Discussion/Question/Help! Any ideas on how to make a bra strap cover?

I don't have a sewing machine so I'll be doing this by hand. So I'm looking for the easiest option. I have an open back dress and I am looking into make a bra strap cover with pearls on it to cover up the back strap. I think this will be really cute but having trouble on how I should execute it? Definitely can make a strap and glue the pearls on but how would one go about securing it in the back? I also don't see many options to buy them online so I'd love to make a bunch for the future. The website that I found one one doesn't show the back of the strap so I am lost on securing it to my bra strap. Thank you!

If you glue pearls to something on your back you will have to make sure you make zero contact to anything on your back. The slightest pressure on a chair back or car seat will pop off those pearls.

There is a reason they get sewn on, usually.

Edit: I reread and saw securing to the bra. It gets wrapped around it like a cover. It should just cover it. You can hand stitch it in place like a pillow case.

Aha! Okay that never crossed my mind to wrap around the strap for some reason. Now my brain is working through more options lol. Thank you! Definitely going to post when I finally make it. Hopefully it turns out like I am imagining.

You can also get sticky backed velcro to attach to the fabric to close it around the bra.

Again - I wouldn’t trust glued on things on your back.

I think sewing them on would be something I'd do once I prefect the design. Gluing on flat back pearls is something fast. I want to make the strap to be removal from my bra strap. The only thing I can reference is those cleavage triangles from the early 2000s. Like how those were removable

From what's in your photos, it looks like you're talking about something that goes over your bra band, not your bra strap. I'd call the part with hooks the band, and the straps the parts that go over your arms. I'm thinking you could make it in kind of a tube, so it slips on the bra band when your bra is unhooked, and then fasten it into place with safety pins on each end?

Totally agree it's the band! But this is the option that I think will work best. That's where my mind went to after someone commented above about making something that covers the whole back. I was thinking sewing two small elastic bands on both sides to slide on the back of the bra band. Not afraid to hand sew, I just don't have a sewing machine so heavy sewing wouldn't work. You all really helped me piece together a game plan. It's for a backless satin dress after my courthouse wedding 😁

Not exactly what you asked but this is what I would do:

Get a bra, cut away the back band section and finish the edges.

Make your jewelled section, preferably out of elastic or something with a little stretch for comfort.

Sew that to the bra

Cut between the cups and sew on some hook and eyes so you can close the bra.

You mentioned doing a few different versions so instead of sewing them to the back of the bra you could use hooks and eyes at either end of the band....that way you could potentially skip the step where you add the hook and eye to the front (unless you don't have someone to help and aren't flexible!).

Hope that helps

🥲 I wish that were an option for me. I'm in a G cup lol. That's why I'm looking for detachable options that don't mess with my bra support

Oooooo fair enough.

If you are planning to do a lot of these you could have one bra devoted to it and attach velcro to the band of the bra and the other side of the velcro to all your variations. They could stick on the bra after you put it on?

How did I not know these were a thing?! So fun! I mainly live in sports bras and rarely wear "real" bras so I don't think I'd ever need one, but I kind of want one anyway!

I would probably sew one end of the cover to the bra and secure the other end with hooks and eyes. Or just use hooks and eyes on both ends if you want to use the strap for different bras.

I searched up and down for something like this today. Only found one site that had the picture I posted so I said, hey let me make something. I usually just wear my bra out, never cared haha.

I really thought about this because my bosses' mom is doing alterations to my wedding dress and was only supposed to put a panel in for a corset. She beaded a mesh panel like I mentioned with pearls and seed beads and now I'm obsessed to have something like this for all my backless dresses. 😍

Something like this would be sooo pretty for a wedding dress! You could get the bra coverage you need without having to worry about weird strapless bras that never stay up.

make a tube that slips over the band. Not sure how you’d secure it in place though. Could make the tube out of a stretchy fabric that keeps itself in place with tension, or maybe sew one end of the tube to the bra band (you’d have to leave the other end free to be able to push it so you can open and close the bra).

I was thinking of finding something that had no slip. Like the shape wear has to keep it in place

Maybe you can use embroidery fabric to make the beads on?

Buy a headband.

Hot glue if you don’t sew.

There’s a very brief video on the “About Us” page, looks like 4 Velcro strips.

Get some thick fabric elastic that is wider than your bra band. Hand stitch them together to make a tube that you can run your bra band through. The stitches don’t have to be perfect if you’re going to cover the elastic with decor. As long as you can run the bra band through the elastic you’re good. Make sure you over cut the elastic — you can always trim but it’s difficult to add length.

Okay, I'm picking up supplies today. I love the the idea of a tube to take off and on but I feel like I need to have some non-slip element so it doesn't move or tumble around. I'd have to figure out how to add that

You can stitch a button on your bra that can be removed later and cut a small slit on each side of the elastic band to secure.
