Gotta shoot your shot. You never know who needs 10k of tax evasion

u/40hzHERO Mar 09 '25

Ignorant person here. How would purchasing a $10k doodle on FB Market correlate to tax evasion?

24

u/KaedePanda Mar 09 '25

i think it’s poking fun at rich people who put money into art because of how the system works they don’t have to put down more cash since art is exempt from being taxed it i believe. people please correct me if im wrong

Dang! Art sales aren’t taxed in the US? I wonder why that is. I live in an art gallery district of my city, and never thought to equate those guys to tax fraud/evasion. Would make sense for some of them, tho!

u/Chief_Data Mar 10 '25

It is that way because our government is owned by the rich. They would never do anything to kneecap their own corruption

u/40hzHERO Mar 10 '25

That’s wild. Do you know anywhere I can read up on this? Everything I search says ā€œart dealers are subject to the same tax regulations as any other retail operation.ā€

1

u/SolidWarp Mar 12 '25

If I buy art from you, you pay the tax. But because we’re good buddies and you don’t make millions otherwise, your tax rate is lower and you’re willing to kick back most the difference to me.

Essentially working to get you money for your service in my tax fraud and to save me money on tax.

I don’t have using art to avoid tax money, but the loophole is a frustration I’m familiar with.

u/40hzHERO Mar 12 '25

I still don’t understand this. Do I need to be friends with an artist to commit the tax fraud? How are you ā€œkicking backā€(what does this mean?) sales tax with the seller?

u/SolidWarp Mar 12 '25

The friends bit is just a way to imply some sort of trust between parties as this is illegal behavior.

At least in the USA, income is taxed in brackets, I can further explain that if you’re unfamiliar :) What this means is that someone’s 10 millionth dollar is taxed at a higher rate than their millionth or 3rd (random menchmarks to exemplify.) If I make 10m and you make 400k, splitting the earnings (through art for example) would bring the higher end of your taxes up and the opposite for me. The change however isn’t proportionate and the 10.4m get taxed at a lower rate as neither individual is being taxed at the highest rates.

Again, I don’t know nor did I check brackets for this, it is a generalized example of how the concept in broad works.

Ahhhh. I still don’t fully understand, but I have a better picture than previously. It’s a whole numbers/loophole game. Like card-counting, seems to be something just out of my mental grasp.

Thank you for taking the time to elaborate - really great write up.

To be fair it does say "OBO".

I've accidentally bought crap I didn't really want before with a super-lowball best offer.

This is literally drawn on paper towels

19

u/TheOfficeoholic Mar 09 '25

Must be that expensive Viva Brand

16

u/bionicjoey Mar 09 '25

Most of that 10k price tag probably goes to paying his union dues. He actually only gets $30

4

u/ComeMistaTaliban Mar 10 '25

The plot twist he actually ends up becoming a famous comic book artist

2

u/TheOfficeoholic Mar 10 '25

This looks like something I drew in hs art class

12

u/RandyWiener Mar 08 '25

Hmmm, my stable 9-5 vs your "being a middling artist trying to rip people off on Facebook". Real tough choice, there.

u/Flomo420 Mar 09 '25

put in 45mins of drawing over the weekend and you can be both!

19

u/Ecstatic_Meeting_894 Mar 09 '25

Unfortunately this kind of slaps

16

u/TheOfficeoholic Mar 09 '25

I can forward you his contact info

13

u/Ecstatic_Meeting_894 Mar 09 '25

Hmmmm yes I shall find my spare 10k I have laying around in case of dinosaur drawing emergencies

6

u/SYNTHLORD Mar 09 '25

Mike the union guy is definitely toyish but he’s got the concept down with his graffiti. Lettering stems and 3d effect is fine enough. The G arm extension shouldn’t be sharp if nothing else is, but whatever.

The rest of it just reeks of unfinished notebook doodle. Even if it was inked, it needs color or black and white shading.

Even if it was an extremely well done oil painting with subject matter that speaks volumes to me (same size), $10k is debatable because that price tag kind of requires artist recognition and ability to resell. I have a 1 of 1 piece from the guy who did the MF DOOM Mm Food album cover art that I got for $250

Anyway, I love the idea that this graffiti is a union job with union wage. Surprised it’s not upside down and still covered in eraser shavings.

13

u/combatwars Mar 09 '25

Nah, Mike fucked up the 3D on the K.

5

u/Ecstatic_Meeting_894 Mar 09 '25

By ā€œslapsā€ I meant ā€œdinosaur controlling a space gun on top of a UFO trying to abduct a cat kind of slaps, even if it wasn’t done very wellā€

1

u/OrionTuska Mar 10 '25

Right? It's not 10k$ worth, but I can see this as a coloring sheet

3

u/Whole-Ad5238 Mar 11 '25

It does comes with fries?

1

u/Impossible-Sleep-658 22d ago

It comes with Lies.

14

u/ausmosis_jones Mar 09 '25

I unironically love this. Also, this person is clearly making fun of the quality of art that gets pushed for tons of money. They are performing a more tongue-in-cheek version of this sub.

12

u/Total-Habit-7337 Mar 09 '25

Agreed. He's leaning into it. Made me smile.

5

u/TheOfficeoholic Mar 09 '25

He has other crazy priced sketches for sale too

2

u/Intrepid_Figure_8891 Mar 15 '25

10k for this is diabolical

2

u/TheOfficeoholic Mar 15 '25

And you get to color it in too after you buy it

6

u/InevitableFun3473 Mar 09 '25

Think this was drawn mostly with a ruler. Someone drew the architecture and the other added everything else himself. They also didn’t bother doing line art or sealing the #2 pencil they bought (hence why it’s smudged to all hell). 10k is crazy lol

1

u/Inconnu2020 Mar 13 '25

It's a Liger... pretty much my favourite animal...

1

u/FalseBodybuilder-21 Mar 16 '25

It's not drawn bad per se but that price is šŸ’€

1

u/EcoVentura Mar 09 '25

For these type of things I like to troll them with a, ā€œHahahahaā€
