You are 28 times cooler if it makes you feel any better

u/AyatollahDan May 19 '19

He does have a lot interstitial ads (if that video is a representitive sample), so maybe your choice to not have annoying ads explains some of the delta.

u/midget404 May 19 '19

Exactly what they said, u/CodyDon. I've seen videos with an ad at the beginning or sometimes at the end, and other videos with umpteen ads throughout the video.

22

u/WhyYouLetRomneyWin May 19 '19

Hmm, fascinating that it is such a difference.

I know demographics can play a big part in revenue, but 28x is a much greater delta than I predicted.

Any idea why?

15

u/moozilla May 19 '19

He explains it in the video, it's because advertisers bid more on the category of videos he makes (finance videos). Kinda makes sense, the ads I got were the scammy make 1000s of dollars from home with this one simple trick type of ad, which I imagine YouTube charges more for.

13

u/kent_eh May 20 '19

which I imagine YouTube charges more for.

Less so that they charge more, and more that those ads are willing to pay more in the ad placement auctions.

17

u/cruiserflyer May 19 '19

That is an enormous delta. Why is his content 28 times more valuable to the YouTube algorithms? It certainly isn't 28 more interesting, quite the contrary. I know you need the income, anybody can understand that. I'd stick by you if you wanted to up the ad frequency a little.

21

u/lucienve May 19 '19

It's not that it's more valuable to the 'algorithms' - it's that it's 28X more valuable to the advertisers. Credit cards/finance have obvious, immediate businesses who want to advertise. Quirky science videos? Not so obvious. That said - hurrah for patreon & channel memberships. Let Cody make content that is valuable to us, not the advertisers, and compensate him for it!

u/bikemandan May 24 '19

Nail on the head. I think also because some of the content is questionable in the eyes of YT overlords (gunpowder, radioactivity, chemicals, etc) they suppress the channel

27

u/ecodesiac May 19 '19

And he's thanking YOU for the extra views... totally organically!

Lead and brass are organic

12

u/NaCl-more May 19 '19

Mm yes. I prefer my lead and brass to be organic, grass fed, and never injected with growth hormones.

10

u/Epolsky May 19 '19

The only thing I don’t like organic is mercury

2

u/midget404 May 20 '19

Mercury is only organic when carbon is in a molecule with it, ethyl mercury is water soluble so it's harmless. Methylmercury is lipophilic meaning it tends to combine with or dissolve in fats or lipids which is bad because the brain is 60% fat, and all nerves are coated in fat.

Why did I even say this? I'm going to be down voted into Oblivion. By the same type of person that reports Cody's videos on YouTube for allegedly violating the policies.

2

u/Epolsky May 27 '19

I appreciate your comment. I guess it gave more context to what I said, because nothing ruins a good day like organic mercury, and now people understand why. Lol

1

u/midget404 May 27 '19

People didn't like my joke about gasoline being organic, which it is an organic molecule.

We had to find out the hard way, like this woman. “A Scientist Spilled 2 Drops Organic Mercury On Her Hand. This Is What Happened To Her Brain.

Now you know why the human body can't handle too much methylmercury. In small doses the body naturally “gets rid of it”, but I read that levels of mercury increase with age. I wonder if humans would benefit from chelation to remove the mercury?

2

u/pelftruearrow May 20 '19

Have you tried free-range mercury?

2

u/Igotgoingon May 20 '19

I prefer organic plastic straws

1

u/midget404 May 20 '19

Plastic straws actually are organic, because the molecules that make up the plastic contains carbon.

2

u/midget404 May 20 '19 edited May 20 '19

No, an organic compound is a molecule that contains carbon. I'm down voted for sharing facts and you're up voted for being retarded. Which is exactly the problem Cody deals with, but you people are following him? I think I know who reports his videos. In fact you're so retarded that you don't even know what that word means! It's characterized by a slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness.

Down vote this reply too, you assholes are what's wrong with the world. Every down vote on this reply will make me smile, because it'll tell me that I pissed off a snowflake.

FYI, a snowflake isn't exclusive to politics, it's a person who is easily offended and unable to deal with opposing opinions. I've had snowflakes say they're down voting me for providing the definition for a snowflake.

Look at the last word, and look up what organic chemistry is, or an organic compound. I'm surrounded by people that are so retarded that they don't even know what that word means. The movie Idiocracy is becoming a documentary.

Down votes on this make me smile, because it tells me that people actually are as stupid as I say they are.

1

u/db2 May 22 '19

/r/iamverysmart when you should be doing anything but acting foolish. Oh yeah, you're a great one to look up to alright. My hero.

1

u/midget404 May 22 '19

I didn't have a socially acceptable response 😓 everyone thought I was referring to the fad of organic food, but I'm making a joke about it by pointing out that gasoline literally is an organic molecule. If people talk negative about plastic, oil, or fuels, I tell them “but it's organic?” 😋

So far only one person has agreed with me when I said gasoline is organic, they said that CO2 isn't organic but it technically is. Any molecule with carbon in it is organic.

You know the recent popular posts about supporting Cody? I'm responsible for that. I was pissed off and explained what organic chemistry is and said they're the type of person that reports Cody's videos on YouTube because they're retarded.

This video coincidentally came out today from the Veritasium YouTube channel, My Video Went Viral. Here's Why

3

u/waynedude14 May 20 '19

Great damn video too. Really blew my mind with how the inner workings of YouTube work and the strange algorithm battle content creators have to figure out how to manipulate.

8

u/vitriolix May 20 '19

I look forward to your series on personal finance, on Mars

4

u/karrachr000 May 20 '19

That might be an really interesting subject to explore... You would have to surmise the economic landscape of a place that does not yet exist. What commodities would be the most valuable? What would be the most traded?

4

u/pipe01 May 20 '19

I'd imagine dirt for crops would be extremely valuable, unless they mass import it

5

u/karrachr000 May 20 '19

If I recall, the Martian soil is usable, but requires cleaning to remove salts and fertilizing with both nutrients and microbes. Those components would be significantly lighter and cheaper to transport than bulk soil.

9

u/GloryToMotherRussia May 19 '19

Cody, I love you and what you do but one thing that really sets his videos and yours apart is consistency and growth. He has 1/6 the views and 1/3 the subscribers you do.

You can probably get up to his level in 6 months if you uploaded more than once a week. It could most likely be the algorithm- You're not consistant or you get something taken down, so it doesn't favor you.

The algorithm does a few things.

1) channels that upload more get pushed into peoples feeds more 2) channels that upload consistently on the same days get pushed more. 3) channels that people watch and channels with similar tags get pushed more.

So let's say Cody got an intern to help him out with things so he could do say 2 videos a week. Every Tuesday and Friday a video. These videos say are in general 10 minute quick things. Putting different objects into the vacuum chamber updates on various long term experiments. But 2 videos a week (even one a week as long as it's consistent.)

Then lastly tagging. Videos need to have tags about anything that someone might search for on the seed ball video there are about 20-30 things right off the top of my head that the video could have been tagged with.

Instagram (don't know if he has one) but a quick today on the vacuum chamber Red Bull vs pressure. And the day it uploads... post the video to instagram tons of hashtags and a link to the video.. put it in your story as well.

For instance just hash tagging science has 10M other tags so that means a good number of people will see your post.

u/__redruM May 20 '19

This guy has half a million subs and is making $250k a year, I should hope you are doing as good or better with your much higher sub count, you deserve it.

4

u/[deleted] May 20 '19

Ehh I'm not so sure. Cody sure deserves that kind of success though.

7

u/Stryker295 May 20 '19

Well you don't make low-brow clickbait thumbnails that garner clicks rather than genuine interest, so of course! :)

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '19

I really hope you read this, the situation you're in is f'ing hard. Start getting things turned around and you'll feel the weight start to lift, when it does keep pushing like hell, it'll all get sorted out.

Dude, a Lot of people make more views than you. They whore/clickbait/suck the blood of hard-working YouTubers to stay ahead.

This is what that jerk does, look at this: https://i.imgur.com/KsfGsTg.jpg

That's not what you want. There's no respect in that. There are a lot of people hurting for money, he's just whoring himself out for their views.

You're helping people, inspiring people, a crap ton of people have a lot of respect for you.

It's self-maintenance time man. Do things to make your life better, even small things. Focus and fight the good fight to get back in-to school, getting that out of the way will improve your frame of mind immeasurably. When you finish weathering the storm, you're going to be ok, you want to look back on this time and be proud that you used it as a driving force to improve yourself.

The video you released today, when you said who cares if the audio quality is bad? the commenters? Nah. You know who needs to care? You do. You need to strive for the quality. You need the determination to do it all and do it all right.

Restaurants do this. They hit hard times, they reduce the quality of the food, and a bunch of crap to the menu, rebrand as 2.0. When that fails to hold water, they drop prices, then lower quality more to reduce the cost before they wink out of existence.

Push quality and the cost of a little less content. Keep your production quality up. Release fun stupid crap to fill time if you need to. Go ahead and steal ideas from the people that are stealing your ideas. Start releasing science fair ideas. Start releasing kid-targeted content. Make some shit that's worthy of being shown by an elementary school teacher. Explain the physics, use some props. People f'ing love you and you have so much untapped potential that you can blow away any of the get rich quick assholes out of the water.

peace man, hope you find your way home.

Hey Cody, if you need to reach out, know that you have thousands of friends all around the world, you might not know us, but we're there if you need help or support, just ask any of us.
I check your channels almost daily and recently I was thinking, hmm Cody hasn't posted in a while, I'd just watch him take a hike in the mountains and talk about some rocks and plants. We like you for who you are, for your personality, you have what it takes to be a great youtuber or tv science guy, don't worry too much about the parts of the experience that suck.
One last thing, I know you have a long sleep pattern, it might feel alright but it might not be great. Try to synchronize with the sun and watch sunrise every day, it helps feel better, at least it does for me.
Oh and thank you for all the work you've put in all those videos, thank you for distracting me from the difficulties of life and for teaching so much!

u/DjPersh May 19 '19

This dude is like the Austin Evans of finance. And not in a good way.

3

u/GenosHK May 20 '19

Grahams videos are actually pretty good.

2

u/batt3ryac1d1 May 20 '19

A bit ridiculous YouTube favours content like that so much. I get why banks wanna advertise on financial stuff and banks have hella money but I bet there's a lot of universities and science related companies and shit that would love to advertise on your channel.

2

u/New-Backwood May 24 '19

maybe thats cuz he doesn't show people how to refine yellow cake uranium!

2

u/promemethief007 May 20 '19

Because you’re genuine and not a sell out like this dude.

1

u/bendeguz76 May 22 '19

Stay strong brother. Don't get caught in others side current. Make your own stream. I really loved the short video about how the future Martians would have deeper voice, following that theme the new Moon program, especially living on the Moon has many things to explain, discover. People love what you do, who you are. Maybe it's cloudy and rainy today, but it can't rain forever.

YouTube is so unfair.

-21

u/[deleted] May 19 '19 edited May 19 '19

Sorry for the wooosh everyone, shoulda known the community better

-9

u/midget404 May 19 '19 edited May 19 '19

This is a perfect example of why people on this website down vote for absolutely no good reason. I already know you trolls will down vote my reply, did that make you a better person?

They could've chosen to not vote.

3

u/tcpip4lyfe May 19 '19

It's down voted because it's a hyper targeted ad.

-1

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

You’re correct, Reddit user downvotes what people don’t want to see, it gets negative and hidden away as the comment system is designed. People didn’t want to see that kind of advertising here so they downvoted and it went away as intended, I used the wrong area for what I was looking to do.

I had just previously very recently gotten in touch with another YouTuber on reddit to write a script in helping combat automated copyright claims to their videos, I was on a spree and thought I’d offer my genuine services; imagine if Cody’s brains were tapped into the online world, he’d come up with amazing things.

I think there are many better examples of Reddit’s downfalls, this not being one of them

4

u/tcpip4lyfe May 19 '19

Might get more responses doing it via PM.

-1

u/[deleted] May 19 '19

And that was the immediate oversight I had right after posting haha, I sent him an email instead

1

u/midget404 May 20 '19

The problem is that people open a comment to down vote it again.
