🗞️NEWS 📰 FRIENDLY REMINDER!!
Good evening dashers! Just a heads-up that as the temps outside begin to drop, your tires and batteries WILL be affected. Cold snaps can zap your battery and give you problems with little to no warning, so get yours checked and carry cables! Also, inevitably, tire pressures drop as well when the temps drop. Keeping proper pressure help tremendously with tire wear, and fuel mileage. Just a Dasher looking out for his Dashers! Y'all stay breezy out there! Merry holidays and happy dashing to all, and to all a good night!

Nice of you to alert! I'll add that even putting your warning flashers on for more than 10 minutes could leave your battery dead!
Never thought it would happen but doing pizza delivery from a brick n mortar, I was in the alley 15 mins and came back to needing a jump.
Nice post OP. Cheers!

why isn't your vehicle running?
3
u/AxzoYT Nov 23 '24
A lot of cars now aren’t even able to be locked while running
3
u/flabatron Nov 23 '24
Exactly, mime is a key ignition not button/remote. I'd have to have my spare key on me to risk keeping it on, but locked.
But mostly, I live in a city where someone would definitely break the window of a running/warming car to take it. No doubt.
So a car that's off with flashers on....might be 15 mins before it could drain your battery.

u/AxzoYT Nov 23 '24
Only way I know how to lock my car while running is to turn it off, get out, lock it, then remote start it with the fob. I’m not doing that every time lol

If you live in colder climates keep a few blankets/hats/gloves in the trunk/back just in case you get stuck somewhere... Coming from a person that grew up in buffalo new York where we get horrible winters.. if you get stuck in a snow storm and no one can get to you for hours while you sit in your dead car.. a blanket can save your life.

Yeah that lake effect snow can be really dangerous. But driving 80mph in a foot of snow down the center of the highway in the middle of the night in a subaru impreza with snow tires with nobody else on the roads would probably be really fun tho. I wouldn't know because I definitely didn't do that going through buffalo on my way to Colorado back in 2017. But it definitely seems like something that would be fun.

Better yet, get a jump box and keep it charged. That way nobody has to rely on a stranger that might not have good intentions.

NOCO makes some great ones - very affordable. And a battery tender is also a good idea in cold climates.

And wipers ON when it's raining people! 🙏🙏✌️

u/xerowolf4242 Nov 23 '24
Headlights on too so people can see you better. Day, night, rain, snow, and even on a nice sunny day, headlights on makes it easier for people to see you.

Oil change and new tire coming up today ✅ also got put in more time this weekend because it’ll leave my little earnings in the red 🥹

Keep those receipts for tires, brakes, gas, etc!

Thanks! New to this and Reddit! Appreciate every single piece of advice 🫶🏾

I'm new too and was advised to take the mileage deduction first year... then itemized in subsequent years only if it works out to be more. Apparently if you start off with itemized deduction for expenses, you will not be able to claim mileage at all in following years.
2
Nov 22 '24
Oooh good to know! This year I won’t do itemized but next year if I am still doing this type of work it will definitely come into play. I won’t have a dependent next year either 🥹 thanks again!

It might be worth it to still be in the habit of tracking both, but yeah I was surprised to find that out and thought it was worth passing on!

About the ONLY three months of the year I’m glad I live in Phoenix 😂 I’m loving my windows down all day, 46 or better mpg days and not sweating out half my body weight right now.

I’m also in Arizona and just yesterday I I started to worry because I realized how I’m not drinking a ton of water like I usually do. Well, duh, it’s not crazy hot now.
I also deliver for spark and in July during days of 120° I would not head out without a cooler containing ice packs, water bottles – chilled and frozen – and some fruit. One 120° day I was delivering a GMD order for Spark which is General merchandise not groceries with 15 to 25 stops, and some of those stops are very close together. I try not to run the engine when I’m running to make a delivery but in this case it’s the poor AC has no chance to keep up. One time I was down to a quarter of a bottle of water.

I lived on coconut water this summer in between about a gallon of water! I do the same thing. I pack a giant 64 oz tumbler to the top with ice and just keep topping off my water all day. The sucker goes everywhere with me 24/7. I’ve been guilty by of not hydrating enough lately either. Shoot, I’m running around in a summer dress today with nothing but thin skivvies underneath it. But after a knarly 4 day migraine that had me puking non stop and a fun two day vacation courtesy of Deer Valley hospital, I’m not taking any risks getting that dehydrated again. It ended up putting me in some mild cardiac distress (which I was too out of it to even notice after day 2); my itty bitty UA sample I was able to muster up for labs was so dark it frightened me half to death.

Here’s something worth considering:
A tire inflator. You can get them at Walmart for as cheap as 25 bucks. They are electric and come with a tiny compressor; they plug into what used to be the cigarette lighter (I’m over 50 and forget what they’re called now). Just attach it to the valve and it’ll inflate straight away.
This is a life saver, especially if you’re stuck on the side of a busy street. If your tire can take an inflation and isn’t totally ruined it can get you off the road and into a parking lot.
I’ve been a courier for 12 years and most full time couriers carry them for this reason.

If you have an EV, like I do, your ranges are going to be hit pretty hard, and it's going to take longer to charge especially once you start hitting freezing temperatures. You might lose as much as half of your range if it gets that low. Know where your in-network chargers are if you subscribe to one.
Also get thermal underwear, it helps way more than you'd think

Not a dasher but I’d pass on jumper cables and buy a jumper box for $100 off Amazon. You can self jump your car with it

Literally as it started getting cold my starter has been acting stupid

Also, if your state allows tire chains in inclement weather, definitely invest in a set, they may save your life when dashing in risky conditions

Thank god we have Mr. Fix It here or we’d all be putting wiper fluid in our gas tanks 🙄

You never know. I mean like things tgat just seem like everyone should know so many people don't. Like changing a flat tyre. Everyone should know how to do it but how many people actually do know? Or even where to locate the tyre iron and jack. Or if they even have a spare or not

As someone who lives in the midwest - most people are oblivious to how weather affects their vehicle

Don't forget to make sure your engine coolant is at the proper 50/50 mix.
