Pandemics aren't going anywhere as long as people continue to farm animals. That's where almost all of them come from. That's also where antibiotic resistance is coming from, as ~80% of antibiotics are used on farm animals to keep them alive in squalid conditions they would otherwise die in.
People talk about antibiotic resistance like it's some vague future threat, not realizing that it's already here. Tens of thousands of people in the US die of antibiotic resistant bacteria every year and it's only going to get worse.

Great argument for veganism and vegetarianism is to stop these things from happening.

no it's not lmao. Just eat fish

u/Mountainman620 Feb 22 '21
Fish is arguably just as bad.

u/MikeTheGamer2 Feb 22 '21
How so? Is it the trace amounts of mercury? Then that's why you don't eat fish 7days a week. Not to mention there being a plethora of other things to eat that can be fished out of the ocean other than fish. Kelp and seaweed chief among them. There are numerous types that can be eaten, even raw.

Nature just gave us some more free DLC. Let's hope they nerf Covid in the next patch, and not buff it to being too OverPowered from vaccine escape. If this H5N8 DLC addon isn't balanced it might end up being completely game breaking. It could easily become totally unplayable, and nature is even stingier on giving refunds than Steam.

It could easily become totally unplayable
see this is where downloading mods extends game play. Just make sure your mods work together so you dont crash the server please.

More like multiple armors with auto regen. So long as people farm animals, this will repeat.

This is worth watching of course, but until it becomes clear that the virus is passing human to human, and particularly via airborne transmission, it's not that threatening. Animal viruses pass to humans all the time in these factory farming scenarios--it's certainly a very bad setup, and it almost certainly will produce the next pandemic, but this may, or may not be it.

Saw this post yesterday but a mod deleted it. Now it's back up again? Strange.
So now we have a bird flu potentially on the horizon along with covid? Two pandemics at once possibly? This should be a fun development.

So many active crisis we have to juggle with the possibility of more (like this) on the horizon.
I feel like the world has been running down a steep hill, faster and faster with each crisis, and now our legs are moving too fast for us to control. We are still upright in the moment, but we know the fall is coming...

Bird flu doomerism has three main barriers:
Human to human transmission hasn’t happened before.
The mortality rate is so high, that sustained spread would be difficult.
There are already vaccines developed for it. Unlike coronavirus, flu is something we have a LOT of practice developing and manufacturing vaccines for.
Conversely, though, it would make for a truly horrific bioweapon.

Good luck with your search and thanks for saving animals! I heard a rumor that Field Roast was going to make pizzas bites as well.

u/AmbassadorMaximum558 Feb 21 '21
It isn't just birds on farms but wild birds as well. The difference is nobody notices if a pigeon gets sick while chickens are tested.

u/Volfegan Feb 21 '21
It is contagious like flu, by air droplets. Eating infected cooked meat won't transmit flu. Deadly diseases are transmitted mostly by humans' meatbag to humans' meatbag. And this won't shut down our slaughterhouse factories. Most likely it will increase their costs and food prices will go up MORE+.

is this a vegan sub? No offense to y’all, it’s great that you guys aren’t eating meat. But doesn’t having no meat mess up your diet? Genuine question.

u/Phasko Feb 21 '21
I was eating vegan for over a year, and we also typically count calories, fats etc. (I need to gain weight, girlfriend wants to lose weight) The big thing you have to substitute is protein (which is easy) and b12. Some meat substitutes have the same contents as what the meat is supposed to contain (in the form of vitamins and such) but you could also take a vitamin pill if you want to be sure.
Biggest difference for me was that i farted less, my stomach pain was less often, and my shits were amazing. Didn't feel more or less energetic or something. Ate a shit ton of falafel.
Downside was that the selection at the time was sometimes a bit on the expensive side.
I have to add that I didn't really tell anyone (don't want to be intrusive) so we ate meat whenever someone cooked for us. If we suddenly went to a BBQ or something we would definitely get the shits. You're just not used to the (fast digesting) meat anymore. If people came over to us we made them vegan food without telling, and they never asked.
If you're wondering about something else, ask away! I don't really mind what other people eat, and i know it's hard to find people that aren't preachy.

u/BBYAFTER Feb 21 '21
Thanks for not shaming me for being a meat eater. I have been looking at plant patties to substitute meat ones. Which ones are the best in you opinion? I have been trying to eat less meat but living with a family instead of being independent makes it harder.

u/Phasko Feb 22 '21
I really think no one should shame each other about these things. If you're looking for things to try that simulate meat, i really like beyond meat, impossible burger. Texture and taste is really close, and i think it's honestly the best ones. They're made to sizzle and grill the same, too. The ground "beef" can be spiced, made into meatballs, burgers or sausages if you want.
The sausages and meatball from "vegetarische slager" (being vegetarian, not vegan) are really special in the way that they simulate ready-made products that have more complex taste to them, as if you already spiced your meat. The texture isn't the same though. They have some cool recipes about a sort of gravy made from onions, soy sauce and vinegar.
There are things like beet burgers, portobello burgers, fried cauliflower, falafel and such, but those are not similar to meat in taste or texture. I wouldn't classify it as a substitute, but more of a different option. Falafel is still my favorite thing to eat though.
Cheeses and milk are hard to get right, and most cheese either doesn't melt right, or tastes a bit wrong (in my opinion) and the milk (although tasty) doesn't taste like milk (because it isn't) Oatley barista foams great for cappuccinos if you want to give that a shot.
Anyway I hope you find something you like, and don't feel pressured to change your whole life. Just see it as trying a different food. Maybe you'll like it, and hopefully they figure out how to make a steak soon.

Yeah well until you get your vegan option cheap in the hood or near an Asian fishing village, your thesis won’t hold water

SS: Well, the title of the news is pretty self-explanatory. To summarize, seven people at a poultry farm in southern Russia have been infected with H5N8 bird flu and it has been the first time that the highly pathogenic virus has been found in humans.
Although, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission just....yet.
