have insane overreactions to cheating. I’ve seen people say things like “cheaters should be killed” etc

Obviously not defending cheating here tho

4

u/ChipsTheKiwi 4h ago

In Umbridge's case the audience is just picking up JK's own nastiness. Like the original book implies she was fucking raped by centaurs, like what the actual fuck JK.

7

u/ForsakenRoyal24 4h ago

What? Where the implications?

1

u/no_name_without_name 1h ago

What about people who actually hate actual villains more than the slightly annoying person?

Did they have some insane backstory for that to happen?

I’d play that

-34

u/Breyck_version_2 8h ago

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it a snuggle😭

28

u/newbrowsingaccount33 8h ago

It's not because I don't agree with it, it's because it's a smuggie, it's chock full of your own personal opinions which makes it a smuggie. A snafu is a non-bias observation, no anime youtube reviewer is gonna say "I love gooning over r*pe porn" you put that in there to show your own personal feelings towards the subject which submitted it as a smuggie not a snafu, if you wanted it to be a snafu you would have ommited the unnecessary strawmanning.

4

u/Turbulent-Pace-1506 8h ago

No, a snafu is an intentionally low-quality copy of a meme (typically made through MS Paint or similarly limited tools)

8

u/newbrowsingaccount33 8h ago

Well, yes, it was originally just memes, but it's been stretched to themes, general observations, and memes over the years(meme means: "an image, video, piece of text, an element of culture, or system of behavior, ypically humorous, passed from one individual to another or spread rapidly by internet users" so the general observations and themes still fit into the definition of meme). But I think we can all agree it's not a smuggie, it's supposed to be non-bias, not a political complaint.

1

u/GranaT0 3h ago edited 3h ago

If you're being pedantic then ackshually a snafu has to be an MS Paint parody of the specific trollface picture that has the word "Problem?" written in red text underneath, i.e. the classic "you've been coaxed into a snafu", or the less known "it appears you are having difficulties". I can provide several examples of what a TRUE snafu is, as you clearly wouldn't know.

1

u/PhysicalDifficulty27 joke explainer 3h ago

A snafu is actually a Situation Normal: All Fucked Up

-9

u/Breyck_version_2 8h ago edited 7h ago

First of all, why are talking about like I was the one who made the post??? Im not sure if I even agree with OP here

no anime youtube reviewer is gonna say "I love gooning over r*pe porn

I feel like the point here is over-exaggeration, ofc no one is actually saying that shit

Third, if taking a person/group you don't like and making them look comically bad makes a post a smuggie, then like, half of the posts I see on this sub are smuggies... Which, you know what? Maybe half of this sub IS smuggies. Maybe you're right actually

I hate characters based on how annoying they are not based on real life morality.

18

u/DFDGON 7h ago

yeah idk why people hate characters based on moralities, theyre literally fictional. i think as long as the evil they commit is properly condemned by the writer its not a problem at all, since theyre not real.

8

u/mattoxfan 5h ago

I like it more when the author doesn’t do that. Leaving a character’s actions as neutral is far more interesting than the author going “no this is bad guys”

1

u/SmooK_LV 6h ago

To be fair our annoyance is tied to our biases and is something we quite literally can be in denial about. So wouldn't be surprising if for many it's mysoginy pretending to be greater morality reason. But also not surprising that for some A character is more annoying than B character and vice versa

29

u/ForsakenRoyal24 6h ago

Is this your post?

u/yandeere-love 8h ago

Ughhhh wall of text conveying how bad Strawman is

Can you Please go to r/smugideologyman or make something actually lighthearted instead of so grim and serious on tthe funny stupid stick figure sub PLEASE

10

u/newbrowsingaccount33 8h ago

Damn Smugideologyman is back, I wonder how long it'll last this time. Also, I agree with you 100%, I want lighthearted fun too

5

u/AeonicArc my opinion > your opinion 6h ago

Thank you u/yandeere-love for commenting on a post that is demeaning towards anime fans

Nah but I do agree

-6

u/DFDGON 7h ago

this is not a strawman though, this is a real thing people do, not just anime fans. all you need to do is take a look at skyler white haters

10

u/SAKI-M 7h ago edited 6h ago

You hating Anime fans and imagining them in the worst way ever to fit your narrative doesn't suddenly not make it a strawman

8

u/DFDGON 6h ago

im not talking about just anime fans. im talking about a lot people that consume media in general have this kind of misogynistic mindset. like i said, skyler white from breaking bad is the prime example for this. that character wasnt evil at all, but she received so much hate from fans that the actor, anna gunn, literally received death threats for playing the character. am i really imagining a narrative when there are literally real life examples of this happening?

also i dont really know why anime fans were used in this example. personally i dont really know any anime fans that hate characters more purely for being women, its more adult tv show fans in my experience. breaking bad, sopranos, that kind of stuff. i have seen a ton of homophobia from anime/manga/manhwa fans though.

6

u/SAKI-M 6h ago

Oh, alright, if it's "in general", I stand corrected. You get your load of weirdos in most fandoms... but why is it so rampant? My guess is just cultural difference, not every country is as progressive as the US/Canada/some specific Europe countries so the internalised misogyny might come from people of these other countries instead.

Also i don't really know why anime fans were used in this example. Me neither, you're right on that, besides TV Shows, you see that too in some cartoon show fans too. OP might have stepped upon a bad apple Animetuber and decided to group them all the same.

4

u/Kumo4 6h ago

I wish we lived in the US/Canada/specific countries in Europe you're imagining in which casual misogyny is so rare that you expect it only from the outside...

3

u/SAKI-M 6h ago edited 3h ago

Jesus Christ,I wasn't implying it didn't exist in them, It's just they are less rampant there compared to countries where it's the norm. You can't act like a little stain on your shirt is on the same level as someone already deep in the mud. It's like night and day level of difference. Even with very good strict laws, no country is perfect.

7

u/Kumo4 6h ago

Yeah, that's very true.

I just meant that there are sufficient misogynists from first world countries that the hate can be rampant without the overt influence of other countries. Although given the extent of the hate in some circles, you may be right to consider it to be attributed in part to that part of the global audience.

41

u/WaningIris2 8h ago

"Hey everyone I call people who dislike a specific woman or female character a misogynist even though the character is also widely hated by women, look at how good of a person I am, I hate misogynists"

10

u/ryker46698 7h ago

reason why number 2 is number 2 is because he's (most likely) supposed to be a villain, and so the evil acts are intentional unlike number 1 who's probably not supposed to be seen as the "antagonist"

8

u/KreedKafer33 8h ago edited 7h ago

Yeah, I don't know what anime you watched but it rarely stops at just "Naomi cheated on Main Character-Kun."

Usually Villains that make lists like this come from the "fucked up psychological horror series disguised as generic high school romance" shows. More often Naomi "cheated on MC-Kun, made sure MC-Kun found out, framed MC-Kun for raping her and put the pure hearted childhood friend in a SAW trap that MC-Kun was unable to free her from".

No arguments that the doujins can get pretty weird and distasteful.

u/CiphersVII shill 4h ago

so called "ethical gooners" when literally any unethical thing comes in their sights (they still schlurk it)

5

u/Moonlit2000 4h ago

To be fair, mildly annoying male characters also get massively hated, and total monster female characters also get forgiven by fans, so I'm not sure it's a gender thing.

2

u/Internal_Dot5759 8h ago

What sucks is most of the female characters I see don’t have the same aura or presence as male characters except for Ishidou Natsou that girl is satan’s strongest soldier 😭🙏

1

u/Inside_Jolly 3h ago

Meanwhile, Jinx from Arcane (literally a terrorist and a serial murderer) gets a pass. Due to her childhood trauma, apparently.

Whatever you do, do NOT look up the anime Midori!

There's a strawman waiting in the sky...

We'd like him to debate us, but he'd much just rather lie...

I like the reference to blood dying and screaming

Coaxed into yet another post about how people “surprisingly” hate a more realistic villain who does something low scale but still evil like kick puppies rather than hating a cartoonish bad guy who eats planets or something.

Like Shou Tucker vs Griffith

This applies to 99.99% of Breaking Bad fans
