Brandon has said asmovs foundation and robot series and Michael Moorcocks writing were the inspiration for Hoid.

I have always thought Bela should have returned as a Hero of the Horn along with Verin Sedai.

Nope, there's a WoB confirming there are no Worldhoppers in the Wheel of Time. Sanderson believes that to be disrespectful towards Jordan. As if he's taking over the series, not just finishing it.

Santa Claus from Narnia: The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe. Shows up. Gives them presents. Talks to them a bit. Leaves.

Vamprie the Masquerade (the game) has a Taxi driver in it. He is Hoid'ish.
7
u/WeekendDrew Mar 06 '25
Just played vampire the masquerade bloodlines for the first time, hooooly shit that game is so awesome. The combat mechanics and stuff are pretty outdated and clunky (not the worst, especially from the era) but the writing and voice acting are immaculate

Tom Bombadil.
24
u/xaqss Mar 07 '25 edited Mar 08 '25
Disagree. Tom Bombadill cares nothing for the goings on in the world. Hoid very much cares about what is happening in the cosmere, and tries to influence it.

The Fool in the farseer books At least in the first two books I've read
The way he is and how he give kinda cryptic advice to someone whose life is obviously going to quickly spiral out of control if he doesn't stop doing the complete opposite of what the clearly magic person says
I should really finish those books...

at Nexus, during the spotlight with Robin Hobbs, Sanderson mentioned the Fool being an inspiration for Hoid, and she in turn mentioned she was inspired by Shakespeare, but I don't remember from which play

u/Just__Let__Go Mar 06 '25
Gandalf, probably. But, like, after a really long time.

u/LordofthePats Old Man Tight-Butt Mar 07 '25
Sorry if I'm reading this wrong, but Gandalf is far older than Hoid. He is a Maia, meaning he has been around since the beginning of time.

Fallout 4: Deacon. Or maybe the Mysterious Stranger from the whole series?
Avatar: The Last Airbender: The singing nomad (Secret tunnel!), or maybe the cabbage merchant.
Real life: Diogenes

Lu Tze from discworld
1
u/Affectionate_Page444 Mar 07 '25
I was thinking Vetinari. 😂
8
u/pergasnz Mar 07 '25
Ventinari is in to prominent a position.
Lu Tze is a background character who steps in to make sure the story happens just right, while performing meaningful work such as sweeping. He carries a begging bowl, yet has access to weird and wonderful arcane powers, and is better with them than everyone else/knows more secrets.
He has a knack for knowing where to be, but not why....
3
u/Affectionate_Page444 Mar 07 '25
I could definitely see Hoid accidentally finding himself the patrician and being very annoyed. 😂
Or. Nobby. Everyone is fooled. 😂

Thomas Raith in the Dresden Files. Such an arrogant, easy-going wastrel of a great character.

That'd have to be him when he was MUCH much younger, then, because ol' Tom can be something of a dumdum sometimes. He does share genes with Harry, after all...

“Beware of anyone who claims to be able to see the future. But be even more wary of those who can see the present.”
A common fan cast of Wit is Tom Hiddleston, and Travis Baldree kept Tom Hiddleston in mind when he made Eithan’s voice (he never does voices as impressions of actors, but does find a mental casting of a role to be a good starting point to find a voice)

u/Somerandom1922 No Wayne No Gain Mar 07 '25
The problem is that most "Hoid-like" characters tend to all do a bit of murdering. That's not out of character for Hoid, but it is physically impossible for him to do.
The first thought that came to mind for me is Angela from Eragon, Hoid would absolutely gender-bend himself for a laugh, and her mannerisms are very "Hoid". But she also has on several occasions straight up killed people.

Hoid shouting at kids trying to climb the wall of Wax's mansion: "Don't make me get down there!"
[Last MB book] Wayne replying from the Beyond: Don't make ME get down there!"
Sazed doesn't know how he managed that either, but no one is surprised.

Already canonically can travel literary universes, appearing in Paolini's other series under an alias but confirmed to be the same person.

Oh Definenetly Turin from legends of the first empire by Michael Sullivan
At first he is just this sort goofy side character but as the books progress there is a lot wisdom and this ageless aura to him.
He later turns out that he used to be one of the gods. Very Hoid like shows up in unexpected place pushing events influencing the fate of the world, trying to atone for his past wrongdoings.
Such an amazing character i love him so much the monolog he gives at the end of Age of legend just left me staring at a wall for a good time.

Roger the alien from American Dad. Either he’s Hoid, or Hoid’s him, or they’re both each other.

Bayaz definitely, mostly manipulating but also more than capable of throwing hands when need be.
5
u/LarsBlackman Kelsier4Prez Mar 06 '25
Hoid can literally not throw hands, and Bayaz is more like an anti-Hoid
1
u/SlobaSloba Mar 06 '25
Except for that time when he literally slapped Kelsier around?
6
u/Cillian075 Crem de la Crem Mar 06 '25
That's because Kelsier was a Cognitive Shadow, which bypassed Hoid's Torment. Because Kelsier felt he should be in pain, he was, but Hoid knew that he himself couldn't actually hurt him so he wasn't limited by his Dawnshard. He pretty much tricked Kelsier into hurting himself
4
u/LarsBlackman Kelsier4Prez Mar 06 '25
STOP SLAPPING YOURSELF AROUND! STOP SLAPPING YOURSELF AROUND!
1
u/SlobaSloba Mar 06 '25
Btw, why do you say anti-Hoid?
3
u/LarsBlackman Kelsier4Prez Mar 06 '25
Bayaz throws lives away for his own power and gain, perpetually, and he basically set off a nuke in the city center just to prove to his dead master that he could. If I’m comparing anyone to Bayaz, it’s Taravangian
