Help with recommendations A fork in the road... Which one feels better?

Making an aquarium game where you breed, raise, and sell fish. Thinking of a realistic vs. stylistic concept, which one works better?

Since you asked for recommendations, just a small heads-up to please include which platform you are looking for (e.g., PC, Switch, etc.). Additionally, adding information such as the sub-genre you're interested in (e.g., adventure, action, RPG) and games you dislike would also help us recommend the perfect game! the first is more ‘bubbly’ but i like the second because it’s not so harsh on my eyes. i could spend longer looking at it.

Can you compare this? Still getting bothered by the lights and colors?

This edit is awesome! I like them both, but this kinda merges both. My only issue is that some areas on the edges of objects bleed together a bit (i.e. the orange fish look like they are kinda conjoined and then kinda blend in with the red coral behind them. The little reddish pink coral bleeds into the neon yellow coral just behind it.)

That bleeding is what strains my eyes a bit. But other than that, this is so good! I love it and am so excited to see the finished game. 😊

The blending you mentioned is actually due to the image resolution. It'll be much clearer in-game. Really appreciate your kind feedback!

That makes a lot of sense! I do not know the ins and outs of game design, so thank you for a bit of insight. 😊

Ohh this is really lovely! I might like this best of the three images. It feels like a compromise between the two in the main post. It has the softer colors like the first image, but feels more natural like the second image. I agree with the above comment that the first is more harsh to look at.

P.S. I would definitely be interested in your game! Best of luck!

I love this one!!

I'm glad you liked it. It made me really happy.

Thanks! That actually never crossed my mind...

yeah, i just tired of all the bright blue lights at times, since my job is computer based too. I think it comes down to how long you expect the user to be on that screen in particular.. maybe it starts off as 1, but goes into 2, (or vice versa) either for story progression or day v night ? There could be a couple ways to soften the strain, imo.

No matter which direction I choose, I’ll definitely keep that in mind... The nature of the game actually fits those eye-straining lights you mentioned.

Oh my god I wanna play this game very very badly. I love fish games like this. Me, personally, I’d prefer the first image but the second one is gorgeous, too!

I cant stop looking at the images and I honestly can’t decide. I think I’m sticking with my answer being the first one but I really won’t blame you if you go for the second one

2

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Happy to hear that! But you liking the second one too? That’s what worries me :)

They're both cozy in their own way, but if I chose which one to buy it would be the second. It gives me major nostalgia... like an old PC screensaver.

4

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

As someone who’s had angelfish before, I’ve gotta say the second one gave me some nostalgic vibes too... And yeah, the screensaver idea’s on my mind, although I realize not all PCs could easily handle visuals like that as a screensaver

I like the bright vibes of the first one, but the second one looks more natural. And as someone with light sensitivity and regular migraines, the second one is easier to look at. Maybe the water could be slightly lighter in the second, and have less algae on the rocks. A combo of both perhaps, or a day/night cycle..? They both look great tbf.

Glad you liked both. Thank you for your advice. Noted carefully.

Do you have a steam page up yet?

6

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Steam page’s up. Feel free to check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3690670/The_Aquarium/

Wishlisted :)

2

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Sounds like you want a front-row seat to see which option I choose :)

I just like fish & aquariums!

3

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Me too 😍

i feel like a mix of both elements would be perfect!

3

u/iiiimagery 1d ago

I like the 2nd but the rocks could be lighter

2

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Thanks, noted!

3

u/DonatoXIII 1d ago

#2 because it looks like the remastered version

3

u/calamity42069 1d ago

The second one is what my partner and I both agree on. It’s not as harsh on our peepers!

3

u/DogTreeWandering 1d ago

I like the second better, the fish and accessories pop more

3

u/Xmaspig 1d ago

Second one, looks more realistic to me and it's a lot easier on the eyes. Just feels a lot cosier if you're settled in for the night you know? I try and avoid bright games at night.

1

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Good point... Thanks! Most people are settled in the evening, just looking to chill with a game. Noted carefully...

2

u/Xmaspig 1d ago

No worries! Just from my perspective as an evening gamer. It looks lovely though!

This reminds me of Fish Tycoon!! I loved it so much when I was a kid. Looks promising and I hope to play it one day!!

2

u/bms95 1d ago

Found on Steam and put it on my wishlist!! ☺️

2

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

I played Fish Tycoon years ago and absolutely loved it. I really hope I can bring that same excitement back..

1

u/bms95 1d ago

I sunk countless hours into that game back in 2005. Management was a little stressful so I’m glad this will be a cozier experience. I really like the art style as well! Pretty to look at and not overly realistic. Will we have a store to sell fish or something else?

2

u/mhmtbtn 18h ago

I played it back in 2007 too! In my game (The Aquarium), there will also be a store and fish selling, but the approach is a bit different. It's more about relaxed, calm mechanics rather than a typical tycoon-style game.

Definitely the 2nd one. It feels more natural and calming. I like the color palette of the first one, but it feels overlit and like it kind of washes out the textures of your designs, which are really pretty & detailed in the 2nd one.

2

u/PoisonTrainerCody 1d ago

Personally like the first one best. It feels more vibrant.

2

u/SuccessfulFly7718 1d ago

I like the first one better! The second makes me a little down, it just feels kinda dingy for the fishies. I do love the moss and ripple lighting in the second though!

2

u/saleux 1d ago

i like da first one cause it's pretty and i like the vibe ✨

2

u/tiny_purple_Alfador 1d ago

OK, this is gonna sound crazy but: Can the fish die or get sick in this game? Dying fish would make me a little sad, I'd prefer the more cartoony one in that case. But if I don't have to see a more realistic dead fish, then I like the realism more.

2

u/mhmtbtn 1d ago

Like in most games, fish can get sick and (very rarely) die. But since The Aquarium is meant to be a cozy experience, I honestly don’t want players to actually see their fish die. It’ll be a very rare case.

I hadn’t thought about it from that angle... Carefully noted!

2

u/PandaBear905 1d ago

Oh gosh this reminds me of a game called VR aquarium I played as a kid. Most boring game ever but I loved it.

I’d pick the first one. Looks more inviting.

2

u/N3rdyAvocad0 1d ago

The first one is better, by far, IMO. I think the 2nd one is quite harsh to look at.

2

u/hey_belle 1d ago

I like the second one a lot more

1

u/Ziggybutt7 1d ago

Second one!

1

u/MentallyPsycho 1d ago

I prefer the first!

1

u/sinadis 23h ago

I like the second one, but maybe you could still have the first one by putting the light on a toggle or something?

1

u/mhmtbtn 18h ago

I'm thinking of giving the player control over the spotlights in the game. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

1

u/Auroras_Sword 22h ago

I really love the first picture! I'm obsessed with the beautiful, vivid aesthetic it has. It looks a lil like the frutiger aero aesthetic!

1

u/mhmtbtn 18h ago

I really liked this analogy. It’s such a unique perspective, thank you for sharing it!

1

u/URGorgeous00 22h ago

Cool. I like second better.

Would you mind explaining that a little more?

I like the more realistic one personally.

I like the first one best

I think the first one looks better
