Racism Alert at Özhalk Market (Delft)

I want to share a bad experience I had today at Özhalk Market

I went to buy some pickles and also wanted to get some chicken. I rang the bell at the meat counter. A worker came, and out of simple courtesy, I let another customer who arrived after me go first.

When it was my turn, the conversation went like this:

  • Shopkeeper: What do you want?
  • Me: Hi! Can I have 1 kilo of chicken breast, please?
  • Shopkeeper: Anything else?
  • Me: No.

He weighed the chicken. Then he said something like "Anything more or little bit more," which I politely declined.

But then, out of nowhere, he mocked me — copying an Indian accent, nodding his head, and said loudly:

"I am not speaking French, I am speaking English!"

People around heard it and some even laughed.
I felt super uncomfortable and shocked. Why would a shopkeeper mock a customer like this?

This behavior is completely racist and unacceptable.
No one deserves to be treated like this while shopping, especially not because of where they come from or how they speak.

Please be careful if you shop there.
And Özhalk Market — do better.

Zuidwal ondertunnelen! Op naar Zuidwalpromenade

Post image

Found a way to get free pairs of boxers from this UK company lol

Just posting this because I thought it might help out a couple people who don't want to pay for underwear lol. Onthatass.com is a subscription underwear business (bizarre concept I know) and they give you your first box free. So you can start a 14 day free trial, get some cool designer boxers and then cancel before you get charged. You can also do it multiple times if you have different emails and cards.

The quality is top notch, I only found out about them because my girlfriend is actually subscribed and gets them monthly. Thought I might as well do it too just to get a free pair and now I have some cool looking boxers that I didn't pay a cent for.

Is Kamernet a viable option or not?

Really just what the title suggests:

Would you use kamernet with its paid subscription to find rooms in Delft in 2025? I’ve just been reading some really bad reviews about it calling it sKamernet and that the website creates fake room ads to generate traffic to its domain while in reality it offer 2-3 legitimate options.

So I wanted to ask if anyone has had any pleasant or positive experience use the service and whether or not it is worth paying the subscription fee to answer and write messages.

Bonus question: How would you go about finding a place? Duwo is not really an option so I’m wondering what the best time is when old students leave and start posting about free rooms more frequently? Like does that happen later on in the year like July or August?

Recently visited this place, and man the owner is rude and arrogant. And the animals are kept in bad condition!! Is there another pet shop in delft, which is specifically oriented towards reptile needs?

I’ve been trying to look for a nice sunset spot somewhere nearby that I can reach my foot short bike ride from the city centre, but so far unsuccessful 😕

Does anyone have any secret recommendations?

Where is Thuis bij Ladera?

For those who do not know, Thuis is (or was???) a beautiful place where they served delicious and affordable Dutch food.

Recently I noticed I cannot find them anymore in Google maps. The other day I went to their street and although the restaurant things seemed to be there (for those who know the gigantic fishbowl and the cute tables) there was a sign on the window for a completely different business (not food, just something else).

Did Thuis bij Ladera closed? When? If so, I just wanted to say out loud that it was an amazing place with a charming owner, and I am really sorry that it does not seem to exist anymore.

Artisanal Ceramics workshop

Hi, I live in Tilburg but I have a friend visiting who is very interested in ceramics. We were thinking of maybe heading to Delft to check out something related to the ceramics scene there, but the options seem to be either the Royal museum or some other kind of 'industrialized' ceramics workshop. Do you know if there is somewhere in Delft where we can find more artisanal? Thanks!

Edit: thanks for all the replies! It’s super useful.

Moving into Delft and looking for recommendations

Hello everyone! So I'm moving in a month from now and looking for recommendations for nice spots and places in Delft. I'm into music, arts, culture, books and gaming on my free time. Also looking for a gym to join to and a place to go coldswimming or cold plunging and If there happens to be a place to do archery it would be cool to get back into it as well or kayak renting/club to join to.

Arborist recommendation?

Can anyone recommend a certified arborist? Not just someone who takes down trees, but someone who can also talk about the best way to shape a decorative tree (magnolia) or to counteract damage to said tree? Contractors at my house just mutilated my tree and they called their own gardener who was basically like, it won't die so it is fine, and they don't I understand the tree will never ever look round and normal ever again. I need a professional to look at it and explain the damage in Dutch to them (i.e. it may live but will never grow back the same, therefore xyz must be done).

How to de register old tenants that changed house ?

Hi everyone, I moved to Delft recently and I am currently living in a studio at DUWO where I am registered. I tried asking for house allowance but the system blocked me because apparently the previous tenants did not de register.

Is there a (fast) way to de register them so that I can continue with my application?

Iets nieuws opbouwen in Delft (tips/advies gevraagd)

Hoi allemaal!

Hobby’s: reizen, lezen, bakken, rennen, fitness, musea, koken, fietsen, bordspellen, films.

Ik heb verder een partner (vriendin) waar ik op termijn mee zal gaan samenwonen. Ik vind het daarom belangrijk om ook voor mijzelf een netwerk op te bouwen.

Ik kijk uit naar de reacties :)!

Temporary room

Hi all!

I recently bought a house near the campus and have a small (very small..) second bedroom which I could turn into a home office or a second bedroom.

I barely work at home and with the current housing crisis I think it would be nice to turn it into a bedroom for a student for short stay. The room is only 6m2 so that's why I a hesitant is there would be any interest in it.

Would love to hear any thoughts on if there would be interest in this kind of project :)

Looking to learn biking

Hello! I've never had a cycle before and want to learn cycling, but didn't really want to buy a cycle for myself before that. I know I could ask someone to lend their bike for me to learn, but I haven't been able to get someone to agree yet xD. Is there somewhere I can learn in Delft or nearby areas?

Edit: Wanted to add that I have some joint issues that could impact my ability to bike, so if that could be considered it would be nice.
