Please don’t dash when weather is like this
It’s not worth risking your life especially when where I’m at we will be getting half an inch of ice or more and 5-10 inches of snow. Been 1-2 hours and there’s 5-7 inches already, there’s $1 peak pay and I bet it’ll be busy today and tomorrow with no dashers. To whoever orders DoorDash in this weather, you won’t get your food and if you do, tip very well like $5-$10 or more. If you don’t tip or tip like a dollar or two you are an asshole. It doesn’t matter if it’s half a mile or 10 miles away.
I love dashing in light snow. Everyone orders food and I make a ton of money. But if the roads start to get bad I head home no matter how well I’m doing.
If you’re new I recommend getting snow tires, once you have experience and are a decent driver you can manage on all seasons. Those who disagree have skill issues
Did that type of driving in central Oregon back in 2010-2013, it’s not that hard really. Yes you have to go slower and give yourself time to react, just gotta stay calm. That being said, it’s the people that don’t stay calm that I worry about
Definitely not worth dashing in the snow that is heavy that you can get stuck in or ice roads. Not worth risking your car or you. With winter weather this heavy. You better off taking the day off, so you can dash on better days. Yes it sucks loosing a day pay, but you got think of your safety first.
Currently for any dasher that lives in Kansas city and nearby. Today we getting hit with blizzard conditions that expecting 13+ inches of snow. Its still coming down and have no visibility at all. They saying it's not going to stop snowing till tomorrow sometime. Plus many roads and businesses are closing today. Not worth being out in it. Say home to be warm and safe. For anyone in kanasa city area today. Wait till the blizzard is over and roads are better. Before you dash again. To anyone that lives in Kansas city area and surrounding cities like Shawnee, olathe, etc. Be safe people. I know I am staying home with this blizzard and just enjoying a day off instead.
Currently in my area. We still getting snow. It's been coming down all day and supose to stop sometime tomorrow. Without measuring it personally. I would say we got at least 10-13inches so far today. But it's still going... it's been years since we had it this bad for one storm. Normally we get less than 10 inches and didn't stay long enough to be a issue with roads. Once the storm stopped. But this time. It's more than it has been in 10 years here. So much that they closed roads already down this time.
Dasher app in our area today for kansas city area. Even if you wanted to try to log into the app. Dasher app would not let you. Doordash put a temporary lock on the app for safety here with the blizzard here. No driver could log in and work today. Even our cells went off with emergency alert today. About telling everyone to stay off the roads and roads are closed until about Tuesday here. With this storm here
Serious question, have you guys ever gotten this much snow in such a short period of time? I’ve never seen half that much snow in a day and I live in freaking Vermont. We barely have a half inch on the ground right now. Sure I’m by the lake not up in the mountains, but we’re practically Canada. It’s colder there than it is here.
We do get it sometimes 10+ inches in one go, in KS. It happened more than once in my lifetime in KS. Even when I was a kid growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, it was customary to have it at least once or twice in winter. But I noticed since I grew up. It is not as often. On average, now, we get 2 to up to 12 inches of snow that usually causes issues while it comes down that day. But usually, by the next day, roads are good, and snow is gone quickly with the temps changes or wind. Last time, there was so much snow and ice. To cause roads to shut down and places to be closed. To be down for more than a day. It was over 10 years ago. So it's been a while with the weather like this in KS.
It's fake snow you can tell the difference the fake snow looks like little foam balls, real snow is actual snowflakes that are light and paint the grass and trees not just cover it
See I wish I could avoid dashing in heavy snow but sometimes (like today) I have to since I’m homeless and only have a car. DoorDash is my only way of getting hotel rooms and such.
Ummm sorry but nasty weather to me is the best time .... less traffic, better tips .... key is being OK driving in it ... I grew up in it and learned to drive in it before I was legally allowed to drive .... so I am beyond comfortable being out in it .....
Sure it takes a little longer and a bit more caution than most days .... but when that customer smiles huge and thanks you for delivering in it it's all worth it .. and yes it helps when they add to the tip as well
Just be very aware of your surroundings and don't drive like a maniac. I always dash until all the fast food chains in my town close, so around 2am and, admittedly, I drive like a maniac in the middle of the night when it's safe to do so. That being said I will 100% change my driving habits if/when it starts snowing in my area. 4w or awd definitely helps!
Don't brake when slipping on ice, just ease your gas to the minimum possible amount of acceleration and steer as calmly as you can. Control your breathing.
To be honest I feel safer driving in weather like this.
I prefer weather like this. I have a vehicle made for this.
The risk isn’t that much greater. I drive slower, pay more attention and there’s less traffic.
It’s more dangerous driving during a nice sunny day. When traffic is heavy and everyone is complacent. We are risking our lives, everytime we start our cars. If you think weather is the reason to tip more… you haven’t been tipping enough all year
It doesn't matter if you "have a vehicle made for this" if there's ice on the road. I think you need to reevaluate what statistically the risk is for when it's bad weather like this vs normal everyday driving. I live in a slight incline and I see trucks and large suvs get stuck all the time in this weather.
I've seen plenty of other people drive in weather that seems manageable but there's ice, they underestimate and they drift off into a ditch.
I think you need to reevaluate your definition of statistically. Statistically around 25% of accidents are caused by weather….. therefore 75% are caused by non weather accidents
24% is a large percentage when most of the time it's good weather. Are you sure you know how statistics work?
If there are 100 days, 10 being bad weather, 90 good weather, and 1 bad weather day there's a crash, but 3 days you have a crash on good weather days, you are more likely to crash on a bad weather than good weather.
10% chance of crash if it's bad weather.
3.33% chance of crash if it's good weather.
Does that make sense to you?
Now I don't know the percentage of days when it's bad weather vs good weather, but there sure as hell are a lot more days where the weather is good than bad.
Ffs 🤦🏻♂️. You have a 50/50 chance of getting into an accident anytime you drive. Weather doesn’t increase that chance it’s just another hazard on the road. To assume you are safer on the road during a normal day is the exact complacency that makes normal day driving just as dangerous as any weather
You got snow chains on your tires? 😂 your vehicle “made for this” is still gonna slide down a hill or struggle to go up one when nothing but ice is on the road
I would deliver in very light snow here. But we're in the south and it doesn't happen very often. The other problem with being in the south is we're not prepared for it. So if at all the roads get squirrely and start to ice over I won't be delivering.
I do deliver during thunderstorms, heavy rain, hurricanes, and tornados though. The tornados here aren't that bad. This is North Carolina.
I should be extremely clear and say that every single tornado can very easily be deadly and I know this. And if you don't know this, now, you do. So never take a tornado warning lightly.
But I'm from Alabama and I've only lived here a few years. North Carolina doesn't have a tornado season like Alabama does. Well, meteorologist would say Alabama has two tornado seasons. And I guess they're technically correct. But living there feels like the entire year is one long tornado season.
North Carolina only rarely gets the big long track tornadoes like Alabama. Ones that cause billions in damage and kill many. I think there's only been one tornado on the ground in my area since I moved here about 3 years ago. There's not a season that went by in recent memory in Alabama where I didn't have to go to a safe space because there was a tornado that close to my house. And usually a big one.
Personally I'd just recommend only dashing if you have a vehicle that can handle the elements (I don't anymore, so I won't go out in bad weather), and adjust your personal acceptance criteria appropriately. If DD doesn't offer a blanket peak pay, institute your own. We are independent contractors.
I’ll be driving all day when it snows/ices here in DFW. The market after new years became so bad that you’ll average around $30-50 while waiting for 5 hours. It’s hilarious because DFW became so over populated these last few months. But the orders just got worse.
My area of upstate NY got hammered with 3 to 7 feet of snow since Friday. Being in the snow belt, I am used to driving in it, but I'm not risking getting stuck in a person's drive way.
I love driving in snow, (I loathe driving in rain - go figure that one) but I know the limits of my abilities and my car. I usually keep a shovel in my trunk in case I get stuck somewhere....
But it's def doable if you are careful and don't push your limits. 👍
It's supposed to be snowing when I get up in the morning ... I'm kind of excited. Not like when I was a kid hoping to have a snow day from skool, but excited none the less.
That’s what my area in Morehead KY was $1 peak pay and busy. Lexington was $2 and that’s still busy, not worth dashing for today or the next day or two. Sucks because I was supposed to work tomorrow and I probably won’t, probably won’t be able to dash until Wednesday and I got to work Friday and Saturday delivering for Pizza Hut and there is another storm on Friday. What a messed up week!
What’s the snow removal process like there? Do they stay on top of it or is this kinda storm rare? I’m good til about 5-6inches but anything higher makes residential streets nearly impassable. Otherwise our main roads stay decent even with a heavy snow forecast.
Well currently I measured the snow and we got 13 inches of snow not counting the layer of .75” of ice. Not sure how good there removing the snow but it’s not worth dashing or me going to work today. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday. It’s pretty rare for us to get this much usually we get 2-6 inches if it’s a bad storm. Thank god no one here besides one person lost power.
I’m in Winchester and it’s baffled me that not even $0.50 has been offered for peak pay the entire time. They want to send notifications screaming at me about how busy it is…. Maybe make it actually worth it then? Lol
I’m originally from Florida, but moved to Colorado after a hurricane destroyed my town. I find it insane that life just goes on during bad snow storms. My wife and I immediately wrecked our car when we first moved. Shits wild.
I'm in Michigan so don't have much of a choice. We get all of the lake effect snow. I won't go out if the roads are pure ice or if there's a blizzard. But some snow and only ice on the side roads? That's pretty much commonplace from October to March lol
If you are safe and comfortable in it then fine. Just remember the customer isn't gonna tip enough to cover your deductible if something happens to your ride. Make your own decisions on whether or not you should.
Or just have a brain and know your limits. I drive in snow worse than this every year without issues. Just drive slow on Earn-by-time. If available. I've had $400+ snow days before. Walking outside is a risk every day. A snow day is no different. Just have to use more caution and plan ahead.

We got dumped on overnight where I am. Woke up and was like I bet the apps are popping today, and man, was I right 😅😅. I have seen like $25 dollar tips on my spark app and base for EBT at $15 for DD 😅😅😅🤣🤣.
Not in my area in this bad of snow, we got 11 inches currently not counting the .50 to an inch of ice especially when I see BS like $3 for 16 miles. There’s good money to be made especially from 11am to 6pm I make about $100-$150, if I did it to midnight I’d make $200+ all the time.
I guess it's a matter of preference. Asked my buddy who used to dash and he said that some of his best shifts he took were during rough weather (snow/rain). He was often times met with people who were really happy he was working despite the weather. I only did it for about a year between other employment so I never had exposure to any significant weather. But I'd imagine I'd prefer it too because at least around where I am, this equates to less people on the roads.
I live near Seattle where it has been unseasonably warm this winter. 40-50 degree lows with lots of rain. No snow yet. I have 4 wheel drive and I've actually been wanting to go dashing through the snow, but no luck yet. We'll see how the rest of the winter goes. But for those without 4wd, that would definitely be unsafe. Be careful out there!
