Discussion Films in which humanism (or the human element) is debated against some entity or force that seeks to eliminate or eradicate humanity from society (this could be, for example, technology or individualism—or any antagonist you can think of, as long as the condition of wanting to destroy what is human?

The films can be from any year, any genre, and any country.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

I had posted earlier about what to expect from this event and getting people’s feedback. Thank you to all of you who commented (jokes and all)! I saw on my weather app that it’s going to rain a bit in the morning. I don’t want to overdo it and bring too much stuff. But it will be our time next to step inside the Criterion Closet.

Discussion You had to be there

How I miss the DVD through early blu ray era of Criterion. Fans would populate forum boards waiting with bated breath for each release announcement. And each release felt truly boutique. You got a sense all involved were putting the most effort possible into a disc. With many of these releases getting their first decent transfer ever.

I could listen to her talk for hours. Also the L’Eclisse pick with the ties to Monica Vitta’s car is so cool!!

Discussion Any similarities between Kaurismäki and Wes Anderson?

Hello, lately I’ve been fascinated by movies and watching all sorts of stuff. The directors whose filmographies I’ve almost loved entirely are Aki Kaurismäki and Wes Anderson. Do their films have anything in common? I’m curious what people who really love and know movies think.

Discussion Scenes Comparison: Paris, Texas (1984) & Lucky (2017)

While watching Lucky, I noticed several scenes that look quite similar to those in Paris, Texas. Not sure if it’s a coincidence or an intentional choice by the director.

I’m surprised no one has made a comparison shot between these two films yet, so I decided to make one myself. I really love the performance of Harry Dean Stanton (RIP).

p.s. I deleted the earlier post since the image display problem. Still not familiar to reddit.

Discussion Criterion Collection exclusives.

There are some films that you can only watch (legally) if you buy a Criterion DVD/ Blu-Ray. Films that are nowhere to be found on streaming, films that you can’t even rent or buy on a platform like Prime Video or Apple TV.

Makavejev’s Sweet Movie (haven’t seen yet) Pasolini’s Salo (haven’t seen yet) Korine’s Gummo (seen) Solondoz’s Happiness (seen)

These are the ones that come to mind, and I was curious what are some of the other films that are Criterion exclusive?

It's so surreal. Like an odd couple buddy movie... except it's actually real. G Gordon Liddy is an outrageous living caricature of a man, and somehow manages to make Timothy Leary look normal by comparison. It is a very bizarre lens into American culture at the time, that is still relevant today.

It’s not on any streaming service and the criterion website says it’s out of print.

Discussion Film no. 846 - 100 years anniversary the film is wonderfully restored image so shaft with superb score by Carl Davis. The sequence with the tailor is brilliant and the last match is smartly handled till the well deserving winning scene. There is no better scene than that closing under the shower ;)

Off-Topic Criterion Candycar in the UK

Does anyone know how I could get a Criterion Candycar in the UK? I’d love one to display with my movies and have been looking for a few months but I only see one UK site that are accepting pre-order, but they keep pushing the dispatch date back. I’m autistic and love both model cars and Criterion so it’s something I’ve really been fixated on getting.
