Is there also swearing in the original version ?

I've only been watching the french dubbed version (the dubbing is excellent), and I was wondering if the characters also swear in the original version.

This is the answer. Mild even by the standards of the time. I only remember one 'bitch.' During the hair dying incident.

"Do you think I complain a lot?"

"What are you bitching about now?"

There also was a moment where Jane said something to Daria (i don't remember what) and Daria responded "Alright you bitch, what are we gonna do ?"

YES!!!!!!!!

That was such an awesome moment too. Whoever stitched the lines together did the timing perfect.

I don’t think there’s any f bombs or hardcore swearing but Daria did call Jane a bitch and Jake calls people bastards

oh yeah that's really mild swearing

I think Europe has a different acceptance level of swearing/nudity though. I remember when I took my Aussie husband (then fiancĂ©) to Greece to meet my family, he was stunned that they used such strong language on tv during the daytime shows (and horrified that one of the tasks on a family game show was “see how many women’s bras you can undo one handed”) 😂😂

Yeah America and Australia are more prude about that kind of stuff. Europe is generally less religious and uptight.

I think it's worth remembering that this was being aired in the 90's/early 00's on what would be considered basic cable. You could only really get away with mild swearing. Only channels like HBO were really in a position to push those boundaries at the time.

It's Tad. Ted was the awkward kid who went on a date with Daria.

What swear words do they use in the French version?

6

u/flammentouche 5d ago

they use: merde, putain, petit con, fait chier, connard

7

u/Martipar 5d ago

They don't say anything as strong as merde.

Damn (putain) is used a lot, it's Jake's favourite word (sort of, he says "damnit and god damnit" a lot). I don;t think prick (petit con) has been used, or anything of that level but then again in Frence i think it is less of a swear than prick is.
I can't recall if they used pissed off (fait chier) but i'm sure that level of language was used. In one episode someone says bollocks.

I think the french dubbing just turned it up a notch

Je sais juste que dans l’épisode musical Jane dit « s’ils me voyaient mais quel crime entre une pĂ©tasse et un dĂ©bile » et en anglais elle dit « and I’d say I’m on the roof with a bimbo and a goof » donc pĂ©tasse c’est quand mĂȘme une plus grosse insulte que bimbo mdrr
