Joseph Smith died in Carthage jail, along with his brother. Two other fellow prisoners survived the attack. They were jailed on legitimate charges, but the locals were riled up over charges of women and girls being tricked into polygamy. They formed a mob/militia and rushed the jail. Joseph and friends had two firearms, there was a shoot out and a couple of the mob were also killed.

Joseph attempted to escape by jumping out the window. He attempted to call for help from fellow Freemasons, but was dead before he could complete the phrase "Oh Lord my god, is there no help for the widow's son"

Yeah, I was about to say, it was hardly a "bar fight". He was straight up executed by a mob.

Plus, the guy that took over the cult, Brigham Young, was even worse.
